Ive compiled all of the tricks and methods I have used over the years into

a repairman. Often they will tweak your computers actual settings

5 Simple Steps to a
Faster Computer
This eBook will not cover every single aspect of your computer, as there
are tons of free websites available that provide this information. This
eBook was designed to explain only the details needed for you to properly
set up your computer, and give you simple methods to cleaning and
maintaining your personal computer.
The following steps are the same steps I use when I work on a computer.
Following them properly will provide you with the best results possible.
Please note that these 5 steps are designed to improve the performance
of your computer so we can actually work on it. Failing to do these steps
first will make the later methods harder to do as your computer wont be
running as fast as it can be. These steps simply clean up your computer
so it can work faster and will not harm, destroy, delete, or remove
any of your personal files.

5 pieces of software every computer needs:

1. PC Updater Keeps your computer drivers up to date.
2. Ccleaner Cleans up junk off your computer.
3. Spyware Doctor Kills any and all spyware for you.

Step 1
A good cleaning is the very first thing we need to do to the computer.
Without a proper cleaning, the computer will not function properly, period.
Most of the time this step alone can restore your computers speed, so to
do that we need a good cleaner. Ccleaner is a freeware application
capable of removing the Dirt and grime left on your computer from
frequent use.

First, download Ccleaner from here. Its easy to use, and has a lot of
features for cleaning your computer. To get started simply click the Scan
My Computer button near the top of Ccleaners main window. This will
perform a system scan and provide a list of details to the items that need
to be cleaned. Simply click the Clean My Computer button to clean the
files. Its that simple!
You should also download PC Updater and make sure that your drivers are
all up to date. Out of date drivers can cause your computer to act strange
and be slow and sluggish.

Step 2
After a good cleaning I tend to remove some of the added bells and
whistles by disabling the visual effects provided by Microsoft. These
effects are cute, but they eat up valuable resources needed for a faster
computer. There is also another default feature provided by Microsoft
that we can disable called the indexing service.
Disabling Unneeded Visual Effects:
(Removes the visual effects, and increases computer performance)
1. Click your "Start" button to access the start menu
2. Then click right click on "My Computer"
3. Select Properties"
4. Select the "Advanced" tab
5. Then under the "Performance" tab select "Settings"
6. Click "Adjust for best performance"
7. Save these settings by clicking OK
Disabling the Indexing Service:
(Unnecessary default service)
1. Click your "Start" button to access the start menu
2. Click My Computer
3. Under Hard Disk Drives right click on your Hard Disk
4. Click Properties
5. Uncheck Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file
searching
6. Click Apply
7. Select Apply changes to C:\ Subfolder and files and click OK
8. If anything pops up on the screen simply click Ignore

Step 3
Sometimes viruses or malware can corrupt your operating system, so lets
verify that Windows has not been corrupted.
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type in CMD then press Enter on your keyboard.

4. This should open a black screened window like this.

5. Type SFC /SCANNOW then press Enter.

6. It may say something like Files that are required for Windows to run
properly must be copied to the DLL Cache, so insert your Windows CD
to continue.

Step 4
Now that we have those two features disabled, lets move on to cleaning
up some space used by useless software on our computer. Often, over
time, we can install a bunch of junk we dont really need installed.

These programs will add up over time and completely use up space
needed to keeping your computer running its best.
1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Add or Remove Programs
4. Once the Add or Remove Programs window opens, remove anything
in the list you dont use or need.
5. If you dont know what a particular program is, Google it and make
sure before you remove it.

Step 5
Finally, lets make sure Windows is actually running its best using the
most up-to-date version. Updating Windows regularly can keep it running
its best, and most of the time its essential to your computers health, as

these updates prevent harmful attacks against it. Windows Update is
available online at www.windowsupdate.com, or directly on your
computer following these steps.
1. Click "Start"
2. Click "All Programs"
3. Look all the way on top and you'll find a "Windows Update"
button, then click it.
4. Your web browser should take you directly to Microsoft's
Update site.
5. Once you get there you are offered two selections, "Express"
and "Custom" Select "CUSTOM".
6. Then click on ALL the available updates for your computer and
select "Install Updates"
Thats it. Doing this often will keep your computer up-to-date,
and safe from most threats.
By now you should see an improvement in your computers
responsiveness and speed. Following these five(5) steps on a regular
basis can keep your computer running fast and smooth for years to come!
You should also consider cleaning and optimizing your pc with a qualified
product. There are many out there but I will just show you the 3 I like
the most.

registry cleaners on the market. The new version that just came out in
june of 2009 is the best version ever and has hundreds of common
computer fixes built right in.

Defending Yourself
and Your Computer
Viruses - Now that your computer has been cleaned up properly, lets
move on to building up its defense against predators and other malicious
things. To properly protect yourself from these threats you need a really
good anti-virus program for starters. Often the freebie scanners are
difficult to use, and Ive personally never had good luck using them.
Nowadays, I like to use Kaspersky Antivirus . Having Kaspersky
installed will save you a ton of headaches, trust me, without it you might
get hit so bad youll lose everything you had on your computer.
1. Spyware and Malware Having a virus scanner is not enough these
days. Spyware these days are capable of stealing personal information
about you in a matter of minutes. Often people install Spyware
unknowingly when they install certain freeware programs off the
Internet. Often they dont read the User Agreement License which
usually contains a small mention of the Spyware and its intent.
Malware on the other hand, is used to corrupt and destroy your
computers software. Often leaving your computer in a total disaster.
Some can even damage it so bad that you end up having to reinstall
the Windows operating system. There are several programs designed
to remove these threats.
The best defense against spyware and malware is to use pc tools
spyware doctor. Download Spyware Doctor now
2. Firewall Defense Having a firewall installed and properly running
can block 99% of all attacks on your computer while connected to the
Internet. BitDefender comes with a built in firewall, but there are
other firewall software available as well. Zone Alarm also sells a
firewall application I think is a good choice as its simple to use, and
packed full of features for advanced users to use to protect their
system. Regardless of which one you get, both provide excellent
protection from threats from the Internet.

Tweaking Windows
for Maximum Effects
Now that your computer is running better, its time to learn a few things
about how to make it faster by tweaking certain aspects of your
computer. Windows, and any program currently running on your
computer, need to have plenty of memory available to function properly.
Your computers memory is called RAM (Random Access Memory). The
more RAM you have the more you can do with your computer. Heres a
method for checking how much memory your computer has in it.

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Find and Click System
Under the General tab look down and you should see how much
memory your computer has in it as well as the processor it uses.

I personally recommend at least 1 gigabyte of RAM. Anything less than

that and your computer wont be very fast. Often adding an additional
stick of RAM will be enough to give a noticeable different in speed. If you
need more RAM be sure to check out Crucial Technology. This place
has just about everything you need to turbo charge your computer for
maximum speed and performance.
Scan your system to see what kind of memory you need

Folder Settings Tweaks

For better performance we can tweak our folder options by following
these steps.
1. Open "My Computer"
2. Click "Tools" and select "Folder Options"

3. Select the View tab

printers"
6. CHECK "Launch folder windows in a separate process"
7. CHECK "Do not cache thumbnails"

Disable Those Annoying Sounds

Almost every function of Windows has a sound attached to it. These
sounds are all loaded when your computer starts, so removing them will
speed up your start up and shutdowns tremendously.
1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Sound and Audio Devices
4. Click the Sounds tab
5. Under Sound Scheme Select "No Sounds"

Deleting unneeded Stuff

After a fresh install of Windows there are usually files and folders that can
be safely removed which can improve your computers performance a lot.
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type in each of the following lines then press enter.
4. If you dont have one of the following folders, simply ignore it and
move
on to the next one.
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
C:\windows\system32\dllcache\
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name_here\Local
Settings\History
C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages
C:\WINDOWS\Temp

Using a Bigger Page File

If you have more than one hard drive or partition then this tweak
is for you. If not ignore this and continue!
Windows using a page file system for additional processing space. By
Default Windows uses a single page file located on the same hard drive
Windows is installed. If you have another hard drive or separate partition
you can add an additional page file increasing the space available for
Windows to use.
1. Click Start
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Select the "Advanced" Tab
6. Under Performance click "Settings"
7. Select the "Advanced" tab
8. Under "Virtual memory", click "Change"
From here we can add the additional page file to the other available drive
or partition. I usually set this additional page file to the same size as the
original one. You can add a page file to each partition or other hard drive
you have installed on your computer for added space.

Starting an Application Using the Prefetch Feature.

To speed up the loading times for most programs you can use a Windows
option called, Prefetch.
1. Right-Click on the programs icon.
2. Click "Properties"
3. Inside the "Target" press the space bar and type in /prefetch:1

Removing
Unnecessary
Windows Services
Services are programs that Windows has running in the background that
keep Windows running smoothly. Unfortunately, there are quite a few of
those services that arent needed. They also eat up your processing

capability so shutting these services down can improve your computers
performance as well.

1. Click Start
2. Click "Run"
3. Type in: Services.msc.
4. To edit a service simply right-click it
5. Click Properties
6. Edit the startup type.

Disk Defragmenter and Cache Options

Over time files are slowly fragmented across your hard drive. This
fragmentation can slow your computer down to a crawl after so long.
Windows comes with Disk Defragmenter which can be used to Defrag
your computer. Unfortunately, it cant access files that are in use, so
these files are often left unaffected and continue to cause problems.

available to do this for you. Most of these applications can restore your
computers performance tremendously with frequent use.

Speeding Up Your
Windows Start Up!
One of the most annoying things a computer user can experience is the
pain one must endure when waiting for Windows to start on a slow
machine. You can fix this issue though using a built-in feature of
Windows called, MSConfig. MSConfig gives you direct access to the
services and programs that start up with Windows. Removing these
services and programs can increase your start up speeds exponentially.
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type msconfig in the box provided and hit Enter
4. This will open the MSConfig window. Notice the tabs at the top of its
window. Click the Services tab.

5. Down at the bottom make sure the Hide All Microsoft Services is
checked. Uncheck any items left in the main window that you dont
need or know about.
6. Click the Startup tab
7. Do the same for this tab as well, removing anything you personally
dont know what it is, or what you dont need at startup.

Weekly Check Ups

Just like regular check ups with your doctor, your computer needs your
attention once a week or it too will get sick and need help. Dont neglect
your computer by following these simple steps.
1. Run Ccleaner daily.
2. Run PC Registry Cleaner once a day.
3. Run Disk Defragmenter once a week.
4. Update Windows regularly.
