Data Editor: data view

A spreadsheet system for defining,


entering, editing and displaying data
Rows are cases
Columns are variables
Cells contain values
The data file is rectangular

Rows are variables


Columns are variable
attributes

Variable view

Input - The variable will be


used as an input (e.g.,
predictor, independent
variable).
Target - The variable will
be used as an output or
target (e.g., dependent
variable).
Both - The variable will be
used as both input and
output.
None - The variable has no
role assignment

This panel contains:


Statistical tables,
charts and output

Pivot Table Editor

We can edit text, rearrange rows,


columns and layers, add colour,
create multidimensional tables,
and selectively hide and display
result

full-colour, bar charts,
Histograms, scatter plots,
3-D graphics and more

Syntax Editor

This window contains the command syntax


That reflects the choices you have made
selection in menu options. This commands
can then be edited (include special features
not available through the pull-down menus
and dialogue boxes-can be save in a file
for further use).

Menus: File

The Files menu allows you to


create, new files, open existing
files, read in files from other
software programs, save files
and print

Menus: Edit

This menu allows you to modify


or copy text from the output or
syntax windows, and to search
for and replace text or data.

Menus: View

This menu allows you to make the


status bar and toolbar active,
and to change particular
characteristic of the window.

Menus: Transform

To change certain variables in


the data file using commands
such as Recode and Rank
Cases, and create new
variables using the Compute
Command.

Menus: Data

The menu allows you to define


variables and create variable
template. We can also merging
files, inserting, sorting, and
transporting variables and
cases, selecting and
weighting cases.

Menus: Analyze

This menu allows you to select the


analysis you require. A variety
of statistical procedures are
available, ranging from
summarising data through to more
complex designs.

Menus: Graphs

This menu allows you to create


bar, line, area and pie charts,
histograms and scatter plots

Menus: Utilities

To display file and variable


information, it allows you to
define and use different
variable sets.

Menus: Window
This menu allows you to
arrange, select and control the
attributes of the various
Windows. You can move
efficiently among the data,
syntax, output and chart
windows

Menus: Help

This menu allows you to


access information on how
to use the many features of
SPSS
