Mr. James O'Neill

Commissioner
New York City Police Department
1 Police Plaza
New York, NY, 10038
Dear Commissioner ONeill:
We write regarding the urgent need for crossing guards in the 94th Precinct. After hearing
from many of our constituents, we requested additional crossing guards. The local
precinct informed us they do not have the personnel to fulfill the request. As such, we
request additional crossing guards be allocated to the 94th Precinct as soon as possible to
ensure all students have a safe route to school.
We want to thank the Mayor for including $6.3 million for crossing guards and crossing
guard supervisors in the FY 2018 Executive Budget. Crossing guards are crucial to the
safety of our children, and we all support efforts by the New York City Council to ensure
that these funds are kept in the enacted budget. Our districts certainly warrant additional
crossing guards.
Largely a result of the Citys 2005 rezoning, North Brooklyn has experienced extremely
robust residential and commercial growth. The population of Brooklyn Community
District 1, which the 94th Precinct serves, increased nearly 8% from 2000-2010 -- the
largest increase of any Brooklyn Community District -- according to the Department of
City Planning.
Unfortunately, services have not kept pace with the increase in pedestrians, cyclists and
motorists. We have seen construction projects and film shoots commonly shift traffic
patterns, creating unpredictability and confusion. Crossing guards can provide an added
level of security for adults and children while they traverse intersections.
The safety of our constituents is paramount, especially when it involves children. We
believe allocating additional crossing guards to the 94th Precinct is one step closer to
fulfilling every childs right to have a safe route to school.
