INSTRUCTION: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IN SECTION A AND ANY OTHER FOUR
QUESTIONS IN SECTION B; TIME ALLOWED: 3 HOURS
Section A: Answer all questions in this section (40 marks).
1. A load 50kN acts at a distance 2m from one support of a simply supported beam Fig. Q1
of span 7m and flexural rigidity EI. Determine the spring stiffness and the frequency of
vibration in the vertical direction in term of EI assuming the weight of thr beam is
negligible.
2. A static load 80kN originally applied to the deflected simply supported beam of Fig. Q1
is suddenly removed. Derive an expression for the vibrations that will ensure as a result
of sudden removal of the load.
3. (a) Define natural frequency and what is meant by fundamental natural frequency?
(b) A mass spring dashpot system is shown in Figure Q3. If at time t the mass has moved
a distance u from its original undisturbed position and the spring has a stiffness k and
dashpot viscous damping c
i. Write the equation for the undamped and damped free vibration, and for each vibration,
sketch the distance-time graph.
ii. Show that the displacement at time t1 i.e. u(t1) from original position is the same as

displacement at time w + t1 , if the expression for u(t1) sin ( wt 1+ ) .
iii. By applying the Newtons second law of motion, give the homogeneous differential
equation of the motion.
iv. What is the characteristics differential equation for the system and obtain the
expression for the oscillatory motion, w

5. The rectangular plane frame Fig. Q5 has a very stiff girder of mass m and flexible column
of constant bending rigidity EI.

A steel frame fixed at base consisting of four legs each being a steel flanged section (I =
30x106 mm2, Z = 300x103 mm3, length = 4.0 m), supports a rigid steel table. A rotating
motor with an unbalance mass of 250kg at an eccentricity of 40mm is mounted on the
table. If the total mass of the table and the motor is 2800 kg, find the range of speed of
the motor over which the maximum flexural stress in the leg will exceed 120 MPa.
A cantilever beam with a tip mass of 20 kg is subjected to a harmonic load as shown in
the figure. If the vibration amplitude is 0.8mm, then find the frequency of excitation.
Assume, I = 2x10-8 m4, E = 200x109 N/m2. F0 = 250N.
A mass of 60kg is dropped into the end of a cantilever beam with a velocity of 0.9 m/s.
the mass sticks to the beam and vibrate with the beam. The I beam made of steel (E =

vibration by releasing it (at time t = 0) from a displacement of 20mm. if the maximum
displacement on the return swing is 12mm at time t = 0.64 s, determine:
a. The lateral spring stiffness k
b. The damping ratio
c. The damping coefficient c
