February 2017

Community Meeting Tuesday, February 7, 7:30 PM, Harbel (5807 Harford Rd)
Agenda:
Pam Wallace, Healthy Neighborhoods
Provide an overview of the Healthy Neighborhoods program and how it can benefit
residents of Waltherson.

Presidents Letter
February is here and were in full swing planning the 2017 year for Waltherson.
Were aiming to have another cookout in late spring like we did last year but we need to raise funds to pull this off.
In line with that weve talked with the owners and management of Clementine in doing a happy hour fundraiser in
February. Join us on Wednesday, February 22nd between 5 and 7 PM and share a drink with your neighborhoods.
Mention Waltherson while you order your drink and a dollar from your purchase will go to the community to help
us fund our annual cookout.
I believe social events such as this are a critical part of our efforts to build the sense of community in our
neighborhood. If these events are successful we hope to expand them to other venues in our neighborhood.
Some ideas of future locations could be the restaurant at SoHa Union that is moving quickly along, the new Batch
Bake Shop that will replace Hamilton Bakery, the new location of Zekes Coffee in SoHa Row, Walther Gardens, and
Bmore Lounge on Belair Road. Please join us on Wednesday, February 22 nd and talk to us about what youd like to
see.
We have a community meeting coming up in February on the 7 th. Pam Wallace will be our speaker and will speak
about the healthy neighborhood program. If you live on a target block such as the 4100 block of Hamilon, 3000 3300 blocks of Gibbons, 3000-3400 blocks of Echodale, 3000-3300 blocks of Rueckert, 3800-4000 blocks of
Ridgecroft, 3800-4000 blocks of Woodlea, or 3800-4000 blocks of Southern, I would strongly encourage you to
come out. There is grant money available for projects on your streets.
Some questions were raised at our last community meeting about the Harford Road Bridge Project. The Baltimore
Brew did an article about the cost overruns of the project this month and conversations with Councilman Dorsey
suggest the plan is for the project to move forward in 2017. Were hopeful this long-delayed infrastructure project
will finally begin to move forward.
Finally, as you may recall the memorial clock for Dr. Russo who was murdered back in 1981 was destroyed in an
accident last year. Hamilton-Lauraville Mainstreet is trying to raise additional funds to restore the clock. You can
find details below in the newsletter.
Look forward to seeing you all in February!
Kind Regards,
Robert J. Walshe, WIA president

Celtic guitar god. ~ Baltimore City Paper.
Breathtakingbrilliant technique, always in service of the music. ~ Guitar Player.
A musician whose technical skill and stylistic expertise are second to nonea time-served folkie of the highest
calibre. ~ Classical Guitar (U.K.).
Robin Bullock is a prolific composer and multi-instrumentalist, whose virtuosity on guitar, cittern and mandolin
blends the ancient melodies of the Celtic lands and their vigorous Appalachian descendants into one powerful
musical vision. The 17th-century harp tunes of legendary Irish bard Turlough OCarolan, the spirited jigs and reels
of rural Ireland, the haunting ballads of the southern Appalachians and evocative original compositions all find a
musical common ground in Robins music, where lightning-fast fingerwork one moment is perfectly balanced with
tender, quiet intimacy the next. A warm, friendly presence onstage, Robin effortlessly creates a magical world for
the audience with his multi-instrumental wizardry, taking them on a journey to the heart and soul of Celtic and
American traditions.
Dazzling spiritwhat he offers is not just virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity, but also the sensibility of one on a
quest between past and present, traditional and modern. ~ Trad Magazine (France).
Originally rising to prominence as a founding member of the innovative acoustic world-music trio Helicon, Robins
solo career has won him three Washington Area Music Association WAMMIE Awards, a Governors Award from
the Maryland State Arts Council, and a feature broadcast on National Public Radios hugely popular Celtic music
program The Thistle and Shamrock.

NECOP Northeast Citizens on Patrol

In Northeast Baltimore we have a district wide Citizens on Patrol program called NECOP. The
reasoning behind the COP program is that regular neighborhood patrols can make criminals feel
uncomfortable and drive them out of our neighborhood. Communities with regular NECOP
patrols, such as the North Harford neighborhood, also see significantly less crime than
communities with inactive patrols.
Participants meet at the Northeast Police station at 1900 Argonne Drive near Morgan State and
an officer will give you a direct number to keep them in contact with the Police. You would then
proceed to patrol the neighborhood in your car. Patrols normally go out each Thursday and
Friday from about 7:30 - 10:30. For anyone interested in the Citizens on Patrol program, please
contact Rob at Robert.walshe@gmail.com
