Psych Challenge 1: Survey Project

Part 1:
HYPOTHESIS: We predict that most students (about 70%) learn better in class using their cell
phone on a regular basis than students who dont.
REASONING: Cell phones are very popular now and its very rare that a student doesnt own
one or use one in class. Technology is changing everyday and so are the things we learn, and
students need their cells phones to be able to keep up.
SAMPLE: We will survey at least 20 Bullard Havens Students and or other young adults in High
School or College age 14 & up

a. yes no maybe
11. If you DO use your cell phone, do you think you would have a more difficult time in class if
you were unable to use your cell phone at all?
a. yes no maybe
PLANNING: We plan to conduct our survey by first creating the survey on google forms.

Next well share our survey with the public so students in high school and/or college can take
the survey. Some potential problems we see ourselves coming across while conducting the
survey is, students not feeling comfortable answering the entire survey truthfully. Also, many
students if not all do have a cell phone so that may affect the results negatively considering we
need at least 1 student who doesnt own or use their cell phone in class.
PART 2:
SURVEY RESULTS:
CYNTHIA REFLECTION: O
ur hypothesis was proven that most students learn better in class
and earn good grades as opposed to the students who dont use their cell phone. I also found
that based off our survey, Females tend to use their cell phones in class more than males, but
as far as grades go, they hold their grades well. I personally think that for the students that
constantly use their cell phones for work and answers, if their phone was suddenly taken away
we would see a slight drop in grades bc they no longer have that source giving them what they
need. I would change some of the questions that we asked, for example the last 2 questions,
mostly because i realize now that you wont really know if you would do worse or even better
with or without your cell phone unless you had to actually do it for a long period of time to see
how it would affect you. So it was mostly a guessing answer and not really an answer that we
couldve used to pull facts and use towards our ultimate question being answered.
CORINNA REFLECTION: For our survey our hypothesis was proven to be true. Students who
use their cellphones in class do learn better than those who dont. From our results, it looked
like males and females use their phones about the same amount in class but females tend to
get better grades in school. I also noticed that students prefer to use their cellphones in class
because it helps them with their grades. I thought this was interesting because usually people
say that phones are a distraction in school but from our survey results, we discovered
otherwise. I think phones do benefit students in a good way in class because it can help them
when they need it and even help them learn, getting better grades in school. If I could change
anything in this survey I would agree with Cynthia, because I felt like the last 2 questions
werent really proving anything, but was more like the opinions of students doing better or
worse. Conducting this survey has been interesting because I actually would have never
thought wed see the results that we did, and it was a good topic to do a survey on.
LESLIE REFLECTION: When doing our survey project, our hypothesis was that most students
learn better when using their phones than to students who dont use their phone during class.
We discovered that males tend to not use their phones as much as females. However, both,
females and males both maintain the average of a A or B in their classes. In my opinion,
students that use their phone during class is to benefit them.Students prefer using their phones
for assistance instead of raising their hands and asking their teacher for the help. They get stuck
and instead of asking the teacher for assistance they rather use their phone that is near them. I
personally think that if we take phones away from students they wouldnt have the advantage to

seek help when the help isnt being providing it and possibly dropping their academic grades. If I
had the chance to change something about our survey, I would agree with both my partners. I
would change the questions to be more specific and not to be an opinionated answer. As a
result of this survey I received some interesting facts on how students learn and work better. It
was an interesting survey in general.
