7th Grade Unit 4: Expressions and Equations

Prerequisite Skills:
Understanding what a variable is
Identifying inverse operations
Fluently computing with rational numbers
Solving 1 and 2 step algebraic equations and inequalities with all positive rational numbers
UNIT OVERVIEW: In this unit students will extend their knowledge of algebraic equations and
inequalities from 6th grade to include all rational number coefficients. Students will apply properties of
operations to add, subtract, factor and expand linear equations. Students will solve for the value of a
variable in an equation and an inequality using inverse operations. Students will graph the solution to
an inequality on a number line. Finally, students will also be expected to be able to create algebraic
expressions, equations and inequalities that to represent a given situation.

Learning Target 1: I can combine like terms to simplify algebraic expressions.
