1. Introduction
This documents details the procedures to be followed whilst undertaking the installation
of Sacrificial Anode Magnesium Ribbon Anodes for the buried pipelines.
The Sacrificial Anode CP System shall provide protection against corrosion for the
external surface of the pipeline exposed to corrosive environment.
2. Installation Personnel
1. Identify the location of the Test Station. Small part of the pipeline coating needs
to be removed for Thermit-Welding process.
2. After removal of the coating of size approx. 150x150mm, clean the pipe surface
to expose the bare steel.
3. Use the Thermit Welding Mould and its accessories for cable to pipeline
connection. Strip the cable sheathing to expose the copper core. Place the exposed
core in the Mould. Empty the powder into the Mould and close the lid.
Hold the Mould firmly and ignite the powder using the flint gun provided. Safety
Goggles and Gloves must be worn at this stage.
An exothermic reaction take place in the Mould and fuse the cable to pipe. Slowly
remove the Mould. Test the new connection by hammering the weld joint a few
times.

4. Clean the new weld joint and its surrounding. Use the Corrosion Cap designed for
Thermit-Welding.
5. Place the cable neatly aboveground for connection to Test Station. Label the Pipe
Cable by using Blue PVC Tape.
1. Upon completion of excavation for the Anode trench, remove the Magnesium
Ribbons from its packaging. The Ribbons are rolled up, straighten the Ribbons and
align next to the pipeline.
2. Inspect the anodes for damages, look out for any expose core.
3. Cut the ribbon to 185m. At both end of the ribbons, remove some parts of the anode
to expose the core. Splice the core with XLPE/PVC Cable. Use the provided
Splicing Kit. Label the Anode cable by using White PVC Tape.
4. Lower the ribbon into the Anode trench, straighten the ribbon using rocks. Do not
use any metallic items as weight. Place all ribbons next to each other at spacing
approx. 100mm.
5. Once all Ribbons are in the trench as per the approved drawings, pour Gypsum
Bentonite into the trench. Ensure all parts of the ribbons are completely covered
with the powder.
6. Install the Reference cell next to the pipeline. Ensure its cable is labelled with Green
PVC Tape. Place the cable tail above ground.
7. Backfill the Anode trench using sand or soil. Backfilling the pipeline can also be
carried out at this stage.
1. Ensure all cables from anodes and pipelines are routed towards the Test Station. The
cables can be protected underground by using PVC Pipe.
2. Identify all the cables (pipe, anode & reference cell). Lead the cables into the Test
Station. Terminate the cable at the provided Terminal Board.
1. Upon completion installation of Test Station, measure the Pipe Potential, Anode
Potential and Refence cell Potential using the Portable CuCuS04 Reference cell.
Record the readings.
2. Remeasure again the Pipe Potential & Anode Potential by using Zinc Reference cell
that has been buried near to the pipeline. Record these readings.
3. Using a small cable, bond the Pipe and Anode terminal together. Measure the Pipe
Potential again using both Portable CuCuS04 and Zinc Reference cells. Record these
readings.
4. The Sacrificial Anode CP System has been commissioned. Measure the Pipe
Potential again after 1-2 weeks to ensure the Potential is above -850mV w.r.t
CuCuS04 or +266mV w.r.t Zinc Reference cells.
