Founded in 1860, today the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) is an internationally
renowned professional institution whose members are involved at all levels in the design,
construction, repair and operation of ships, boats and marine structures in over 90 countries.

organisations world-wide.

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
There are classes of RINA membership to suit all those involved or interested in the design, construction,
maintenance and operation of marine vessels and structures. The classes of membership reflect the levels
of education, training, experience and professional responsibility achieved. The requirements for
membership are:

Fellows (FRINA)

Having achieved professional standing in the maritime community, and having held positions of superior
responsibility for a period of at least five years;

Member (MRINA)

Holding an approved diploma or degree in a subject relevant to the design, construction, maintenance
and operation of marine vessels and structures;
or
Offering experience in lieu of a formal academic qualification;
and
Having achieved the required standard of professional competence required for full membership of the
Institution;
Associate Member (AMRINA)

Actively seeking to achieve the standards of professional competence required for full membership,
through individual or company training programmes and experience;
or
Studying full-time for an approved post graduate course in a subject relevant to the design, construction,
maintenance and operation of marine vessels and structures;
or
Involved in a technical capacity with an activity relating to the construction, maintenance and operation of
marine vessels and structures;

Student Member

Studying full-time for an approved diploma or degree in a subject relevant to the design, construction,
maintenance and operation of marine vessels and structures.

Associate (AssocRINA)

Having an interest or involvement in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of marine
vessels and structures, in a non technical capacity.
