TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

When the custom of the stational liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twentieth
century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the stational church of Santa Croce in
Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem.
The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the grounds of the
Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Constantine. She dedicated her life to finding
the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the
long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the
city of Rome for Avignon, the religious institutions of Rome collapsed and the church was abandoned. Centuries
later it was given into the care of monks. Amazingly, it concealed a forgotten treasure. In 1492 repairmen took
down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscription Title of the Cross, and within, an ancient wooden
tablet on which was carved the inscription dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
No one is certain that this is authentic, although its discovery was enough to give the church great prestige
among pilgrims. The veneration of the relic of the cross located here was a factor in shaping our restored Holy
Week.

Dear Father Gem: I love reading your bulletin article every week.
Im a fan. This time though, Id like you to make a little detour of your
weekly column. I hope my humble request will merit a positive response.
It is very easy to strive towards the attainment of our goals and
objectives when the oceans are calm and nothing appears to be standing
in our way. However, if we are not mentally prepared the moment
something begins to stir the waters and rock the boat from side-to-side,
we begin to panic and struggle to deal with our circumstances. We see
these problems and challenges sometimes as larger than life.
I understand how tough the job of the priests is. I personally
know some priests who ended up quitting and throwing in the towel of
defeat, all because their resolve wasnt strong enough to handle the
burdens associated with their vocation. Am sorry for the intrusion, but
my instinct is telling me that the weight youre carrying inside you is
affecting you personally. Whatever it is youre undergoing right now,
Father Gem, you can never give up; you can never quit.
Yes, there will always be people who will purposefully try to
sabotage your progress by doing things that will throw you off course in
order to serve their own personal interests. But if you really think about
it, there are a multitude of other people who are relying on you to excel
and succeed with achieving your goals and objectives. Think about all
the people in this parish: the kids, parents, families, friends, the people
you care about most, etc. How much each of them is relying on you to
succeed in your field of endeavor? If you do not do this for yourself,
then at least succeed for them. Theyre all behind you. We love you.

BSJ, Concerned Friend
Dear BSJ: Thank you for your concern and very uplifting and
heartwarming words. Youre right, my friend, the funny thing about life is
that it sometimes has a habit of presenting us with a myriad of
opportunities presenting themselves to us as unimaginable problems. Over
time, our negative emotions usually turn into uncontrollable fears that
direct and dictate our daily decisions and actions. These fears will rob us
of our life essence and desire to successfully move past the obstacles that
stand in our way.
Cardinal Castrilln Hoyos once said to priests that they should
not "be intimidated by difficulties in the ministry. The priestly vocation,
planted in you with efficacy by Christ and accepted by you with generous
humility, will bear abundant fruit in such a fertile terrain."
"The priest is a thing of immensity, if he himself were to realize
it he would die," the good Cardinal explains, quoting St. John Vianney, the
Cur of Ars.
I have no reason to make excuses. Yes, I sometimes delve
into the details of the problems and obstacles that I face on a daily basis.
To say that they werent affecting my behavior is obviously not true and in
fact an understatement. Yet, it is important to understand that in some
ways our excuses are sometimes blessings in disguise, as they provide us
with an insight into the self-sabotaging forces that are dominating our
current reality and process of thinking.
A wise man once said, It is not so much what happens to us
that actually makes a difference, it is rather what we do with what
happens to us that determines where we will end up, what we will have,
and how we will be transformed by our experiences.
We, priests, are called upon to celebrate the most important
times in our parishioners lives. We baptize your children, celebrate the
weddings of your sons and daughters, and bury your loved ones. We visit

your friends and family in the
hospital. You invite us to share your hopes
and your fears in our offices. You humble
us with your sincere desire for forgiveness
in the confession.
The priest is called not just to teach about the Lord but also to
make the experience of Jesus real for the people. Many times we are aware
when this is happening. Sometimes, though, we are totally unaware. It
makes no difference. It is the Lord working, not us, in fact, sometimes it
is the Lord working despite us.
It is a very humbling experience to be a priest. We know how very
limited we are in all aspects of our lives, including our spirituality and our
personal living of Christianity; yet, God still works through us.
One of the nicest things that anyone has said to me was when
the gentleman in our parish told me: You really love being a priest, dont
you? Thats the truth. I love being a priest. I love being called on in all
sorts of different situations. I love baptizing children and watch them
grow. I love the hugs they give me on Sundays. I love watching their
parents grow as they give more and more of themselves to their children,
to each other, and, in the same action, to the Lord. I love helping young
couples prepare for marriage and then celebrating their big day with them.
I love Life Teen. I love doing things you wouldnt expect anyone would
love. I love being called upon in moments of crisis and grief. I love
reminding people at the most difficult times of their lives that God is with
them. I enjoy saying Mass. I enjoy the liturgical seasons. They force me
to examine my own living of the life of Christ: my need for Christ during
Advent, the presence of Christ during Christmastime, my frail humanity
during Lent, the eternal gifts of the Lord during Easter, the life of the Sprit
at Pentecost, and the ever new message of Christ during the year. Do you
really think I would give up; that I would quit?
As a final thought, Id thought I leave you with a famous poem
that was once given to me by my late grandfather to help cultivate the
attitude of persistence within my heart. The author of this poem is
unknown, however this persons heart and determination speak louder
than words. I hope you enjoy it.
When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road youre trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must but dont you quit.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver lining of the seeds of doubt,
And you can never tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far.
So, stick to the fight when youre hardest hit,
Its when things go wrong that you must not quit.
Life for a priest is good, very good. Now, I must ask all the
parents reading this article. Can you convey to your children how beautiful
the life of the priest is? Who knows they might respond to the call. The
Blessed Virgin Mary constantly says to us: "Do whatever he tells you."
