DERIVATIONAL MORPHOLOGY (3)

1.Compare Selkirks model to WF with Liebers view on the

morphological processes.
2.State the Feature Percolation Conventions
3. Analyze the following words in Liebers terms:
unkindness, standardize, counterattack, driver, brotherhood, purity.
4.a) In early generative grammars, the syntactic valency of verbs used to
be encoded in distributional frames known as subcategorization frames:
e.g. meet: V [_ NP] Mary will meet [Tom]

(i)State the subcategorization frames for the predicates below:

Mary is sleeping/Tom opened the door/ They put the baby in the
crib/They thought about the problem.

(b)In Government Binding Theory the subcategorization frame is

derived from the argument structure or thematic structure of the
predicate. The arguments of the predicates represent the number of
participants required by the event denoted by the predicate and each
argument plays a role (known as theta-role, or semantic role)

e.g. Danny put the cake in the oven Put: V [Ag, Th, Loc]
Agent. Theme Locative

(i) State the argument structure of the predicates in the sentences

below; identify the external argument and the internal argument of the
predicates; say whether all arguments are obligatory:

Tom opened the door with a key/The key opened the door/Peter sang a
lullaby for the baby/John broke the window with a hammer/The hammer
broke the window/The window broke

(c) It has long been acknowledged that morphological processes may

change the valency of the base. Study the sentences below and identify the
changes that have occurred after affixation (if any):

(i) The City Council developed the city

The City Councils development of the city/The development of
the city by the City Council
(ii) The grammar generates compounds
The grammar is generative*of compounds

(iii) He ran
He outran Mary
(iv) Tom calculated our time of arrival
when we would arrive
Tom miscalculated our time of arrival
*when we would arrive
(v) He thought about the problem
He rethought *about the problem
He rethought the problem

(d) Discuss the impact of the affixation of -able, -en, -ify, -ize on the
argument structure of the lexical item they attach to in terms of Williams
hypothethis (internalization, externalization)

(i) They read the novel/ The novel is readable

(ii) This bridge is wide/ They widened the bridge
(iii) The water is pure/They purified the water
(iv) Their activities are not regular/They are regularizing their activities
