PHARMACEUTICAL
CHEMISTRY
Pharmaceutical chemistry is an interdisciplinary science that deals with drug design and synthesis, drug formulation and testing,
as well as the delivery of drugs in the body. In view of the increase in the occurrence of existing and new diseases, continuous work
in the discovery of new drugs that have high therapeutic efficacies but minimal side effects is necessary. Pharmaceutical chemists play
a significant role in this global effort in drug discovery and also in drug development.

The IMU Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme introduces students to all aspects of the pharmaceutical industry, with a strong
emphasis on the detailed understanding of the physical and chemical properties of chemical compounds as well as their reactions.
Students are trained in the application of modern information and scientific technologies in drug development, safety and efficacy
studies. Elements of team work, communication and lifelong learning skills are incorporated into the curriculum throughout the
programme in order to prepare graduates who are versatile and adaptive in the future places of employment, which are not only
limited to the pharmaceutical industry.

Through this course, the students will receive a focused and

specialised training on various pharmaceutical drug
development techniques. The programme will prepare
graduates to be well-equipped with contemporary knowledge
and skills that are pre-requisite for a rewarding career in the
pharmaceutical sector as well as for a postgraduate study in a
relevant field.

titrimetric techniques, instrumental techniques, basic synthetic chemistry
techniques, spectroscopy and chromatography.
Extensive training in pharmaceutical analysis, including method
development and validation, pharmaceutical formulation and
pharmaceutical technology.
Exposure to research methodology and opportunity to conduct
research, with training in preparation of professional-style research
reports such as dissertation and oral presentations.
Industrial attachment that enables students to gain valuable industrial
experience and establish networking with the industry.
Elective major modules that provide exposure to chemistry-related
professions in industries other than the pharmaceutical industry.

KEY
Free elective that enables students to further develop interests of
their choice.
Broad career options for the graduates. Besides the

FACTS
pharmaceutical industry, the graduates can find employment
opportunities in the oleochemical, food, biotechnology,
cosmetics and toiletries industries. They can also work as
clinical trial coordinators or continue to pursue postgraduate
training in related disciplines.

not registrable for practice as a pharmacist in Malaysia at the moment.

04 WHO ARE THE TEACHING STAFF?

The programme is taught by a team of local and overseas trained full-time
lecturers, many of them with extensive experience in various industries
locally and abroad. Besides, guest lecturers from relevant industries are
also invited to share with the students the latest industrial practices. The
students will also be guided by industrial supervisors during the industrial
attachment.

05 HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Students will be assessed through class tests, practicals, projects,
workshops, written reports, logbooks, assignments, portfolios,
presentations (oral/poster), dissertation, peer assessments and end-
of-semester examinations.

06 ARE THERE ANY INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENTS?

11 WHEN DO I APPLY FOR A PLACE IN IMU?

You can apply using forecast or actual results.
The International Medical University (IMU) began in 1992 as the International Medical College,
or IMC, Malaysias first private medical college. IMC became a University in 1999, but the
University has remained true to key elements of the IMC vision, which are to widen access
to professional healthcare education, and to use innovative, integrated and student-centred
means in providing that education.
This vision required strong links to be forged, from the outset, with reputable Partner Medical
Schools committed to excellence and who share our educational philosophy. It was our
progressive, systems based, integrated medical curriculum that first caught the imagination
of our Partner Medical Schools, and today we collaborate with partner universities in
Australasia, North America, Ireland and the United Kingdom. This successful collaboration
then expands to the pharmacy and health sciences programmes at world-class universities
in Scotland, Australia, New Zealand and China.
Since 1999, the Universitys growth and development has been in developing clinical
schools in Seremban, Batu Pahat and Kuala Pilah, our own Honours degree courses in
Pharmacy and Nursing, and in establishing research as a core activity, together with
development of postgraduate research Masters and PhD programmes. We are already
the preferred private school for medicine and pharmacy in Malaysia. Our growth has
been supported by heavy investment in infrastructure development and expansion
at Bukit Jalil and Seremban, and in the recruitment of staff of high calibre. In 2008,
we have introduced Honours degree courses in Dentistry, Nutrition & Dietetics, Medical
Biotechnology, Psychology, Biomedical Science and in Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
In common with our MBBS, BPharm and BNursing, these courses have been designed
from first principles by our faculty. Bachelor of Nursing Science (Hons) was introduced
in 2009, a programme targeted solely for registered nurses to upgrade their
qualification from diploma level to a degree level.
In 2010, we introduced Chiropractic programme, the first of its kind and only complete
educational programme in Malaysia as well as in all of Southeast Asia. Then, in
February 2011, IMU launched the Chinese Medicine programme. The programme
will focus on combining medical education and scientific research, offering the full
array of medical both Chinese Medicine and Western.
To date, the University offers undergraduate degree programmes in Medicine,
Dentistry, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Nursing, Nursing Science,
Nutrition & Dietetics, Psychology, Biomedical Science, Medical Biotechnology, IMU Clinical School, Batu Pahat
Chiropractic, Chinese Medicine as well as postgraduate degrees MSc Medical
Sciences or Community Health by research, PhD in Medical & Health Sciences
by research and MSc (Public Health). We believe our courses to be progressive
and innovative, and we strive to use best practice in their delivery and
assessment.
We continue to seek to widen access to healthcare education, and to grow
into a centre of healthcare educational excellence in the Asia-Pacific region.
