Report of activities at the Library Teodoro Kint, Los Pocitos, Centro Recreativo.

Period June to
October 2016 Amigos de Holanda

In the first instance, we thank the valuable support of the Santa Rosa Fund which allows us to carry out the
services provided to the community of El Viejo, Chinandega. These are in the field of education to the
Library, scholarships to the community of Los Pocitos and in the area of training from the Centro Recreativo.

The Library offers its services to the schools in El Viejo. Between June and October the breakdown of
attendees is:

14 primary schools

8 colleges and institutes offering secondary education.

3 universities

Josefa Arguello School, which is situated on the outskirts of the city, has registered the largest attendance.
Those children who attend have the least resources.

Number of people who attended

Month Users
June 449
July 260
August 383
September 312
October 543

The Library also offers a photocopy service to its users. In addition, craftwork is taught and reading is
promoted through the story telling corners.

Before the departure of the Sisters Mercedarias the decision had been taken to close the Library because of
low use as a result of an increase in the use of internet however, on further investigation we discovered that
the users of the Library are those who do not have access to the internet. Therefore the decision to close
would have left many children without the possibility of carrying out their work and research.

Projections for 2017

1. We have considered that it is important to provide training to the child users of the Library in
technical skills that they can take with them when they move up to secondary school. To enable this
we believe the we will need at least 3 computers and offer computer training courses during the year.
2. We will reactivate contact with the National Library with the objective of having access to training
and new materials.

Los Pocitos

We will continue to offer scholarships. It has not been possible to approach the community because the bad
winter destroyed the access road. We have scheduled to visit in the new year.

Centro Recreativo

Education is the starting point for development for everyone.

During these months of work, the Centro Recreativo has carried out their interventions so that young
children, adolescents and adults have access to educational processes which in other surroundings they will
not find.

A total of 601 have attended, illustrated in the graph below showing monthly attendance

The different activities are focussed on human development. Among the activities we have undertaken
recently are:

A meeting with boys and girls of migrant families: with whom Saturdays, we meet to talk about
themes such as no to violence, migration, personal growth and care plus protecting the natural
environment and others.
Training workshops in the communities: as a centre we see the opportunity to talk with the youth,
at times during these last 5 months we have given workshops about sexual reproductive health and
no to violence where the participants reflect and express their main concerns.
Dance and handicraft classes: this space has been created for all ages so as to allow them to
develop their creative sense and artistic skills, in their own time they are trained in different themes
such as personal growth, self esteem, and above all in these classes education values are important
where we teach them to be friendly amongst themselves, with the environment that surrounds them,
to respect, share and be generous with those who can.
Other educational programmes: at certain times the coordinator responsible for development has
trained groups of organisations on topics of common interest. Within these they have addressed
working with children, masculinity, analysis in the context of HIV and no to violence. These have
been delivered through gatherings, meetings or cinema forums. This methodology is part of the work
of the Centro Recreativo.

As The Centre we wish to continue educating those that we can and it is for this that our energy is
concentrated in educational proposals which are of interest to the people who visit our space so we can
offer the children, adolescents youth and adults the opportunity to continue growing and that they can
contribute to making society more fair and equitable.
