Redwood Citys Dragon Theater sets its eyes on being a community resource

Its safe to say that Meredith
Hagedorn has learned a thing or two
about bringing live theater produc-
tions to life on a shoestring budget.
Hagedorn started the Dragon Theatre
in 2000 with a dream to produce plays
telling the stories she wanted to tell,
and without a physical location. Seven
years later, she found herself entering a
five-year lease on an office space in
downtown Palo Alto with $12,000 in
the theaters bank account.
Now in the theaters fifth year in
Redwood City and 17th year since she
started it, Hagedorn and her team have
been unlocking stories their audience
members might have never encoun-
tered otherwise, showcasing an aver-
age of eight lesser-known plays at the
65-person theater each year. As the
theater prepares for a packed season in
2017, she and her team are ready to
share what they have learned with
aspiring artists and other community
organizations.
It took a couple years for people to
say, Oh yeah, the Dragon Theatre,
Ive been meaning to go, she said.
Just as the theaters name recogni-
tion has spread among its supporters,
it has also spread throughout commu-
nity organizations and even small
startups looking for a space to meet.

Car burglary suspects arrested
Carjacking and foot chase leads to apprehension of two of three men

Two of three suspects connected to sever-
al vehicle burglaries in South San Francisco
were arrested Wednesday following a car-
jacking and foot chase, police said.
Pinole resident Brandon Barrett and
Fairfield resident Aloyouis Bruce were
arrested and booked into the county jail on
suspicion of offenses such as felony vehicle
burglary, felony carjacking and obstructing
officers.
Events leading up to the arrests began at
7:30 p. m. when officers responded to
reports of vehicle burglaries that occurred
recently in hotel and business parking lots
on Airport and South Airport boulevards,
according to police.
A witness in one of the burglaries alleged-
ly saw the suspects drive away south on
South Airport Boulevard in a red minivan.

Responding officers saw the minivan in a
parking lot of a warehouse store on South
Airport Boulevard.
When the officers tried to speak with the
suspects, the driver allegedly ran away. An
officer ran after the driver, who allegedly
carjacked a Mercedes-Benz from an employ-
ee of a rental car company.
The employee escaped injury, according
to police.
Another officer saw the alleged carjacker
drive away on South Airport Boulevard. He
collided with two vehicles at a red light and
kept going.
No one was injured in the collision,
police said.
The officer began following the
Mercedes, which went north on Highway
101 until it became disabled on the highway
near Oyster Point Boulevard.
The suspect got out of the vehicle and
started running. Officers established a
perimeter and following a second chase, the
suspect was arrested in a train car.
At the warehouse store, a second suspect
was arrested when he was found hiding in the
parking lot.
A third suspect is still at large, according
to police.
Officers found stolen goods from at least
eight burglaries in the suspects minivan,
police said. Barrett is being held on
$200,000 bail while Bruce is being held on
$50,000 bail.

clothing and possibly chasing cars on East
Hillsdale Boulevard fled when officers
arrived. One juvenile was cited for petty
theft and released to a parent before 2:34

Obituary
Marjorie James Cranstone
Marjorie James Cranstone died a year ago, age 94, on January 1, 2016.
Raised in Colorado, Marjorie moved to California seeking post-
WWII opportunities. An avid ballroom dancer, she met and married
her beloved husband of 50 years, Alvie Cranstone. They raised
their beloved daughters, Charlene and Jeanne in Belmont. After her
retirement, Marjorie and Alvie moved to South Lake Tahoe enjoying
precious years together. After Alvies death she enjoyed neighbor
visits and travels and stays with her sister Lola and husband Carl.
After a fall in 2010, she moved to Palo Alto where she became her daughters photographic model
and loved Roaring Camps steam train in Felton.
She is survived by her daughters, Charlene Gibson and Jeanne Nahs, and her sisters Lola Hissman
and Beth Jarrell. She is predeceased by her husband, Alvie Cranstone, brother Gail James, and
sisters Bonnie Linberg, Ava Nance, and Patsy James.
Marjorie and Alvie were buried together Jan 26, 2016 at Sacramento Valley Natl Cemetery after a
private ceremony. Forever together...as they wished.

Cortez Avenue, Burlingame, California, 94010. Internment will occur privately, with family only,
at the Italian Cemetery in Colma the following day.

Pearl S. Lee-Hing
August 28, 1914 January 15, 2017
Pearl S. Lee-Hing, a longtime Burlingame resident, with
deep commitment to her faith went home on January 15,
2017 in Chico, CA. Pearl was 99 years young.
She was the devoted mother of three children: Garrick
(Galina), Anthia Hauffman (Charlie), and Collin
(Sheryl). Grandmother of Shelly (Ryan) Spratt, Mindy
(Tarik) McFall, Katie Lee and Kristi (Adam) Blazewick.
Her great grandchildren are: Tyler and Ayden Spratt, Ava
Lily McFall, Remmi, Yuno and Lillith Blazewick. She
is also survived by her sister Diana Yuen, step daughters Sherri Fong and Trina Hing-De
Bottom, many nieces and nephews and friends.
Born Pearl Seid on August 28, 1914 to Seid Pak Sing and Chow Siu in San Francisco.
Her father was a respected civic and business leader in Chinatown. Pearl worked as an
interpreter for immigration, commuting by ferry to Angel Island. Pearl married Wallace
F. Lee in 1940, they were married 47 years. They built their home in Burlingame in
1952 where she enjoyed raising her children, participating in her church, the Chi Matean
Womans group, and Asian Senior group. Pearl also worked as a key-punch data processer
for various companies including the San Mateo school district. . Pearl married Henry
Hing in 1990, they were married 15 years. She enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S,
Canada, Europe and Asia. In 2010 she moved to Chico to be near her sons. Pearl touched
everyone she met with her kindness, spunk and love of people. Friends and family are
invited to her memorial service Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1:00 pm at the Community Baptist
Church, 15 S. Humbolt St., San Mateo. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be
made to the Community Baptist Church.

Lillian Fleming, 96, passed away in her home of ve years in San Mateo on
Tuesday morning.
Born in Lyerly, GA on February 22, 1920, she was the daughter of the late
Lillian Pearl (Lipham) Mount and Paul Hill Mount of Summerville, GA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lewis Fleming and sons Raymond Fleming and
Gary Fleming.
Lillian took pride in having raised her three boys; Raymond, Gary & John and was a loving
grandmother and great-grandmother to their children and grandchildren.
A long-time resident of Middletown, CA, Lillian was a woman of great faith and a parishioner of
Middletown Bible Church.
Her beautiful smile and her strength of spirit will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Paul R. Amaya
announces his passing after a courageous battle with cancer
on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the age of 85.
Paul will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years,
Helen, and his two sons Paul (Kathleen and children Paul
and Sarah) and Mitchel (Karen and children Allison and
Danielle with former wife Marianne). Paul will also be
fondly remembered by his sister Amelia Kissling; sisters-in-
law Marilyn Amaya and Barbara Porata; and brother-in-law
Joe Bozzuto. Paul was predeceased by his mother Maria del
Refugio; his father Augustine Amaya; brothers Fred and Art;
and by sister Beatrice.
Paul was born in Redwood City on June 26, 1931 where he graduated from Sequoia High
School in 1950. He proposed to Helen Bozzuto on February 14, 1954 and they were married
August 29, 1954. Paul served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. Paul worked as a
journeyman sheet metal worker, eventually owning his own company, Rountree Sheet Metal.
He was a dedicated senior softball player, playing for over 30 years. Paul enjoyed fishing,
traveling with Helen, his Bay Area sports teams, Giants, 49ers and Warriors and spending
time with his four grandchildren.
Friends are invited to visit at Crippen and Flynn Woodside Chapel at 7:00 pm Monday, February
6. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, February 7 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Church.

Charles Charlie G. Ruocco, born Nov.
17, 1919, died Jan. 31, 2017.
He was born in Boston,
Massachusetts, one of
three siblings to Italian
immigrants. The family
journeyed to San
Francisco then to
Redwood City where he
learned the barber trade.
When World War II
broke out, Charlie was
proud to serve in the
Pacific Theater with the 41st Army Infantry
Division. His skill at barbering won him the
personal assignment to Maj. Gen. Horace
Fuller while in the service. Charlie chose the
Sunnyvale, Cupertino area to raise his family
of four daughters. His barber business flour-
ished in Palo Alto with his first shop on the
Stanford campus in 1949. He soon became
well known as the Crew Cut King. He con-
tinued his career into his 80s and always
found time to give haircuts to our Veterans at
the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital.
He loved dancing and golfing. We want to
thank the wonderful staff at Encina Care
Home for the loving care for the past seven
years.
Visitation will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday,
Feb. 6, 2017, at Crippen & Flynn Woodside
Chapel, 400 Woodside Road, Redwood City.

Hermann was incredibly passionate about
his family and friends. He was renowned for
spending time with his loved ones, writing
letters and making numerous well-wishing
phone calls daily.
He was a devoted parishioner of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Belmont
singing in the choir, throwing his annual
Oktoberfest and cultivating a beautiful
church memorial garden. Living life to the
fullest, he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing
and trips to his beloved cabin.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Belmont
with a 9:30 a.m. visitation, 10 a.m. rosary
and 10:30 a.m. funeral mass.

South City man gets 18
years prison for sex assault
A man convicted of repeatedly sexually
assaulting his daughters young friend over a
three-year period in his South San Francisco
home was sentenced to 18 years and 8 months
in state prison Friday, according to the San
Mateo County District Attorneys Office.
The defendants family and supporters were
in attendance in the courtroom, and the vic-
tims mother addressed the court and the
defendant describing the impact the defen-
dants actions had on her daughter, and that
she had found it in her heart to forgive him,
said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
On Dec. 15, a jury found Ronald Somoza
Lauron, now 45, guilty of 28 counts related
to the assaults, including forcible sexual pen-
etration, unlawful sex with a minor and dis-
suading a witness.
The abuse started in August 2011, when the
victim, then in eighth-grade, would routinely
visit Laurons home to have sleepovers with
his daughter, according to prosecutors.
The sleepovers happened weekly when the
victim was in the ninth- and 10th-grades and
the abuse included masturbation, digital pen-
etration, oral copulation and sexual inter-
course, according to prosecutors.
After the 10th-grade, the victim stopped
going to Laurons home to visit his daughter
and, several months later, she reported the
abuse to a school counselor who informed her
parents.
Lauron was arrested in October of 2014, but
had been out of jail on $750,000 bail until
the guilty verdict was delivered last month.

In delivering Laurons sentence, Judge
Leland Davis said he lacked true remorse and
insight into the wrongfulness of his conduct,
according to prosecutors.
Lauron has 60 days of credit for time served
in jail, and will be required to pay $6,408 in
restitution to the victim, with further
amounts to be determined. He was also
ordered to register as a sex offender for the
rest of his life, according to prosecutors.
Laurons defense attorney could not be
reached for comment.
Bay Area home sales drop, prices climb
December Bay Area home sales and prices
moved in opposite directions on a year-over-
year basis, research firm CoreLogic
announced.
New and existing home sales fell 9.1 per-
cent to 7,136 sales while the median home
prices jumped 4 percent.
Last month, the San Francisco Bay Areas
housing market posted its largest year-over-
year sales decline since last July, but theres a
caveat, CoreLogic research analyst Andrew
LePage said in a statement.
The number of deals recorded in December
2015 was artificially high the result of
then-new federal mortgage rules that caused
delays for many transactions that normally
would have closed the prior month.
LePage also attributed the decline to one
less business day in December 2016 com-
pared with the previous year and possibly to
the increase in mortgage rates in November.

closer toward confirmation as education sec-
retary Friday after clearing a major hurdle in
the Senate, even as Democrats and labor
unions fervently sought another Republican
vote against her.
Tensions flew on the Senate floor during
an early-morning session, with a senior
Republican saying DeVos will make an
excellent secretary and a top Democrat
calling her one of the worst nominees.
Republicans overpowered Democrats, vot-
ing 52-48 to cut off debate on the nomina-
tion, setting the stage for a final vote
Tuesday.
DeVos, a billionaire Republican donor,
has faced fierce criticism from labor unions
for her promotion of school choice.

treatment for stealing cop car
A transient man was sentenced to three
years of supervised probation and admis-
sion to the Veterans Treatment Court pro-
gram Friday after he pleaded no contest to
misdemeanor charges related to resisting a
police officer and stealing a police car last
year, according to the San Mateo County
District Attorneys Office.
Anzac Houchen, 26, was arrested Feb. 17
after he and two other friends got into a
fight with a San Mateo police officer late at
night. The officer stopped at an area on 19th
Avenue where several homeless individuals
had gathered and detained one of Houchens
friends for urinating in public. Another one
of Houchens friends, Joseph Gomez,
advanced toward the police officer and told
him to leave the friend alone. Houchen
approached the officers car, honked the
horn and yelled for help, according to pros-
ecutors.

have to break a 50-50 tie to gain DeVos con-
firmation.
Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, chair-
man of the Health, Education, Labor and
Pensions Committee, praised DeVos work
in reforming the school system through
charter schools.

have more choices, they are public schools
and Betsy Devos is in the forefront of help-
ing create that opportunity for public educa-
tion, Alexander said shortly after Fridays
vote limiting debate.

Houchen and told him to stop, Houchen
jumped into the car and drove it two blocks
before abandoning it and hiding his van,
which was parked nearby. Houchen was later
found and struggled with police officers
before being taken into custody. All three
men were drunk in public and a female friend
was found close to unconscious in the van.
The four had allegedly gotten drunk at a con-
cert earlier that night, according to prosecu-
tors.
Gomez already pleaded no contest to a
misdemeanor charge of resisting a police
officer and was sentenced with an 18-month
court probation. Houchen was sentenced to
264 days at the county jail and was given
credit for time served. He has no additional
jail time to serve, according to prosecutors.
Houchen is required to abstain from drugs
and alcohol while in the Veterans Treatment
Court program. He will next appear in
Veterans Court March 3 for an update on his
progress, according to prosecutors.

building under review
Redwood City Planning Commission to weigh
development proposal at downtown edge

Plans for a multi-story apartment building
at 801 Brewster Ave. are up for review at the
Redwood City Planning Commissions Feb.

The developer, the Anton Development
Company, is proposing a four- to six-story
structure to hold 250 units on a 1.6-acre plot
bordered by Arguello Street, Warren Street
and Brewster Avenue, according to a staff
report.
The structure will replace an existing
two-story office building and parking lot
with a mix of studios as well as one- and
two-bedroom rental units in a 379,502-
square-foot building. If approved, the
citys housing stock of market-rate units
will increase by 200 and the number of
below-market-rate units will increase by
50. This will leave 30 market-rate units and
149 below-market-rate units remaining
under the cap for the maximum number of
allowable resident units downtown, accord-
ing to the report.
The first floor will have residential units,
a lobby and parking. An additional level of
underground parking will bring the total
number of parking spaces to 320. A land-
scaped courtyard and two rooftop courtyards
above the fourth floor will provide recre-
ational spaces, according to the report.
The site lies on the western edge of the
downtown, and is bordered on the north by
the Mezesville Historic District. The devel-
oper is required to keep the building height

along Brewster Avenue under three stories
and use a specific architectural style to stay
consistent with the surrounding areas his-
toric buildings. The developer is requesting
that portions of the building height along
Brewster Avenue be allowed to reach four
stories, and that other portions along
Arguello and Warren streets, where the max-
imum is five stories, be allowed to reach six
stories, according to the report.
Attorney and downtown resident Geoff
Carr has previously opposed proposals for
new developments reaching heights he feels
are inconsistent with the historic qualities
of the area and increase congestion through-
out the city. Though he is unsure if he will
attend Tuesdays meeting, he said his views
on tall buildings in the downtown remain
largely unchanged.
Four [stories] would be much preferable
for the environment than six, he said. If
they had done a plan where they had kept it
at four to five stories throughout the down-
town plan area and paid more attention to
being more historically accurate around the
courthouse, I probably wouldnt have got-
ten involved.

Trump hits Iran with new sanctions for missile test

WASHINGTON The Trump administra-
tion ordered sanctions against more than
two dozen people and companies from the
Persian Gulf to China Friday in retaliation
for Irans recent ballistic missile test,
increasing pressure on Tehran without
directly undercutting a landmark nuclear deal
with the country.
Those targeted by the Treasury Department
include Iranian, Lebanese, Emirati and
Chinese individuals and firms involved in
procuring ballistic missile technology for
Iran. They are now prohibited from doing
any business in the United States or with
American citizens. The overall impact is
likely to be minimal on Irans economy,
though some of the people and companies
have relationships with Irans hard-line
Revolutionary Guard military forces.
The days of turning a blind eye to Irans
hostile and belligerent actions toward the
United States and the world community are

Despite the tough talk, the new sanctions
represent a continuation of the Obama
administrations limited punishment for
Irans ballistic missile activity and avoid a
direct showdown with Tehran over the

drawn up before Obama left office and dont

major government entity, making it unclear

El Chapo lawyers say jail
conditions are too strict in NYC
NEW YORK Hes locked up 23 hours a day. His wife
cant visit him. He cant call anyone, except his lawyers.
He even was denied water, his lawyers
say.
The strict jail conditions for notorious
Mexican drug lord and escape artist
Joaquin El Chapo Guzman were out-
lined on Friday by defense attorneys in a
failed bid to get a judge to loosen them.
Guzman smiled at his common-law
wife, Emma Coronel, as he was led into
Joaquin the Brooklyn courtroom under heavy
Guzman guard by deputy U.S. marshals at his sec-
ond court appearance since being
brought to the United States on Jan. 19.
This was so far the only way she has been able to see
him, defense attorney Michelle Gelernt said afterward with
a silent Coronel at her side.
Guzman, 59, has pleaded not guilty to charges of running
a massive drug trafficking operation that laundered billions
of dollars and oversaw murders and kidnappings. Hes being
held at a high-security federal jail in Manhattan, with U.S.
officials mindful of how he twice escaped from prison in
Mexico, the second time via a mile-long tunnel dug to the
shower in his cell.
Cliffs collapse at Hawaii
volcano, stopping firehose flow
HONOLULU A section of sea cliff above a massive
firehose lava flow on Hawaiis Kilauea Volcano has col-
lapsed and splashed into the ocean as tourists and geolo-
gists watched.
A large crack in the section of cliff above the gushing
molten lava stream gave way Thursday afternoon as scien-
tists stood just yards away. Geologists with Hawaii Volcano
Observatory were at the site to monitor the crack when it
collapsed and captured the scene on video .
Later in the day, a tour boat was cruising by when anoth-
er section of the cliff collapsed. Video shows guests gasp-
ing and screaming as the huge piece of land splashes down
in front of them, sending debris high into the air.
The collapse stopped the heavy stream of lava that had
been arching out from near the top of the cliffs for weeks.
The lava stream, dubbed a firehose flow because it shoots
lava outward from the source like water from a hose, had
recently increased in intensity.
The massive Kilauea flow came from a lava tube at the
Kamokuna ocean entry on the southeast side of the Big
Island.
The lava was gushing from a tube that was exposed when
a huge, 26-acre lava rock delta collapsed into the ocean at
the site on New Years Eve. That collapse triggered massive
explosions and giant waves in the area.
Sanctuary cities bill
advances in Texas, despite outcry
AUSTIN, Texas A Texas Senate panel shrugged off 16
hours of sometimes tearful pleas and defiant opposition to
approve a sanctuary cities proposal that would withhold
grant funding from local jurisdictions that dont hand over
immigrants already in custody for possible deportation.
A 7-2 vote around 12:45 a.m. Friday from the chambers
powerful State Affairs Committee sends the bill to the full
Senate, where a vote could come as early as next week.
Hundreds of Texans traveled from all over the state to tes-
tify on the bill and proceedings were repeatedly disrupted
by protesters. Supporters say the measure will impose the
rule of law, but civic groups, immigration lawyers, church
leaders and Hispanic activists oppose it, fearing it will lead
to racial profiling and promote mistrust of law enforcement
among minority communities.
The committee voted along party lines and the hotly con-
tested bill should clear the Senate too, since Republicans
control 20 of its 31 seats.

panic again when soldiers guard-
ing the Louvre Museum shot an attack-
er who lunged at them with two
machetes on Friday and shouted
Allahu Akbar! as the historic land-
mark went into lockdown.
The threat appeared to quickly recede
after the assailant was subdued, but it
cast a new shadow over the city just as
tourism was beginning to rebound
after a string of deadly attacks.
Coming just hours before Paris final-
ized its bid for the 2024 Olympics, it
also renewed questions about security
in the City of Light.
The soldiers quick action put an end
to what French President Francois
Hollande said was no doubt a terror-
ist attack at one of Paris most iconic
tourist attractions.
French prosecutor Francois Molins
said the assailant was believed to be a
29-year-old Egyptian who had been
living in the United Arab Emirates,
though his identity has not yet been
formally confirmed.
Everything shows that the
assailant was very determined,
Molins told a news conference, adding
that the attacker, who was shot four
times, was in a life-threatening condi-
tion in a hospital.

Stock surge as investors hope for regulation cuts

financial companies made big
gains Friday after President
Donald Trump moved to scale
back regulations on the financial
industry. Other stocks also rose as
investors were also pleased that
employers hired workers at a
faster pace in January.
Financial stocks made their
biggest gains since shortly after
the presidential election as Trump
took his first steps to reduce regu-
lations, which could boost profits
for investment firms.
The Labor Department said hir-
ing sped up last month, a positive
sign for the economy. Small-com-
pany stocks, which stand to bene-
fit more than others from stronger
economic growth, make sharp
gains.
Financial companies have made
huge gains since Trumps elec-
tion, and his pledge to cut laws
and rules that govern the industry
is a major reason.
Theyre going to benefit from

month, the Labor Department said Friday .
Thats the biggest gain since September, and
it exceeded last years monthly average of
187,000.
Unemployment ticked up to a still-low 4.8
percent from 4.7 percent in December. But it
rose for an encouraging reason: More
Americans started looking for work last
month.
The unemployment rate counts only those
people who are actually trying to find a job.
All told, more than a half-million Americans
began looking in January, and the vast
majority landed a job.
That suggests the job market could grow
more quickly than expected in the coming
months.

growth, because you have more people out
there looking for work, said Michelle
Meyer, chief U.S. economist at Bank of
America Merrill Lynch.
Investors appeared upbeat about the jobs
report. The Dow Jones industrial average
rose 187 points to lift the index back above

Patriots coach Bill Belichick since he arrived
in New England 17 years ago. And they are 10
words that he leans on whenever he is queried
about whats gone into making his team an
annual threat to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
I do what I think is best for the team, he
says.
For the better part of those 17 seasons, that
approach has worked out well for the
Patriots.
They will make their seventh Super Bowl
appearance under Belichick on Sunday when
they take on the Atlanta Falcons. Along with
quarterback Tom Brady, Belichick already is
part of the winningest coach/quarterback
combination in NFL postseason history, tak-
ing 24 games together.
The 64-year-old coach has done it by hav-
ing an uncanny ability of getting his teams
to buy into a program that has become

Falcons young defense could be key

ATLANTA The popular thinking is the
Atlanta Falcons only path to their first Super
Bowl championship is to win a high-scoring
game against New England.
After all, big offense is the Falcons big
weapon.
The best reason to think Atlanta can beat
Tom Brady and the Patriots, however, may be
the Falcons improved defense.
Atlantas defense was on an upswing even

Atlanta started four rookies and four second-
year players on defense against the Packers.
The unit played with the toughness and speed of

years ago.
The greybeard of the Atlanta defense, 36-
year-old pass-rush specialist Dwight Freeney ,
knows many observers thought the defense
was too young. The lackluster overall statis-
tics, including a No. 27 ranking in scoring
defense, disguise the recent improvement that
made Freeney proud.
We went through issues and problems early
in the year, Freeney said. It was expected
when you have three or four guys that have
never played in the NFL before. We had to catch
these boys up, and the offense was rolling
while these guys were catching up and under-
standing what they need to do. Now those boys
are playing.
Atlanta allowed fewer than 20 points in four
of its last six regular-season games.
The Patriots noticed the turnaround.
New England offensive coordinator Josh
McDaniels said the Atlanta defenses length at

play, youre going to have 11 guys chasing the
guy with the ball. Thats impressive. Thats the
sign of a team that is very well coached. Theres
no question that they are. They hit and tackle
very well.
And the young guys have taken the lead.
Rookie defensive back Brian Poole led the
Falcons with seven tackles and two quarterback
hurries in the win over Green Bay. Two more
rookies, linebacker Deion Jones and safety
Keanu Neal, each had six tackles. Jones and
Neal each had more than 100 tackles this sea-
son to lead the team.
The fourth rookie starter, linebacker
DeVondre Campbell, could play a key role on
Sunday against tight end Martellus Bennett .
Vic Beasley, a second-year linebacker, led the
NFL with 15 1/2 sacks, production that finally
solved the Falcons long-term pass-rush woes.
Brady called Beasleys season incredible
for a second-year player and said Freeney is
one of the greatest pass rushers Ive ever played
against. Hes one of the best defensive players
that Ive ever played against.
I think they cover well, Brady said.
Theyve got a great scheme. They played a lot
of great teams this year. They beat the Packers
twice, beat Seattle pretty good in the playoffs,
won at Oakland. They beat a lot of good
teams.
Still, the Falcons strength is an offense
which hasnt been held under 30 points since a
29-28 loss to Kansas City on Dec. 4.
Atlanta led the NFL in scoring and is the first
team to advance to the Super Bowl by scoring
at least 30 points in each of its last six games
all wins.
While most of Atlantas defensive players are
still establishing themselves, the Falcons
stars are quarterback Matt Ryan, wide receiver
Julio Jones and running backs Devonta
Freeman and Tevin Coleman.
The Atlanta offense is on a roll, but even the
high-scoring Falcons may not be able to
extend the run of 30-point games against New
Englands defense, which allowed the fewest

Baseball owners look to speed up game, again

PALM BEACH, Fla. For those rooting
for baseball to speed up the game,
Commissioner Rob Manfred says: have
patience.
Owners and players ratified a new collec-
tive bargaining agreement in December, but
theyre still negotiating innovations
designed to improve the pace of play.
Owners discussed the issue during two days
of meetings that concluded Friday.
We did review some rule changes largely
related to pace of game that are being dis-
cussed with the players association,
Manfred said. More to follow when those
negotiations are complete.
Manfred has pushed for faster games since
he became commissioner two years ago. But
the average time of a nine-inning game last
season was 3 hours, a 4-minute increase
over 2015. One playoff game took more
than 4 1/2 hours.

of chewing tobacco in their cheek are now a
thing from the past at Busch Stadium.
The St. Louis Board of Aldermen voted Friday
to prohibit the use of smokeless tobacco prod-
ucts like chewing tobacco, dip and snuff at all
sports venues, including Cardinals games at
Busch Stadium. The measure provides no
exemption for players or anyone else on the
field or in the dugouts.
Today, St. Louis is sending a loud and clear
message that baseball players and other athletes

tobacco should no longer be associated with the

passage of the bill.

over backward in what looked like could
have been a gruesome knee injury, she man-
aged to hang onto the ball and pass it out to
Fakava. She missed the putback but the
buzzer sounded, giving the Bearcats a hard-

Cho finished with a double-double, scor-
ing a game-high 15 points to go along with
her 11 rebounds. Shen finished with 11.
San Mateo struggled with its shooting
from the field, connecting on just 13 of 48
shots, but they made up for at the free-throw
line where the Bearcats went 19 for 30.
Dinges said the plan was to go at the
Hillsdale defense with post players Katie
Osaki, Cho and Fakava and the Bearcats did
that all game long. Those three combined
for 31 points. After Shen opened the game

The Bearcats came out firing on cylinders
to start the third quarter, opening the second
half on a 10-0 run to take their biggest lead
of the game, 29-20 with 3:48 left in the

First thing I asked them (in the locker
room at halftime ) was, Do you want to
win? Dinges said. They looked me
straight in the eye and said, Yes.
Again Hillsdale responded, outscoring
the Bearcats 8-3 the rest of the period to
trail by four, 32-28, going into the fourth
quarter.
Hillsdale tied the game at 32 on a Mary
Ellen Paran bucket and again at 37 on a
Vejvoda layup to set up the final frantic
minutes of regulation.

Basketball inches closer to
ending ban on religious headgear
NEW YORK The international group
that governs basketball is close to elimi-
nating a longstanding ban on religious
headgear in competition, clearing the way
for athletes to wear hijabs, turbans and
yarmulkes in international competitions.
FIBA told its playing rules committee at a
recent meeting to create a proposal that out-
lines how headgear can be worn safely dur-
ing games. The goal is to approve the
changes at a meeting in May, the organiza-

tion announced earlier this week.
The move comes following a two-year
study and not long after a letter published
on social media and sent to FIBA president
Horacio Muratore. It called for the end of the
rule, and was signed by a dozen WNBA play-
ers including Breanna Stewart, tennis greats
Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova,
and U. S. Olympic fencer Ibtihaj
Muhammad.
The rule banning religious headgear was
enacted 20 years ago and wasnt meant as a
ban against any religion, and stood without
complaint until recently. Some groups have
interpreted the provisions of the rules on
uniforms as a ban against the participation
of players of certain faiths. According to
FIBA, headgear was banned for safety rea-
sons in case it fell off and someone would
slip on it or become entangled.
Other sports have already relaxed such
regulations.

sued by racing team
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Stewart-Haas Racing
has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against
Natures Bakery, accusing the company of
refusing to pay millions of dollars it owes the
team to sponsor Danica Patrick this season.
Natures Bakery was scheduled to sponsor at
least 20 races this NASCAR season, the sec-
ond year of a three-year deal to be the primary

sponsor for Patrick.
The lawsuit filed Friday in state superior
court indicates Natures Bakery had cash flow
issues not long after signing its sponsorship
agreement and asked to rework the payment
schedule on the more than $15 million the
company owes the team each season. SHR

cocting a scheme to avoid further payments
by claiming Patrick had been endorsing com-
peting products and was not using her social
media presence enough to promote Natures
Bakery.
The suit says Natures Bakery sent a letter to
the team on Jan. 19 terminating the sponsor-
ship agreement, and that the company has
missed several scheduled deadlines to pay.

Then Treanor took over, burying a 3-pointer and going on
to score 11 of HMBs next 14 points as the Cougars
outscored the Grizzlies 21-8 in the quarter. HMB took a 33-
19 lead into halftime and never let Jefferson back into the
game after the break.
I just felt like the energy was kind of low, Treanor said.
I felt like we could have had a bigger lead. So, I just wanted
to break the lead a little more so I took it upon [myself] to
try to get some more scoring for the team.
The Cougars (9-0 in PAL North, 15-6 overall) were nails
on offense, shooting 54.2 percent (26 of 48) from the floor,
including 8 of 19 from 3-point range. While, at times, for-
ward Ryan Yerby has been a one-man show from beyond the
arc this season, the senior hit just one trey in the game, his
only points on the night. But HMB spread the wealth with
four different players dropping 3s, including Tomberlin
knocking down four to total 12 points.
But it was the HMB defense that set the tone, with a furi-
ous man-to-man look through the first eight minutes that
absolutely wore out Jefferson. The Grizzlies converted four
field goals in the opening quarter, including three 3-point-
ers. Any time Jefferson tried to penetrate, HMB collapsed on
them with abandon.
They were putting their hands in the passing lanes and
making sure our guards couldnt get the pass down,
Jefferson center Rodney Lawrence said. But well work on
that when we go to practice and draw up our game plan for
next time.
The Grizzlies (7-2, 13-8) went on to shoot just 32.6 per-
cent from the floor to settle for their second lowest scoring
total of the season. Last Saturday, Jan. 28, Jefferson scored
just 39 points, but in a 39-37 winning effort against
Westmoor to take sole possession of second place in the
PAL North.
[The Cougars] always defend well, Jefferson head coach
John Falabella said. We know that. Theyre a great team.
The tale of the tape saw turnovers loom large in the first
half. Jefferson committed 19 turnovers throughout, includ-
ing 11 in the opening half. Treanor produced two of those
turnovers via back-to-back steals during his second-quarter
run.
Forslund said Treanor is better at driving to the basket
when he slows the game down, but the junior didnt seem to
have any trouble at the end of those two steals, outrunning
pursuing defenders to thunder to the hole.
Sammy has been playing better, Forslund said. If we
can get him just to slow down when he goes to the basket,
because virtually every time he does it he blows up. When he
stops, he makes play after play after play. And thats what
hes got to do.
Jefferson looked to stagger HMBs fluid offense with con-
sistent attempts at the full-court press. Here again, Treanor
proved a weapon. Instead of trying to weave its way through
the full-court press, HMB hardly ever passed its way up the
court at all, instead relying on Treanors smooth ball-hand-
ing ability to simply force the Grizzlies to back off.
Im comfortable, Treanor said. Ive played a lot of
games so I get used to it over time. Youve just got to put
pressure on the pressure and then they have to retreat.
Benjamin tried to work similar magic in the second half,
but the Grizzlies simply couldnt find the cylinder. Benjamin
scored a team-high 13 points and swooped in for a game-
high eight rebounds, including four offensive boards in the
fourth quarter. Jefferson, however, shot just 3 of 16 from the
floor in the final period, including 0 of 6 from 3-point
range.
The kids got a motor, Falabella said. Hes our leader.
As he goes, we go, and hes setting the example of how we
want to play 32 minutes every game. And hes going to play
start to finish and set the example for everyone else to do the
same.
With three games to go in the PAL North regular-season
schedule, HMB now holds a commanding two-game lead
atop the standings. Hence, something catastrophic would
have to happen in the Cougars final three games against
Westmoor, Terra Nova and Oceana to derail their quest for
a three-peat as North champions.
One more win clinches at least co-title for HMB. Two more
wins clinches the championship[ outright.
The Grizzlies are now looking towards the postseason.
Having already clinched a Central Coast Section playoff
berth by virtue of a .500 record in non-league and league
play, Jefferson is still eyeing a run in the context of PAL
play. Even with the North Division title all but out of reach,
the Grizzlies are looking for one more rematch with HMB in
the PAL posteason tournament.
[Tonight] was just a game to get us ready for actual PAL
(playoffs), Lawrence said. We did our best and they
brought their best. But were going to give it to them next
time. Were going to see then at the PAL playoffs for sure.

candidates for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
LaDainian Tomlinson says it. So does Jason Taylor, and
Tony Boselli.
Throw in the rest of the 18 finalists, too.
Humble.
On Saturday night, at the NFL Honors TV show when
the Associated Press will announce its NFL individual award
winners, the nation will learn who comprises the halls
class of 2017. One guarantee: whether
they are in or out, they will be humbled

Dawkins yes, also a member of that all-decade team
are first-year eligibles.
Also on the ballot that a panel of 46 media members and
two former players already in the hall, James Lofton and

kid from a small country town possibly, you know, going
to the Hall of Fame, it chokes me up.

with activities and others, as well as pro-
gramming that does both.
The key is for people to be socially con-
nected, engaged, for there to be some reason
for people to wake up in the morning, he
said. The social engagement was really a
health issue as much as getting therapy and
seeing a doctor.
Michelsons curiosity about strengthen-
ing these connections has fueled the
Sequoia Healthcare Districts role in funding
the 70 Strong initiative, launched this
month in partnership with Peninsula
Family Service, to support older adults in

Gillian M. Christensen, a spokeswoman
for the Department of Homeland Security,
said the agency doesnt comment on pend-
ing litigation. The judges ruling could be
appealed the 9th U. S. Circuit Court of

Federal attorneys had argued that
Congress gave the president authority to
make decisions on national security and
immigrant entry.
The two states won a temporary restrain-
ing order while the court considers the law-
suit, which aims to permanently block
Trumps order. Court challenges have been
filed nationwide from states and advocacy
groups.
In court, Washington Solicitor General
Noah Purcell said the focus of the states
legal challenge was the way the presidents
order targeted Islam.
Trump has called for a ban on Muslims
entering the country, and the travel ban was
an effort to make good on that campaign
promise, Purcell told the judge.
Do you see a distinction between cam-
finding activities that bring meaning to
their older years. The initiative has pro-
duced a free directory website, phone line
and network of social workers who can
make home visits to refer older adults to an
estimated 300 partners providing resources
available to them in their communities.
Theodora Kyle-Singer, a social worker
and the lead community navigator for the
initiative, said she has had several experi-
ences with seniors who arent aware of the
many resources available right around the
corner.
Ive had conversations with people who
didnt know resources were available, but
they were right near them, she said.
For those providing services, having a
better sense of the range of resources pro-
vided is helpful for providing a more com-
prehensive set of resources for seniors, who
may benefit from programs offered through
several partners included in the network.
Kathi Minden, a family services manager
at Peninsula Volunteers, helps connect sen-
iors with recreational activities and group
therapies at facilities such as the Rosener

what he said in New Hampshire in June.
Purcell said there was an overwhelming
amount of evidence to show that the order
was directed at the Muslim religion, which

bench by President George W. Bush, asked
if there had been any terrorist attacks by

The answer is none, Robart said.
Youre here arguing we have to protect
from these individuals from these countries,
and theres no support for that.
Bennett argued that the states cant sue on
behalf of citizens and the states have failed
to show the order is causing irreparable
harm.
Robart disagreed.

seniors about programs and services bene-
fitting them, but will also call them back or
connect with partner care providers to
ensure their clients made it to the programs
or followed through on their plans to seek
services.
There isnt another district locally thats
done this, she said. This program is doing
it right, which means there is proper fol-
low-up.

things you do not see, read one. The only
way to be really despicable is to be con-

clarion documentary I Am Not Your
Negro. It resurrects Baldwins words
his eloquent poetry of injustice with the
same fire with which they were blazed.
Pecks film, which is nominated for best

Negro, director Raoul Peck overlays audio
from a 1960 U.S. Government film The
Land We Love, in which the narrator extols
the virtues of America and the freedoms

1965 Watts Riots. While the juxtaposition
might not be a revolutionary technique to
convey incongruities, in this film it cap-
tures the sum of the essential American
hypocrisy: Black people suffer while the
white people play.
Pecks restraint to build to and save that
gut punch for a moment when hes certain
that plagues millennials. Reason being, the
images but the ideas behind it, is a testa-

Nowadays, almost everything is accessi-
ble through a click of a button or the sound
of ones voice.
If one wants a song to
be played, they just have
to tell Siri to play that
song. If one doesnt
know the definition of a
word, they can save pre-
cious time by just

searching through a
physical dictionary.
Since people are getting more of their
wants instantly through the power of the
people expect other actions and objects to
also become easily accessible. People have
built an expectation for everything to be
instantly gratifying.
Instant gratification is wanting to experi-
ence happiness, fulfillment or some kind of
desire without delay.
Human wants are insatiable. And because
of the rising accessibility to these wants,
they are not only insatiable, but they are
expected to be relieved as quickly as possi-
ble.
Another downside to believing in instant
gratification, especially when using the
internet as a vehicle for it, is that not only
do people expect to obtain their wants
quickly, but also with minimal amounts of
effort.
For example, its a lot faster to go to the
store and buy a ream of binder paper.
However, it takes less effort to order a ream
of binder paper on Amazon because its done
in the comfort of ones home and the wait
time is usually only two days.
At first, it seems like waiting for two days
for the binder paper contradicts the idea of
instant gratification because its not achiev-
ing happiness in the fastest way possible.
However, we are now factoring in effort to

Charles City, Iowa, a community of 7,500
people, holds them as well, all because of
the generosity of a man who remembered
the kindness of his hometown. The story
began 150 years ago. In 1867, when
Charles City was a frontier village of a few
hundred, 8-year-old Arthur Mooney moved
there with his mother and sister. When he
was 12, his mother died and the boy went to
live with a local photographer through
whom he developed a lifelong interest in art
and photography. Mooney eventually left
Charles City to attend art school in
Minneapolis and then moved to New York
City where he worked for the Eastman-
Kodak Company as a photographer. It was
in New York and later in Europe that he col-
lected fine art prints. His acquisitions were
all original, not to be confused with photo-
mechanical reproductions of works of art,
also misleadingly called prints. The
artists represented in what became Arthur
Mooneys exceptional 79-piece collection
included Rembrandt van Rijn, Pablo
Picasso, Grant Wood, Marc Chagall, Paul
Cezanne, James Whistler, Paul Gauguin,
Edouard Manet, Salvador Dali, Thomas Hart
Benton, Jan Van Eyck, Alexander Caulder
and Henri Matisse.
THE DISTANT DAYS AND THE PEO-
PLE WHO WERE SO KIND. Toward the
end of his life, Mooneys thoughts turned to
finding a fitting home for his beloved
prints, as well as his books, manuscripts,
monographs and biographies on art and
artists of the Renaissance. He settled on
Charles City, recalling the distant days and
the people who were so kind in so many
ways. Mooney made his first gift to the
Albrecht Drers 1505 woodcut Adoration of the Magi is among the works on permanent Charles City Public Library in December of may visited by an interactive tour found at

share it with others. Charles City is a mini-
mecca for area artists and culture seekers and
the Art Gallery is a calming balm to many.
We are fortunate to have so many people
from all over, coming to see our exquisite
art collection. People are amazed that this
level of a collection can be seen for free in a
small city in Iowa. Students from area
schools schedule field trips to the Gallery to
see first hand what these incredible artists
have created. It is an excellent introduction
to classic art from the 15th century to the
present. Local young people hear about
Arthur Mooney, a young boy who lived here
in Charles City, and how he became notable
in his career to the point that he was able to
acquire this level of a collection of art. It
also inspires civic pride that someone from
a small town can do well in the big world.

The Comedian a love letter to New York comics

While there are a few good laughs to
be had in The Comedian and great
cameos by myriad comics Taylor
Hackfords film isnt exactly a come-
dy.
Its a portrait of an aging entertain-
er, unfortunately hampered by the tired
trope of a May-December romance and
the implication that men find redemp-
tion in success while women find it in
motherhood. Such outdated elements
detract from an otherwise interesting
character study and heartfelt love letter
to New York City and the camaraderie
among its comedians.
Robert De Niro is Jackie Burke, a
once-famous sitcom star who yearns
for respect as a standup comic. He
resents his fans for associating him
with the character he used to play on
the hit Eddies Home, and he bristles
when they call him Eddie. Jackie isnt
always kind to his long-suffering
manager (Edie Falco, disappointingly
underused) and insults the patrons at
the small-town clubs where he per-
forms.
After tussling with a heckler at one
of his shows, Jackie is sentenced to
jail and community service. Hes
working at a New York City soup
kitchen when he meets Harmony
(Leslie Mann), whos also clocking
community-service hours. She tells
Jackie that she watched Eddies
Home as a kid. It was her dads
favorite show.
Jackie eventually asks Harmony
out, and she tells him straight away
that she wont have sex with him
(handsome as he may be, theres an
obvious 30-year age difference
between them). He takes her to a com-
edy club, and the friendly outing turns
into a quid pro quo: She agrees to be

his date for his nieces wedding if hell
accompany her to a birthday dinner
with her smarmy, overbearing father,
Mac (Harvey Keitel).
The wedding scene which goes on
way too long (do we really need to see
the wedding band perform two songs?)
hints that Jackie may have a tender
heart under his gruff exterior.
But the awkward and ill-conceived
dinner with dad sets Harmony up as a
pawn between the two men: Will she
sleep with Jackie, who declares his
intention to do so directly to her
father, or will she give into Macs
pressure to move back to Florida to
work at the old-age home he owns? Its
gross and trite to have these old guys
competing for the younger womans
affections (especially since one of
them is her dad), and its an odd conun-
drum for a woman in her 40s to be fac-
ing in 2017.
But this isnt Harmonys story, its
Jackies. De Niro was on board early:

says, to bring Baldwin to the forefront.
I read Baldwin as a teenager and his writ-
ing never left me, said Peck. His writing
structured the man I am today and the film-
maker I am today. I wanted to make sure the
next generation had access to Baldwin.
Peck was welcomed by Baldwins estate,
which is managed by Baldwins younger sis-
ter, Gloria Karefa-Smart. But the key to the
film only emerged when Karefa-Smart gave
Peck the pages of Remember This House,
which Baldwin completed 30 pages of
before his death in 1987 at age 63. The
unfinished book was intended to stitch
together reflections on three assassinated
civil rights leaders: Malcolm X, Martin
Luther King Jr. and Medgar Evers.
Remember This House is used as the
prism through which to view the novelist,
essayist and activist. Passages from the
manuscript and other works by Baldwin are
narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. And there is
copious footage of Baldwin speaking and of
his arresting appearances on shows like
The Dick Cavett Show.
But I Am Not Your Negro isnt a time
capsule. Its about today. Peck juxtaposes
Baldwins words with images of police bru-
tality, the Black Lives Matter movement
and other recent events. Other images flick-
er at times John Wayne and Doris Day
that question the white picture of America
promoted by Hollywood.
As he toiled, Peck found his film increas-
ingly timely, a relevance that has only
increased since the election. When the
Ferguson protests grew, he sent a crew to
document it.
I knew how fundamental Baldwins words
were and I knew they were important to
understand the confusion we were in, said
Peck. What I did not expect is that it would
become so obvious and I would have so
many examples and illustrations of what I
was working on.

Aisha Karefa-Smart, Baldwins niece, says
Pecks film, which includes excerpts from
the FBIs extensive file on Baldwin, was
revelatory. It made me understand my fami-
ly more in terms of the hushed tones that
people spoke in and the unspoken fears that
permeated the household.
At festival screenings, she has watched
the film help resurrect her uncle. A lot of
kids are upset they didnt know who he
was, says Karefa-Smart. He was kind of
the background for a while.
That has changed in recent years. Baldwin
is widely taught in universities. The Library
of America has published his essays, novels
and stories with introductions from Toni
Morrison. The James Baldwin Review was
begun in 2015. When Chris Rock spoke at a
Harlem church on Martin Luther King Day
last year, shortly after a second-straight
year of all-white acting nominees to the
Oscars, he read My Dungeon Shook,
Baldwins letter to his nephew.
And perhaps most influential has been
author Ta-Nehisi Coates, whom Morrison
famously called the spiritual heir to
Baldwin. His best-selling Between the
World and Me was modeled on Baldwins
My Dungeon Shook, from The Fire Next
Time.
What many respond to in Baldwin is his
searing directness, his willingness to con-
front the deep-seated ills of America and to
reposition questions of race. The countrys
image of the Negro, which hasnt very much
to do with the Negro, has never failed to
reflect with a kind of frightening accuracy
the state of mind of the country, he wrote in
Nobody Knows My Name.
Peck believes his film is ultimately an
intimate one intended to provoke the kind
of personal inquiry demanded by Baldwin,
who warned against purposeful blindness.
You cannot, whether you are white or
black or Latino or whoever, you cannot
come out of this film an innocent person,
says Peck. You know. You know all you
need to know in order to face it, to react, to
do something or not. As far as Baldwin is
concerned, you have no excuse anymore.
The elements, as he would say, are all on the
table.

I Am Not Your Negro is inspired and
informed by Remember This House, an

through the death of three friends Medgar

Peck uses Baldwins words (read by
Samuel L. Jackson) from Remember This
House and archival footage of various
speeches and interviews to create an urgent
narrative of race in America that encom-
passes past and present. Baldwin was writ-
ing and speaking about his time, his friends
and their moment, but his ideas and truths
transcend the specificity of the 1960s. It
makes sense when Peck fast-forwards to
images of Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin and
Amir Brooks, or headlines about mass
shootings.
History is not the past, its the present,
Jackson says for Baldwin. We are our his-
tory.
Using Baldwins words and ideas as a
guide, Peck seamlessly connects segrega-
tion, civil rights and Black Lives Matter
while also offering a radical and undeniable
indictment of the way in which media can

people get what they want in the easiest way
possible.
Therefore, this idea of thinking is most
commonly cultivated by millennials
because they have experienced more of this
technology-driven society.
According to author Simon Sinek, the
problem with instant gratification and its
effect on millennials can be seen in the
workplace. For example, usually when peo-
ple enter a new company and its one of their
first real jobs they start at an entry level
position. Most people, especially driven,
power-hungry millennials, want to be at the
top. However, they cant seem to grasp that
getting from an entry level position to
some sort of management position doesnt
come instantly and doesnt come without
effort.
Essentially, millennials dont see the hard
work and time it takes to achieve a greater

poison a populace, whether through the dis-
tractions of mindless reality television or
the not-so-subtle othering of black people
in films that made Baldwin feel outside the
system of reality.
I Am Not Your Negro being a film
makes Baldwins criticisms of the medium
even more powerful. We get to see the terri-
fied black janitor being told by police that,
justly or not, he will likely be accused of
raping and murdering a local girl in They
Wont Forget, or a light-skinned girl
(Dorothy Black) getting exposed as
black to her white classmates when her
mother (Louise Beavers) comes to pick her
up from school in John M. Stahls
Imitation of Life.
But perhaps some of the most powerful
moments come just from watching Baldwin
himself so eloquent and perceptive and
so misunderstood by those around him
whether speaking to Dick Cavett on nation-
al television or standing in the front of a
banquet hall. His eyes get wide and large
with urgency as he explains his ideas. His
forehead crinkles when someone else tries
to tell him hes got his own experience
wrong.
Baldwins words, Jacksons reading and
Pecks elegant and scorching composition
will resonate for years to come.
I Am Not Your Negro, a Magnolia
Pictures release, is rated PG-13 by the
Motion Picture Association of America for
disturbing violent images, thematic mate-
rial, language and brief nudity. Running
time: 95 minutes. Four stars out of four.

ing that position in an instant thanks to
technology.
Its almost impossible to not have any
wants and having wants is not bad.
Believing that one can achieve these wants
instantly is where the problem comes in.
Believing that one can achieve these wants
without effort is where the issue needs to be
solved.
Technology, for the most part, makes our
lives easier and helps us perform mundane
tasks. The help should stop there.
Being able to differentiate a simple task
such as looking up the weather and a more
difficult task such as getting a job promo-
tion is crucial in breaking the idea of instant
gratification in all aspects of life.
Even with our vast improvements in tech-
nology, some tasks still need to be per-
formed with old-fashioned human spirit to
achieve the end result.

Laurence Fishburne calls Nelson Mandela role life-changing

NEW YORK There are a handful
of roles that every good actor is more
than honored to play. So when
Laurence Fishburne was asked to por-
tray Nelson Mandela in a new minis-
eries, he didnt hesitate. At first.
I was offered the part. I said yes
immediately, was completely hon-
ored to be asked. And then, 15 min-
utes later, panic set in. I was like,
What are you doing? recalled the
Emmy- and Tony Award-winner.
Fishburne put aside his fears when
he learned hed be filming exclusive-
ly in South Africa with South African
actors helping tell the story Mandela
told in his own autobiographies.
Our storytelling is really about
the man, more so than the myth.
Weve tried to reveal how the man
became the myth, he said. It was a
life-changing experience.

The result is Madiba, a six-hour
film broadcast over three nights on
BET. It takes its title from the clan
name of Mandela, who became one of
the worlds most beloved statesmen.
The star of The Matrix and Man
of Steel has played real people
before Thurgood Marshall and Ike
Turner but Mandela is in a special
class. Theres Christ. Theres
Gandhi, he said, listing options. A
couple of Shakespearian kings and
queens, if you will. Popes. Some
Roman emperors. And perhaps a few
gods, some Olympian gods.
Producer Lance Samuels reached out
to Mandela to get his blessing
almost eight years ago. The only
directive Mandela had was he wanted
the film to explore the less well-
known figures in the anti-apartheid
struggle, like Walter Sisulu and
Oliver Tambo.
The fact that we have the six hours
to work with gives us a much larger

canvas, said Fishburne. We can
introduce people to the audience who
were instrumental not only in bring-
ing apartheid down but also people
who very influential in Nelson
Mandelas life people who helped
to guide him, shape him, counsel
him, oppose him, challenge him.
Orlando Jones, who plays Tambo,
noted that the vast majority of the
cast in Madiba is South African,
plus it marks the first time an
African-American director has helmed
a story about Mandelas life and also
the first time a South African actress
has played Winnie Mandela. South
Africans finally have a voice in this
South African story, said Jones.
Director Kevin Hooks, who direct-
ed Fishburne in Fled, put the actor
at the top of his list when it came to
casting. Hooks knew he made the
right choice while filming Fishburne
in a scene in which the imprisoned
Mandell learns his son has died. Madiba is a six-hour film broadcast over three nights on BET.

everything in Silicon Valley, she
said. There are a lot of community
organizations that have programs that
dont have a home.
Wadycki said she has been in con-
versation with church groups and
libraries looking for space for work-
shops and after-school programming.
She and Hagedorn are hoping to better
utilize the theater and classroom
spaces at its 2120 Broadway location
during the day, when the theaters
schedule is free of rehearsals and
plays.
For Hagedorn, the struggle to find
space is one she remembers well. She
said the theaters productions traveled
all over the Bay Area when it first
started, from conference rooms to
schools and any other available venue.
After seven years of this nomadic
lifestyle, Hagedorn realized the theater
would need a permanent home to
thrive.
I decided I was tired of the shows
living in my car, we really thought it
would be key to have a specific space
that you knew you were going to go,
she said.
Even after Hagedorn settled on a
2, 000-square-foot office space off
Alma Street in downtown Palo Alto,
the path to meet all of the theaters
expenses was a long one. She quickly
learned how to negotiate a path toward
the appropriate tenant improvements
and the budget necessary to operate a
theater as well as its individual produc-
tions.

When Jenny unexpectedly shows up,

accounts whose owners either have
forgotten about them or have died
without anyone else knowing about
them.
He seems to think theres nothing
wrong. She thinks hes a thief, as do
his mother and sister.

A year and a half later, the theater
was out of debt because of Hagedorns
commitment to leveraging the
resources she had, finding creative
ways to use the same costumes and
technical equipment for the wide vari-
ety of stories the theater was telling.
These lessons are ones the theater is
eager to pass along to aspiring theater
performers. Close to half of the the-
aters shows are dedicated to their 2nd
Stages Series, which gives emerging
directors and actors a chance to bring
productions, or their versions of them,
to life. Though the theater supports
the projects with some seed funding,
the guidance the staff provides on con-
cepts like marketing, ticket sales and
fundraising proves powerful for less
experienced playmakers.
Its not something you can learn in
school, how to bring it all together,
said Wadycki.
Wadycki and Hagedorn have created
protocol and benchmarks for all the
aspects of making a production possi-
ble that most never consider. Theyve
worked out everything from how to get
several actresses with wide skirts
through a small door to make an
entrance, to how to fundraise for a pro-
duction and pay actors a fair wage for
their work. They are eager to pass their
knowledge and love of theater onto a
new generation.
We are training the next audience.
We do want them to have an apprecia-
tion for theater and to actually teach
however we can, said Hagedorn.
Though the theater is doing its best
to extend a hand to other groups of
artists and organizations, it is not
immune to the same challenges of
operating in the Bay Area that its part-
ners are facing. With rising rent this
year and overhead costs that wont
budge, the theater will continue to use
creativity to support the shows slated
for 2017, which will feature powerful

ordinary Midwestern, middle class
family, while shes a snob from a
wealthy, old-money family in New
York.
Talking on the phone with someone,
she derides the linoleum floor and the
Corelle dishes. She rejects Lornas
offer of Franzia wine from a box.
Jack isnt any great prize either. Hes
especially unlikable with his loud,
profanity-laced dialogue in the open-
ing scene with Lorna. He remains
hyper through most of the play, but he
cleans up his language.
Champlin and Lo, who portray the
brother and sister, also direct the play.
The partnership works well and has
female roles and casts as well as voices
from marginalized groups.
Hagedorn said all of the actors per-
forming in Dragon Theatre plays live
in the Bay Area, and almost all of them
have day jobs. Scheduling times when
cast members can rehearse is increas-
ingly challenging, with staff members
working long into the night to accom-
modate practices after normal business
hours.
Its getting harder and harder to do
what we do, she said. Being in the
Bay Area, you have to work around
their conflicts. If you cant be an actor
full time and have all your other prior-
ities go out the window when you are
cast in a show, she said.
Hagedorn said the theater receives
about half of its support from ticket
sales and venue rentals, and the other
half from contributions, the majority
of which come from individuals. She is
hoping venue rentals from other
events and community organizations
help with a recent rise in rent, but is
working closely with the theaters
board and advisors to draw more peo-
ple into shows.
But for the team at the Dragon
Theatre, even these obstacles do not
stand in the way of bringing non-tradi-
tional productions to a vibrant com-
munity looking for thought-provok-
ing art.

own lives differently, said Hagedorn.
For Wadycki, the fact that fewer peo-
ple ask her what the Dragon Theatre
does is encouraging. She noted that
more people attend shows and are
reflecting fondly on their own experi-
ences with performing arts.

their childhood and we are giving peo-
ple tools to express themselves.

ends ambiguously, leaving the audi-
ence to try to figure out what Jack will
do. Nevertheless, its time well spent,
especially with the issues it raises and
the laughs it produces.
