14.45 ʹ 15.05 Observer gives a presentation on culture and arts education
15.05 ʹ 15.30 Coffee break
15.45 ʹ 17.50 Drawing together subgroup results in a visual model
17.50 -- 18.50 Joint theme discussion

Group leader suggests to start the day with a walk outside and work while walking. Dividing
group into subgroups would be good since it has worked well as a working method in this group.
Can we get the comments of the last exercise yesterday printed for all group, as the recorder
was writing them down? Yes, these are online, but since asked, the notes from yesterday were
now printed on paper for each group member.
Our presentation yesterday was good, but we are not very innovative. We do have all pieces (the
piece of future, what implications it has for different groups, a concrete case of different
parthways of an individual). These help the case owner to consider what to build for the future.
There are many strong people in the group. Maybe we could try today to be more open to
others͛ ideas. And even if we don͛t like someone, we should appreciate people. To all ideas, let͛s
not say ͚no͛, but ͚yes, and͛.
The group decides to split into three subgroups for half an hour:
- sociology of work, fleshing it out and making more palatable (went for a walk)
- creative professional, artistic creator (went for a walk)
- corporate example (stayed inside)

1st group: creative people who need and want to learn something new
Ani is 35, professional creator who sometimes feels stuck (like we all do!) ʹ and luckily Ani has
access to Aalto Life Factory (ALF), which is:
p  ot a building but a way of life, a way of mobilising resources
p  ot rehab but recharge
p  ot only personal gain but a network gain (society, business)
p  ot bound by old structures but participants can create anything
p not random encounters but meaningful networks (with a few fixed points of
contacts)
Ani in ALF, picture describes different kinds of
relationships
-- a network of cocreation, cases --provided by
different people
-- impressario ʹ mentor
-- a business can start collaboration with small
questions before becoming big customers
--  ot only people who have problems go there,
but any people, who are interested in
something new
-- This is a new way of doing things, but also
revenue models, good for individuals,
-- This model also allows long-term work, when
technologies and tools change, this model can
still apply, the model is about what is wanted to
be done, social media makes it possible, but it is
not about how to utilize certain tools
- Group likes the idea a lot. It is pointed out that they could elaborate forward about the content
provided, support structures, who are the peers etc. This can be elaborated a lot
- It is praised that this model makes all the networks and their importance visible

2nd group (new sociology of work):

This subgroup was about building the context and story for the cases developed. They didn͛t yet
come to ready solutions, but have different suggestions to be discussed with the group. It was
mentioned that Pirjo͛s presentation was very good in putting scientific frame aroung the confusion,
doubts etc. which were confronted in the first days and still sometimes. It was useful get the
reminder of that certain phases are necessary.

Three different types of suggestions:

A: What needs to be presented and how? Set the context, but in a way that makes setting the
stage clear and simple. But not yet sure how.
B: Many of the concepts in the context setting are not new: meaningful learning, networks,
collaboration, but they need to be put in practice ʹ the ACSIbition should ͞V

V Õ For example, write the context description in Chinese, let people experience that that
they need to figure it out. Let them also add something, contribute to the understanding of the
context.
p LLL is about being active, not only listening to information
! If you cannot understand Chinese. you cannot do it alone, need to find and
contact with someone -- you need to understand, network and add to it
p Future is going to be messy, need to show it
p Let people contribute e.g. by leaving video messages.
p In conclusion: Some ͞practice what you preachÕ
C: One of the issues education should provide people is to fulfill their potential. Ask people
͞What do you want out of your lifeÕ. People are creating the society they want to live in.
p Suggestion: Maybe putting the question about ͚what you want in your life͛ in
Chinese in the middle of ALF for people to figure it out?
What is then the sociology of new work? We cannot agree it even between a few people, this
should be shown. We cannot keep going deeper and deeper in definitions which cannot be
agreed͙
We could have a quizz that asks issues about the changing context and implications and
concludes that you have come to a new sociology of life --- if you need help, call ALF!
We had a long list of context, it is now in ALF, but in our personal view. Let͛s write our views and
let the other write their views, through recordings, twitter ʹ the exhibition in the end would be
more than it was in the beginning.

Group 3: Finnish Company (GBG)

! Description: A company in the area of Constructing Engineering (profitable and doing well) with
ambition to grow global currently 80% of revenue in Finland 20% in Middle East
! Objectives: Founders keen on looking for partners in Asia
! Goal: To grow a leadership pipeline as company grows, to send leaders outside Finland
! Business will extend from construction to design, architecture need to work with many joint
venture partners, SMEs and ecosystem of suppliers and customers
! What can the future continuing education partners at Aalto university provide?
p Aalto learning network (AL ), which offers available:
--Database about management
competences, learning resources,
professors and researchers ʹ companies
pay for access to the datapool
(This might give additional motivation for
PhD students, who could get their
research results utilized in this manner)
--Aalto has networks with many other
university partners, which canbe used to
get local information and contacts, to
learn about the cultures from Aalto
partners in local settings
--Relevant professional bodies in Finland
--Human capital consultancy:
Understanding the training needs for the
workforce, working on the interface to
map the learning needs on the learning
opportunities available ʹ understanding
the gaps is difficult
p Professional development recognized by international bodies to enable mobility of the
workforce trained through Aalto
p Joint Venture partners
! Aalto could be providing education for people who in companies go to prepare new places of
work, they would select from their pool of talents to train these people.
An example of rapid prototyping prepared by two group members:

-- Kids learn effectively and fast and are

motivated in informal playing. Example:
the time of basic training in military and
pilots is shorter because nbecause of
games people already have a higher levels
of basic skills
-- Facebook etc groups are forming
informally around common interests.
These could supported through providing
available an educational base with games,
questions (providing authentic learning
tasks) that would be motivating ways to
learn. These could be even provided
through iTunes means, not costing much
for individual but creating revenue for the
provider.
-- There should be recognition of the
learning taking place with the informal
activities with edubase materials
! Úuestion from a group: where are internships for adult learners?

An observer comes in and after 2 minutes makes a suggestion to add content to the rapid
prototyping model that group had developed. She draws a pie of culture and practicing and
educating arts. She emphasizes the aspect of learning by practicing, which was mentioned in the
group model. The intervention session about culture and arts and education by the observer lasts
15-20 minutes

! a group member reflects as learnings from the intervention that arts education is much more
loosely structured than many other sections, people are driven by interest.
! Group brought up roleplays, experiences of using them in teaching.
! GL asks if the observer would help in preparing an excellent presentation for ACSIbition, and
suggests a break.

! It was realized that in both case examples, the answer is a network. Aalto can be formulating the
questions (question provider), and find and create the appropriate network to solve problems
!  ot Aalto learning network, it is Aalto learning sphere, which forms of individuals, companies
and their networks
! The model is not only about providing service but linking people to work with networks
! There are four different levels:
! Individual perspective, networked
! Organisational side, entity is learning,
! Connections between individuals and companies
! Temporal level, issues change over time
During the break, a group member had developed a visual model to reflect the combination of ALF
and AL . The model contains:

--three axes:
individual,
organizations,
networks

--support structures
(organizations)

--cultures (people)

--professions
(people)

--individual senses
used for learning on
horizontal bands

--sphere expands as
network pumps
knowledge into it

--context shapes
the sphere,
sometimes sphere
needs to grow
around some point

    c

! Whom is the ACSIbition for? First the people had thought that it is only for the ACSI people
themselves, and now it starts to look like that maybe also Obama is coming͙
! It is discussed that the last picture (sphere) maybe difficult to understand, but the first ones are
easier and get people engaged and willing to understand more

Intervention by drama person: concentrate on the content now, on Sunday on the presentation ʹ
take more risks. But the discussion stays around the same issues, what to present and how,

! Comment: our network should be learning network, not a structure, but integrate flow, blue
thinking.  etworks don͛t work per se, they need antedecents to achieve self-organisation.
p These go to the levels 4 and 5 in the ACSI model -- we are already almost out of chart,
we have ecosystem but not yet offerings (level 3)
! Are we talking about lifelong learning or lifelong living?
! Understanding the sphere ʹ how individual senses relate to organizations. What else fits to that
system, activities?
! How the global issues would relate to our sphere image?
p the dots are inside the sphere are entities, maybe fast moving particles, they have
attraction with each other when interests coincide, e.g. individual and organization
come together through the network
p paths of the entities inside the sphere are processes

Intervention from the drama person: Is this the deepest you can do? Can you go further, take risks?

! We need to break old structures, values and attitudes and beliefs

p sharing attitude does not necessarily work, people and organizations are not prepared
to it
p it is difficult to change educational systems
p this goes back to the curriculum. What are we trying to educate to people? What
competences are needed?
! We are now very exited with this idea, maybe let it mature for a while and come back to it later.
Let͛s talk about something else now for a moment.
! We don͛t have answers. The ACSIbition will start with questions and end with more questions.
But isn͛t that the model? There are questions and networks help to find answers. Individual
takes ownership of learning and creating answers.

   !
! What would be the key words for our results? Social media people will come soon to shoot a
video for crowdsourcing: What you want to do? What would you like to ask from the world?
! What would be the one sentence that sums up what we are saying ʹ participants throw a ball
and each one suggests a summary sentence:
p We are proposing a future of lifelong learning that consists of networks of support
systems and resources that are easily accessible by individuals and groups at the point
when they need them.
p There is a new sociology of the workforce that is both supported and provided by a
network of global owners.
p In the future we need to provide learning facilities that enable people to be inspired
about what they do.
p We are trying to empower people to learn on their own.
p  ew sociology in work force and the interface between the new sociology, work and LLL
will rescue the world and contribute to the survival of the future society.
p There is a change in the sociology of the jobs and we have tried to make a system which
can help humans with new and already existing tools.
p In the future we have to facilitate learning resources that are supporting individual
lifelong liver.
p The future of the sociology of the work and play and living requires organizations to
adapt to make it more efficient and support society for the general well-being
p The best social change is the change in the people ʹ we are pushing people to changes in
their life (from a metal worker to an artist). Society should make it possible to easily
change the style of your life
p We are trying to create a mechanism that we need to work to find answers to the
problems and challenges we are facing in the work using the problems -- we need to
provide answers but find out how that works best (we are still puzzled ourselves)
p The future learner will need to live learning not in isolation but in packs and draw on all
resources to make it happen.
! comment: this is a vision, not result of our work.
p A new network of explicit resources and support for learners at any stage of their life
p We as group want to bring about a world of facilitated learning networks
p We are trying to create a system by which people can learn more efficiently to serve
their future needs and we are trying to establish a way for them to do it and for the
universities and other organisations to support it efficiently

What is the innovation we are recommending? Are we clear about it?

! Words ͚facilitated network͛ sounds good, concrete words. Facilitation means that you are willing
to open up doors for others, partnerships
! Self-organisation is not in yet. And who tells me where to go? Who lights up my way?
! GM leaves, this has been a great day. It has been fun today!
!  elson summarises and group agrees with this sentence: We are recommending a constantly
changing network of people and organizations who are both learners and facilitators in a new
sociology of work.
p comment: organizations are composed of people!

Intervention by the drama person, steps up as a learner, asking how the model helps her

! How she knows to come to ALF? People are raised in a school of life, there is no official alumni
system, people come in through their connections
p but if I have been 10 years unemployed?
! People come into the space and leave it?  o, they are born into it. But it is important to ensure
that everybody will be participating
p Will Aalto be the structure taking the hand of individuals? It is one of the structures. In
some countries governments are matching individuals with training institutions in case
of unemployment, risk of exclusion etc.
! Discussion about exclusion and inclusion
p there are very many different types of individuals
p there may be many people outside all structures
p maybe excluded people enter through peers, maybe through supporting inclusion
systems and service centers
p Maybe we should think about transition, we are not in the future world with networked
individuals yet ʹ Veronica still useful
! Are we creating anything new? Have we only made a network of successful people visible?
p World of networks, new sociology of work is on networks. In the new sociology
everybody are a part of networks
p  ow we are part of networks already, but which ones are useful? There should be
exchanges through networks. When people make aspects visible, other people in the
network can find it
! If we just think about networked Ani, it does exist. ALF is an innovative organization as it is
described now. Alf can be utilized by different groups. This is a business case and a prototype.
WHAT WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED: We are recommending a constantly changing network of people
and organizations who are both learners and facilitators in a new sociology of work.

WHAT ÚUESTIO  YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK: What advice would you have for others in building
work-related networks for learning?

Ä "#$%#&

'
! They are considering a learner as a traveler on the journey of life, and have been thinking what
can we provide for the travel
! They have several triangle models to describe their understanding and helping to think about
ideas for the customer, what they already have, what could they have now more and enhanced,
what could they have in the future
p for example, it is not only WSOY producing issues but learners themselves are producing
things as well, there is two-way interaction that needs to be taken into account
! the purpose has not been to think points of life when you learn some certain skills, even basic
skills are learned throughout the lifeline

'
1) sociology of the work was the driver: premise of the change
2) new structures are needed to support people to learn and navigate in this world
3) Ani in ALF:unique way of connecting existing and new networks in a way that provides value for all

Comments from group 1:

! cases are good, they have clearly helped to developing the concept
! feeling about sphere: why these axes? aren͛t organizations networks?
p sphere is a good idea, but the role of ALF is unclear in the sphere. What integrates
them?
p Don͛t all the clients get their own sphere which is their support structure and caring
arms? Their experience?
p Is the sphere a safe space for learning? The sphere is not visualization of the experience
but the broader network. Sphere comes from growing organisations and growing
individuals.
p Are the entities in the sphere bouncing around? Tied with connections to other entities
and moving to their direction?
! Maybe the sphere should be left out͙ not agree, although people don͛t understand
immediately it doesn͛t mean it is not a good picture. But it should be clarified, it doesn͛t have a
story yet.
p would it be better described as a bowl?
! What is the difference with this idea and normal upskilling?
p People do not come only for training but also because they are interested in see what
they could learn or do, try out different options
p could the system follow your, check your information, suggest options proactively?
p how the learning is recognized? Through networking Aalto is recognized as a valuable
learning space.
