Lesson Topic: Nervous System Part 1: Action Potentials & Neurons

Time Allotted: 70 minutes

Overall & Specific Expectations:

E2. Investigate the feedback mechanisms that maintain homeostasis in living organisms.

E3. Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of human body systems, and
explain the mechanisms that enable the body to maintain homeostasis.

E2.1 Use appropriate terminology related to homeostasis.

E3.1 Describe the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine, excretory, and nervous systems,
and explain how these systems interact to maintain homeostasis.

Lesson Body:
Students will review concepts from the previous days lesson.
Review 1. What is homeostasis?
(5 minutes) 2. What is a feedback loop?
3. What are the elements of a feedback loop?
Students will complete a short note about the basic anatomy and
Direct Instruction/
structure of a neuron and are introduced to action potentials.
Simulation
Students will simulate an action potential via an in-class
(15 minutes)
demonstration.
Students will also watch a video about neurons and action potentials.
Students will also build a neuron using construction materials, and
labeling the parts and describe each component.
Assessment o Dendrites, soma, nucleus, axon, axon hillock, myelin,
Building a Neuron synaptic terminal
(50 minutes) Students will also order the stages of an action potential via a short
worksheet.

Consolidation (5 minutes):
Students will complete an exit card that pertains to what was learned in this lesson (see
appendix).
Reflection of Lesson (to be completed afterwards):
