Emission of gases from the ammonia industry is minimized by recycling unreacted nitrogen and

hydrogen.
A large amount of ammonia emitted however does not come from haber process itself but from
various industries which uses ammonia, for example the fertilzer and the agriculture industries.
These industries uses a ammonia on a large scale to increase food production. This results in large
quantities of ammonia and nitrogenous compounds emitted into the environment.

Exposure to ammonia:
-At low concentration, it may cause severe irritations
-At high concentrations, it may be fatal.

Ammonium and nitrate fertilizers are water soluble, hence when applied they are easily washed off
into waterways. This may lead to eutrophication. This inturns will cause a overgrowth of algae
because of excess nutrients , preventing sunlight and oxygen from will be reaching under water .
This results in death of fishes and other aquatic mammals which breathe aerobically.

Since ground water and surface water are used as sources of domestic water supply, fertilizers can pollute
drrnking water. Too much nitrates in drinking water can be poisonous to infants. This is because
the nitrates are converted to nitries in infacts and combines with haemoglobin more readily than
oxygen, this will therefore starve the body of oxygen. This condition is known as
methaemoglobinaemia.
