Description Global System for Mobile Communication. Originally developed as a pan-European
standard for digital mobile telephony, GSM has become the world’s most widely used
mobile system.

Operations Administration and Maintenance: A group of network management

functions that provide network fault indication, performance information, and data and
diagnosis functions.

The aim of Configuration Management is to manage the network resources through

Managed Objects. A managed object may represent a physical entity, a network
service, or an abstraction of a resource that exists independently of its use in
management. The resources are managed by the standard functionalities.

The aim of the Performance management module is to collect the performance

measurement data across a BSS and send it to the OMC-R. The data provide
information in order to support the following areas of performance evaluation: Traffic
level, Verification of the network Configuration, Quality of Service and resource
availability.

In network management, Fault Management is the set of functions that detect, isolate,
and correct malfunctions in a telecommunications network, maintaining and
examining error logs, accepting and acting on error detection notifications, tracing and
identifying faults, carrying out sequences of diagnostics tests, correcting faults,
reporting error conditions, and localizing and tracing faults by examining and
manipulating database information.

GSM applications that need to access the data (configuration data / files) from
DAS/FAS use the services of CMLA. CMLA is responsible for opening a transaction
with DAS/FAS for the particular application. CMLA will manage the connections with

the DAS/FAS for all the applications; those have opened the session with DAS/FAS.

AUDIT and Mediation Functions

• Developing of test cases to cover events in the managed objects
• Developing Regression scripts to automate the testing process

As a member of Performance Management team, I was involved in :

• Quality and Coverage activity which involved in improving the quality of the
software and writing test cases for testing more paths in the source code

• The counter validation activity which involved in having a mechanism to check

the correctness of the software in updating the counter values for the occurrence
of events.

• Aging activity which involved in checking the behavior of the module under
maximum load. All the possible cells and their neighboring cells were created and
counter updating was successfully verified.

• Development of Snapshot feature which helped to display the state of PM

context (which stores the complete information about the module). This will come
handy in analyzing problem and finding the solution quickly. The activity was
carried out at customer site at Nortel Networks, Paris.

• Regression tool development activity involved in automating the testing for the
software.

As a member of Fault Management, I was involved in:
