Course Description:

The Grade 9 Literary Units are designed using text from the core anthology,
The Language of Literature/ Collections and other literary and informational
sources. A large portion of the work is devoted to reading, rereading,
discussing, and writing about the selections in order to develop responses
to the units overarching questions. Throughout the units, students will
read, talk about, write about, and write like the text, while keeping a
Reader/Writer Notebook to capture their work. Each unit concludes with a
culminating assessment.

Quarter 1 Active/Strategic & Close Reading and Arguments &
Methods
Quarter 2 Poetry Study and Narrative Study: Responding to
Challenge (Part 1)
Quarter 3 Narrative Study: Responding to Challenge (Part 2) and
Novel and Extended Study: To Kill a Mockingbird (TKM) Part 1
Quarter 4 Novel and Extended Study: To Kill a Mockingbird (TKM)
Part 2 and Drama: The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet

Required Materials:

Student ID, visibly worn


Reader/Writer notebook(composition, spiral, or dedicated section of binder)
Looseleaf paper
Pens/pencils

Important Policies:

Expectations:
1 Wear your ID at all times(no entry to class without ID).
2 Be on time.
3 Attend every class unless you are ill or have another allowable
excuse.
4 Be attentive-no sleeping or resting your head on your desk.
5 Bring all necessary supplies every day.
6 Only water is allowed. No other food or drink.
7 Use of electronics for academic purposes only.

Attendance/Tardy Policy:
You are responsible for missed assignments, even if your absence is excused.
Tardy students will be sent to hall sweep and will not be allowed to make up
work that is missed while you are out of class.
Consequences for Not Following Class Rules and Expectations (including tardiness):
1st infraction: verbal warning.
2nd infraction: Loss of positive points
3rd infraction: phone call or e-mail home

Electronics Policy:
Electronic devices(Cell phones, laptops, tablets, ipods, etc) may only be used
for academic purposes. Positive points will be awarded to students
adhering to the policy. Positive points will accumulate throughout each
quarter and will be applied to extra credit.

These may include research papers, presentations based on
researched material, and classroom/outside reading projects.

Grading Policy:
100-90=A
89-80=B
79-70=C
69-60=D
59-below=E
