TITLE: Regional Factors affecting the Economic growth of Maharashtra State: 1960-
2016
In India there has been a significant amount of development since its independence in
1947, however, It isnt the case that all the plans have been executed perfectly and the
desired results obtained. So, I would like to consider a state in India, Maharashtra.
Since the formation of Maharashtra in 1960 by combining Western Maharashtra,
Vidarbha and Marathwada, the understanding and assurance given to Vidarbha and
Marathwada was of equitable economic development and opportunities allocations in
proportion to the regional population. In the process of growth in Maharashtra some
regions have developed faster than others and those regions which have developed at
a lower rate, have been lagging behind in many economic sectors. Regionally unequal
growth has led to serious regional imbalances, so much so that, the regions like
Vidarbha has led to the demand of for separate State. It is in this context, the main aim
of this project is to study the emerging regional imbalances in the State of Maharashtra.
The Maharashtra State was formed in 1960, therefore the study will cover from 1960 to
2016. I intend to study the following aspects:
1) Examine the changes in the in-State Income by regions.
2) Examine the regional patterns in the of sectorial growth i.e.
Agriculture, Industry and Tertiary sector and sub sectors in each of the these sectors.
3) Examine the growth in physical infrastructure, including the financial infrastructure,
with focus on irrigation, elasticity, Banking and roads.
4) Examine the growth in education, health, drinking water and other amenities.
5) Examine the selected outcome indicators like poverty, malnutrition.
6) Analyze and identify the causes of regional imbalances in terms of Government and
private Investment.
7) Study the political Economy of regional imbalances.
8) Suggest the policy framework for balances in regional development.
With the data collected, I intend to create an economic model based on the existing
data that we have already studied and come up with policies that could aid the
development of Maharashtra. With this I intend to create a model that will help
Maharashtras economic growth and also serve as an example for other states of the
country.
