1.0 Introduction
The measurement of the flow behavior of oil when subjected to different temperatures is
carried out using ASTM D 97. (Standard Test Method for Pour Point of Petroleum
Products).
When manually determining the pour point, an oil sample is poured into a test glass which
is heated to 45C and then cooled down in several successive steps in the cooling bath.
When the test temperature is 9K above the anticipated pour point, the test glass containing
the sample is taken from the cooling bath and any condensating moisture is wiped away
with a clean towel, while, at the same time, the glass is held at an angle. Should, at any
time, there be motion on the surface, the test glass is returned to the cooling bath for
continued cooling. This total process must be carried out with great care and should be
concluded within 3 seconds. After every successive cooling up to 3K this particular
procedure should be repeated until the test glass can be held for 5 seconds in a horizontal
position without setting the oil in motion. Consequently, the results of these manually
determined pour points are influenced by thermal antecedents, as well as prior mechanical
treatment and flow point reformers within the sample itself. Hence, the test results in many
cases may turn out to be extremely inaccurate.
With the Herzog Automatic Pour Point Analyzer Unit HCP 852, all test samples are treated
as if they were analyzed manually in accordance with the ASTM D97 standard method.
The HCP 852 features a robotic lever which handles the removal, tilting and replacing of
the sample back to the cooling bath. While doing so, the test sample surface is carefully
monitored by video camera in order to detect any motion. Should the camera recognize
motion, the lifting and tilting modes will be terminated and the standard test glass will be
returned into the cooling bath. In the process the surface of the sample is subjected to video
camera scrutiny for any detection of motion. In the event that the camera detects motion,
the lifting and tilting process is interrupted which will cause the standard test glass to be
returned into the cooling bath. At the moment the test glass is held five seconds at a 90
angle without causing the slightest motion to occur at the samples surface, the
corresponding temperature is recorded and that temperature helps to determine the pour
point (3K will be added to the temperature as measured so that the result can be listed as a
final pour point).
The motion detected on the surface of the sample is not uniform in every case. A manually
conducted pour point determination which the laboratory technician observes scans the
entire sample surface for possible motion to occur. A determination via automatic
Analyzer equipment, this observation is carried out with a video camera. In comparison to
other Analyzer equipment utilizing a single beam of light and a photoelectric cell detector,
this clearly provides for solid improvement throughout.
As there are temperature ranges that can be shortened, detection by the HCP 852 in which
the samples are tilted achieves a better solubility by far than the Standard Method (3K
Solubility) is able to deliver. Testing of this method has shown that even solubilities down
V5.1D Introduction 7
Automatic Pour Point- and Cloud Point-analyzer HCP852 Combi
to 0.5K were made possible. Deviations from temperature ranges common with the
Standard Method (3K Solubility) are only possible where user-defined programs determine
them (see Chapter 8.3 and 8.10).
The method to determine a Cloud Point is likewise based upon visual examination of the
sample. As the HCP 852 is equipped with all electronic and mechanical requirements, it is
reasonable to suggest that this equipment could likewise be used to measure the Cloud
Point.
Pursuant to ASTM D 2500, the sample is brought to a temperature of 14K above the
anticipated Cloud Point and then its cooled down in several subsequent cycles within the
cooling bath. During the cool down process by graduations of 1K, the sample is hoisted
from the cooling bath, and after testing for cloudiness, is again lowered into the cooling
bath.
In case no cloudiness is detected at any of the respective fixed test steps, the sample is
subjected to switching to the next lower cooling stage (for instance: at a sample
temperature of 10C, the cooling bath is switched from 0C to -17C).
As the sample becomes cloudy, it will still be subject to cooling by about two to three
degrees Kelvin, based upon determinable technical reasons, until the result can be
confirmed. As the equipment enables the laboratory technician to view the sample during
hoisting, a visual screening of the result is made possible.
The result is shown with an accuracy of 1K. Complementary there is shown a second result
(H-CP). The H-CP shows the result with a higher accuracy.

Attention: When the instrument is connected to the cooling system, do not close the shut
off valves of the supply pipe and the return pipe from the test unit to the main
cooling system. Otherwise, while warming up there might be an overpressure
that will damage the cooling bath in the instrument.
The ASTM D97 is an empirical standard method in order to properly determine the Pour
Point. Therefore, it is extremely important that the standard programs of the HCP 852
Analyzer Unit reflect as closely as possible any of the manually derived Standard Methods.
The standard programs shall cover the systems theory standpoint, as well as the ensuing
process itself.
The HCP 852 Pour Point Analyzer Unit is a totally closed-loop system. For cooling
materials to be sampled in a test flask, an independent cooling system is required.
Basic equipment for the Analyzer Unit includes a sample cooling bath, electronic
components, as well as an indicator unit.
The upper section of said system consists of a mechanical unit equipped to hoist, and
thereby remove, the test glass from the cooling bath and tilt it to a maximum of about 90
(measuring head), plus a stationary video camera. Furthermore, it includes two stepping
motors and the electronic circuitry required to function as a motor controlling device.
Immediately beneath the video camera mount a special clamping device is installed for
positioning the testing flask. To determine the sample temperature, a Resistance
Thermometer (PT-100) is placed within the test glass proper.
A spare parts listing for the HCP 852 and accessories are located in Chapter 0, which also
includes all corresponding parts numbers.

CAUTION:
SWITCH ON YOUR HCP 852 AFTER MAKING SURE THAT ALL RETAINING
CLIPS USED DURING TRANSPORTATION ARE REMOVED!
For the purpose of safe transportation, your HCP 852 Analyzer has two retaining angle
brackets. These devices must be removed prior to initiating the Start Up procedures for
this equipment.
1. Remove the two screws on the top of the protective cover of the vertical unit.
2. Take off the protective cover.
3. Remove the transport safety angles from the two carriages with an allen wrench.
4. Replace the protective cover.
Suggestion: Save the retaining clips and safety screws in case your HCP 852 has to
be moved again in the future.
Suitable Location:
Place the HCP 852 Analyzer on top of a heavy-duty lab table and keep out of the
sunlight; sunlight can severely hamper motion detection by the sensitive optics of the
video camera system.
Cooling:
Proper cooling of the test material requires an independently-dedicated refrigeration
system Hence, the refrigeration temperature must be responsive to a temperature setting
which needs to be at least 10C under the lowest required cooling bath range of the
HCP 852. If, for instance, a required cooling range of -51C is to be used, the cooling
system, in turn, would be adjusted to a minimum of -61C; lower than that would be
even better. A normal case requires the adjustment of the refrigeration system be at the
lowest temperature. The cooling system hoses will in all cases be connected to the
respective connectors, such as cooling in/out located on the back-side of the HCP 852
Unit.
Caution:
During initial start up procedure after connection to the cooling system, it is strongly
recommended that the coolant liquid level on the refrigerating machine is routinely
checked!
Power Supply:
Caution: Remove plug from receptacle prior to switching to the rated voltage!
The HCP-852 can run on 230 V or 115 V alternating current. The voltage required is
selected at the power box on the back of the instrument. Pry the box cover up with a
screwdriver and set the switch to 230 V or to 115 V. The fuses are behind the arrows
below the switch. Please insert the fuses to match the line voltage selected (see
Drawing PP 3). Then close the cover again and connect the HCP-852 to the power line.
A printer can be connected to the Pour Point system to print the measurements. A
standard printer with a parallel printer connection and the expanded IBM character set
can be used. Use Cable No. 626-029 to connect the printer to the parallel interface on
the back of the HCP-852. (The Centronics cables usually used for PC do not fit the
HCP-852 printer connection.)
If several test instruments (up to 16 HCP-852s) are to be connected to one printer, they
are connected using the supplied cable 626-082 to the HTR connector (on the back of
the test instrument).
Printer
Be sure that the printer is connected to the master test instrument and that the other
instruments are set to be slaves.
Also, each instrument must have a different instrument number (instrument numbers
0-15).

Comment:
If an instrument is to be changed from Master to Slave (or the reverse) the
jumper must also be changed appropriately. To work as a Master the 3 jumpers
must connect the WP1 pegs. To work as a Slave they must connect the WP2 pegs.
Make sure that only one of the networked instruments is coded as a Master.
The motors used for the removal and tilting actions of the test glass are stepping motors.
Each of these motors is driven by a micro-controller. Zero adjustment of the sensor is
accomplished during manufacturing, and is to be repeated only in case of mechanical
changes involving the linear unit component (for instance: repair) or in the event of a
loss affecting all zero adjustments (i.e., checksum errors in Master. For details
pertaining to zero adjustment, refer to Chapter 11.15).
6.0 Operation
6.1 General
Before turning the HCP-852 on, the line voltage, frequency, and power consumption
must be compared with the values on the line connection and set there if necessary (see
also Chapter 5.1). Then the power cable is plugged in and the instrument is turned on
with the power switch on the front.
The front of the instrument has a two-line display, a numerical key field, various
function keys, and a display of the selected menus and programs with indicator lights.

7.1 General
For proper determination of a Pour Point Analysis, it is mandatory that the taller
test glasses without the reflective base be used ! Otherwise, the test material might
be poured down the measuring sensor as the vessel tilts!
As the HCP 852 is actuated, the display will show the model no. of the appliance and
the software version pertaining to the selected Master Program. Immediately following,
a status message Ready appears along with the last entered test number.
Ready 1
Using the key, a particular submenu can be called up which enables the user to
obtain the previous (last) result, as well as have access to the Print and Data
Transfer functions (see Chapter 7.9 for the Pour Point and Chapter 8.9 for the Cloud
Point).
Using the START key, the next page will appear.
CAUTION: This causes the measuring sensor component to move to the uppermost
position.
It is now essential that the filled test glass, containing the test prepared in accordance
with the ASTM code, be fitted into the glassholder. After placing the test glass in its
holder, Do Not exert additional pressure upon the adjustment lever of the glassholder
because such action could easily break the vessel.
At this point alphanumeric characters may be entered. Numbers are entered directly,
letters and special characters via the or keys while scrolling forward or backward
through the alphabet. Such possible characters are either 0..9, letters A..Z, or
special characters such as [,] and \.
As numbers are entered, the cursor within the display window will move automatically;
other entries require the key be used for information movement. To change
characters, the cursor, in conjunction with the corresponding key, is guided to the
desired position, so as to overwrite with a new character. If a character needs to be
erased, just overwrite using a period [.].
Using the START key, advance to the next page.
Four programs with different parameters can be stored in the HCP-852. One of these
programs is selected by entering the program number (1, 2, 3, or 4) on this page of the
display. We recommend making the standard Pour Point program number 1, the
standard Cloud Point program number 3.
Program 0 specifies the parameters with which the last test was started.
Furthermore, there will be an indication whether the program had been utilized for
determination of measurements for Pour Point or Cloud Point. (see Chapter 9.3).

However, this particular page also carries a submenu which can be accessed using the
key. This submenu allows for changes to be made for preheat and test-start up
temperatures (see Chapter 7.10).
Caution: When pressing the STOP key, all changes made within the submenu will
be lost permanently; all values will revert to parameters stored by the selected program.
When pressing the START key, the page will advance to Expected Pour Point.
As an expected Pour Point is entered, the system automatically determines the correct
value of the parameter Start before expected result. This is added to the Pour Point
and thus reveals the test-start temperature. According to the standard Parameters, the
added value equals 9 K.
If no expected Pour Point is entered, the procedure will start with the hoisting and tilting
modes of the test sample in accordance with a pre-determined value parameter known
as the test-start temperature (see Chapter 9.11).
When pressing the START key, the page changes and displays Start Test?.
Start Test?
Testing does not begin immediately. Press the STOP -key if you need to interrupt the
starting sequence. By pressing the STOP -key, the HCP 852 will return to the page that
signals Ready.
Caution: Pressing the STOP key will cause deletion of all changes made within the
submenu and return to the values of parameters entered in the selected
program. This will also delete all entered values pertaining to the expected
Pour Point.
After having started the test, the sample will be inserted into the cooling bath. Shortly
thereafter, a status message cooling or heating appears, depending primarily on the
preheat temperature previously entered into the respective parameters.

Initially, the sample in the test glass is heated to the pre-determined temperature. When
it reaches it, the cooling phase is set in motion.
The sample temperature is measured during the cooling cycle. In conjunction with the
ASTM Standard Measuring Method, a total of 7 steps of pre-programmed temperature
regulations will take place within the cooling bath. The cooling bath temperature will be
gradually lowered. The HCP 852 also allows programming of customized temperature
parameters, such as:
At a 90 -tilting angle the sensitivity factor for video detection increases. With no
surface motion detected within a 5 second period of time, Pour Point calculation is
based upon the sample temperature. The temperature range is added and the subsequent
total result is the established Pour Point.
After establishing the Pour Point, the sample is heated to a previously established final
temperature level (see Chapter 8.9). As this particular temperature is reached, the test
vessel is hoisted out of the cooling bath and a buzzer sounds. On pressing the STOP
key, the buzzer turns off.
In accordance with ASTM Standard Method D97, the sample material must be observed
at temperature ranges of 3K. This implies that the temperature solubility for Pour Point
determination lies at 3K. In order to achieve higher temperature solubility a series of
smaller temperature ranges may be programmed (see Chapter 8.12). This could result in
deviations to the values established by ASTM D97. Such deviations could be attributed
to intensified motions of the sample during hoisting and tilt which, subsequently,
appears to change the kinetics caused by crystallization of paraffins. This, in turn, could
lead to varying Pour Point results.
Unit HCP 852 was developed so as to obtain a refined temperature solubility state,
without deviating from ASTM D97-type testing. Herzog calls this value the Last
Floating Point (LFP). The HCP 852 calculates the LFP via numeric analysis based on a
previous motion occurrence on the test surface (i.e., size and velocity of the ripples
caused by the sample during hoisting and tilting of the sample). The LFP is delivered
automatically by the HCP 852, along with a solubility of 0.1K.
Upon completion of analysis with the HCP 852, the LFP is displayed by pressing the
-key.
As the HCP 852 attains the status mode Ready, a submenu is visible which displays
the LFP and from where the printing, as well as data transfer, functions can be executed.
It is also possible to again display the results obtained from the last Pour Point analysis
again. Pressing the key changes into this submenu. If there is an error message, it
will be shown on the first display page of said submenu, along with the termination
temperature of the test. If there is still a test result to be determined, such result will then

the above, however, these temperatures may be changed, the cooling module may be
linear, or cooling may take place adhering to a constant differential.
Hoisting of the sample takes place based on pre-determined temperatures and at pre-set
temperature ranges. If the video camera shows no definite sample turbidity, the test
glass returns to the cooling module and the cooling process continues.
After establishing the Cloud Point the sample is heated to a previously established final
temperature level (see Chapter 9.9). When this particular temperature is reached, the test
vessel is hoisted out of the cooling module and a buzzer sounds. By pressing the STOP
-key the buzzer is turned off.
Pursuant with the ASTM Standard Method D 2500, the sample material must be
observed during temperature ranges of 1K. This implies that the temperature solubility
for a Cloud Point determination lies at 1K. Internal calculations obtained from
measuring data of the Cloud Point, however, will be determined more precisely to 0.2K.
In order to achieve a still higher temperature solubility, even smaller temperature ranges
can be programmed (see Chapter 9.12). This may lead to deviations from the values
determined per ASTM D 2500.
When the HCP 852 attains the status mode, Ready, a submenu is accessible which
displays the last determined result and where printing and data transfer functions can be
executed. By pressing the -key, this particular submenu changes. If there is an
Error message, it will be shown on the first display page of said submenu, along with
the termination temperature of the test. If there is still a test result to be determined,
such result will then be displayed within the submenu.

available page of the submenu appears.

9.1 General
The HCP 852 also offers additional possibilities to the user, allowing Pour Point or
Cloud Point analyses to be carried out which deviate from Standard Procedures; for
example, using a different cooling bath, control cycle or changed test range. There are
four variable programs (Programs 1 through 4) from which to choose. It is completely
up to the user which program is used to determine either the Pour Point or Cloud Point
analysis. Program 0 contains all the parameters which started the last test cycle.
Program 0 cannot be changed.
Please note: When a test run is in progress, parameter input is blocked and only display
is allowed. The STOP -key to interrupt testing or to silence the buzzer is not active in
this particular menu.
In order to either view or change the currently active parameter, it is the Menu M -
key that switches into the parameter menu.
9.2 Password
If password protection is required, the first page shown when changing into the
parameter menu is the password-input page. The characters entered will be displayed as
#.
Parameter
Password ########
Then the key is used to switch to the first parameter. If an incorrect password is
entered, there is a sound signal and the entry is erased. If no entry is made, the display
also switches to the first parameter, but no parameters can be changed.
At this point in time, programs 0 through 4, whichever is viewed or selected for change,
may now be selected. Program 0 contains all the parameters which started the last test
cycle. These parameters cannot be changed and therefore can only be viewed. However,
in programs 1 through 4, all parameters can be changed as necessary.
For both the Pour Point and Cloud Point procedures all standard parameters are pre-
programmed. If no changes are made, the message Standard appears on the display
screen. When changes are made to a parameter, the message non-standard appears on
this page. To re-enter standard values, the -key is used. The display will then change
to indicate Standard.
The term Standard does not imply that the parameters are in compliance with various
standard industrial norms, but indicates whether or not the built-in parameters of the
manufacturer were used.
Changes between the Cloud Point and the Pour Point procedure must be done by
pressing the -key. In so doing, no changes occur to the parameters. If, for instance,
we switch from CP to PP, we will change the test procedure, however, the CP
parameters will still remain active. In other words, we would still run a Pour Point
analysis using previous Cloud Point parameters. Consequently, these parameters are
switched by pressing the -key to Standard, and if necessary, tailoring them to
individual testing requirements.
The respective procedure will be sequentially displayed by showing the abbreviations
PP (Pour Point) or CP (Cloud Point).

It can happen that the sample temperature displayed diverges slightly from the actual
temperature. This divergence can be corrected with an offset. The offset is entered on
this page. The sign for the value is selected with the and keys.
Example: The sample temperature is established in a bath at exactly 0C; but the
display shows +0.2C. An offset of -0.2 K must be entered to correct this
deviation.
-0.0 K
The procedure here is like that in Section 7.7. In this case, though, the bath is filled
with alcohol and the calibration thermometer hangs in the bath (see also Section 12.4).
Note: the offset applies only for the program selected.
Offset Bathtemp.
+0.0 K
Note:
There is a drain for condensed water on the bottom of the cooling bath. This drain must
first be closed on the bottom of the instrument.
In order to properly elevate the selected starting temperature, a preheat temperature can
be entered.
Preheat temperature
+45.0 C
At the end of testing, the sample will be heated to the test-end temperature. This will
prevent freezing of the cooling bath and enable the test vessel, as well as the
thermometer, to be easily cleaned.
Pursuant to ASTM Method D 97, the sample must be hoisted and tilted for the first time
when its temperature is 9C above the expected Pour Point. If yes is the selected
option, the expected Pour Point may be entered as the start-up sequence is initiated (see
Chapter 6.4). If the selection points to option no the question for the expected Pour
Point will not be asked in the start sequence. Tilting begins with the sample temperature
determined during the test-start temperature cycle (see Chapter 9.11).
Test-start up for the Pour Point procedure is determined at 9K prior to the expected
result, whereas, for the Cloud Point, it is 14K. The temperature clearance may be
changed at this time.
+9.0 K
If at the start of a test no expected Pour Point or Cloud Point has been entered, then the
first testing cycle of the sample is entered when it reaches the sample temperature,
indicated below.
+20.0 C
Normally, during the Pour Point procedure, the sample is hoisted from the cooling bath
for testing at a temperature clearance of 3K; during the Cloud Point procedure it is at a
temperature clearance of 1K. The former clearances may be changed as necessary.
(Please note: For the Cloud Point it remains at 1K!)

12.0 Messages
This menu lists the failure messages. When a test is started all the previous messages are
deleted.
We distinguish basically among four types of messages.
Messages with no effect on the course of the test
Messages with which the test is terminated
Messages with which the test cannot be restarted unless the instrument is first
turned off.
Messages regarding checksum errors. Any such error messages automatically use
standard parameters within the appropriate program. Furthermore, appropriate program
parameters must be reviewed and the zero point of the measuring sensor should be
checked.
Comment: If failure messages occur, first make sure there is no operator error.
Communications errors between master and slave can occur in the instrument
due to external disturbances, which crash the program. If this failure has
occurred due to such a disturbance it can be eliminated by RESET (turn the
instrument off and on again).

Please note: The HCP 852 is a very complex measuring unit. In case you encounter
major technical problems, especially those that are hard to solve,
please contact your local customer service engineer.
14.1 General
Sample glasses:
The bottom portion of the shortened sample glass required for the Cloud Point
determination is covered with a layer of lacquer which is insensitive against various
detergents such as cleaning fluid. Not used, however, should be very aggressive
solvents, as for example acetone which will positively dissolve the layer of lacquer in
no time at all.
Analysis appliance:
Testing of the HCP 852 regarding its orderly functions can easily be achieved through
regular comparison with results obtained by this appliance with equal laboratory results,
or by regular analysis of test samples whose particular Pour Point is well known. For
repairs and general maintenance purposes appropriate materials may be ordered from
Herzog company. In case of any disorderly functioning of the unit the diagnostics and
error message programs can be of great assistance as well.
A) A stop watch equipped with a graduation of scale of 0.1 s and a degree of accuracy
equal to +/- 0,07 %.
C) Resistance bridge and a decade box (accuracy of +/- 0.05 Ohm); those items may
be ordered from Walter Herzog GmbH.
Temperature measurements may be checked out with the help of a decade box in
conjunction with the Resistance / Temperature table from DIN EN 60751. The decade
box is to be connected with the input-connectors of the thermometer, and thus the
temperature values of the instrument are to be compared with the appropriate resistance
values shown in the table. The required accuracy limit to be adhered to must be 0.02
C or 0.05 Ohm, respectively.
The cooling bath as well as sample temperature readings are obtainable from the
diagnostics test.
Attention: The cooling bath and sample temperature offset is only effective within
the program to which it had been entered. Whereas, the diagnostics test
the sample and cooling bath temperature will be duly corrected by the
offset, whose retained value is being stored in the program, when last
started.
For calibrating the resistance thermometer PT 100 attached to the cooling bath wall you
may proceed as follows:
During a continuous test cycle youll want to check out, with a stop watch in-hand, the
optical cooling as well as tilting procedures.
During continuous testing it is possible to check out the sample, with extended
measuring sensor, optically for turbidities, and thus determines the Cloud Point
manually. Cooling itself can be checked out (i.e., temperature, and change over into
cooling bath temperatures) within a diagnostic test mode and using a stop watch.
