Frog Dissection Pre-lab

Directions: Search American Bullfrog and find the answers to help us prepare for dissection on
Friday.

4. Classification__Amphibia__

5. Why are frogs said to have two lives?because they get one life on water and one life on land.

6. How are amphibians different from reptiles? Reptiles have scales, breathe air, and usually lay
eggs. Most reptiles live on land and reproduce by laying eggs when frogs live "double lives" one in
water with gills and the other on land by growing lungs as they age. They are vertebrates and cold
blooded.

7. What are 3 adaptations that frogs have that make them amphibians?
1. They are cold blooded
2. They respire from both skin and lungs
3. They lay eggs in water
8. List two ways in which tadpoles (immature frogs) and frogs differ from each other?
1. Frogs can breathe on land and in water, whereas tadpoles can only breathe in water.
2. Frogs can go on land, and tadpoles cannot.
3. 3. Tadpoles do not have limbs, frogs do.

External Anatomy
9. Dorsal means?
of, on, or relating to the upper side or back of an animal
10. Ventral means?
of, on, or relating to the underside of an animal.
11. Anterior means?
nearer the front, especially situated in the front of the body or nearer to the head.
12. Posterior means?
further back in position; of or nearer the rear or hind end, especially of the body or a part of it.
13. Head means?
the upper part of the human body, or the front or upper part of the body of an animal, typically
separated from the rest of the body by a neck, and containing the brain, mouth, and sense organs.
14. Torso means?
the trunk of the human body
15. Frog lungs are poorly developed. How does this relate to their skin being thin and moist?
The thin membranous skin is allows the respiratory gases to readily diffuse directly down their
gradients between the blood vessels and the surroundings. When the frog is out of the water,
mucus glands in the skin keep the frog moist, which helps absorb dissolved oxygen from the air.
16. Name 2 ways forelimbs are different than hind limbs.
The frog's back legs are what do most of the work during jumping and landing. A frog's front legs
are its shock absorbers when it lands a jump.
Critical Thinking Questions
17. Frogs produce a huge number of babies at one time WHY do you think this is (HINT: Finding
Nemo)?
I think this happens so if some are attacked, there will be some that survive.

18. The frogs tongue is anchored in the very front opposite to the orientation and anchoring of
humans. Why do you think this is so?
I think that's how it is set because the frog has a smaller esophagus than humans do compared to
the mouth so it can't go that far back.
