Auld Lang Syne—literaly “old long since”—might better be translated as “old


long ago”, “times gone by”, or “days gone by”
Lead-in: Elicit the meaning of “resolution”. Ask if they make “promises” on T-S
30’’
New Year’s Eve and if they usually keep it.
Speaking: Check if the Ss know who the characters are by asking them to PW or WG, if
describe the characters’ looks and personalities. You may need to go over the few people know 2’
vocabulary as well. the sitcom
Video: Context:
It’s 31st December 1998. Ross, Chandler, Joey, Rachel, Phoebe and Monica T-S 30’’
are making New Year’s resolutions. What are they?
Pre and while viewing: Sts match first in pairs and then check with the 3-min
video snippet (stop it when Rachel sits down on the armchair saying “no more
gossiping” or, before that, when she says “it’s easy” and Monica answers: PW, Ind 5’
“Easy? You’ve never kept a resolution”). Explain that they shouldn’t try to
understand everything.
After-viewing: They pair check it, using “going to”. PW 1’
Play the video snippet again, if necessary. 3’
Vocabulary: Ask them to cover #4. Elicit some common New Year’s
resolutions onto the B. They compare their list with the one on #4, adding as T-S 2’
many items as they want to.
Speaking: Students tick their resolutions and compare their plans in small
groups. Elicit some follow-up questions (“Why? Do you think you will keep Ind, PW/

it/them? How will you go about it/them?”) so that they carry on a GW.

Speaking:
Have them briefly discuss resolutions for their next term at the language
school and then you try and squeeze a couple of “I’m going to study more, do PW, WG 4’
