Assignment 4 Roll No.

: 14308

Ans.I. I would suggest teaching phrases using the given extract. It will be a very good
exercise to teach the students that it is not always necessary to put the complete sentences. A
situation may be such that by writing phrases only the complete and intended meaning can be
conveyed. Students are generally taught that a phrase does not have complete meaning and it
attains meaning only when given a position in a sentence. Nevertheless, this extract would be
of great help to make them realise that even phrase have meanings that can be conveyed
without their being attached to verbs and other group of words.

I would ask my students to use the phrases given in the extract in complete sentences. Once
they have made them into proper sentence, I would ask whether they really think it was
necessary to make these phrases into sentences and there are differences in meaning between
the sentences they made and the phrases used in the extract. Next, I will ask my students to
make entries in their diaries and if they have to maintain this on daily basis it will be fine
with them to put every information in complete sentences. I will also bring some more
samples to the class for analysis. I will ask them to give percentage to both the use of phrases
and sentences in diary entries. To conclude, here I will direct their attention to the fact that
instead of writing full-fledged sentences at such situations, phrases are explicitly used.

According to me, the level of the learners for this exercise should me matriculates. And it
would be better to do this exercise in groups rather than in pairs.
Ans.II. Both the tasks and the exercises they offer can be put to develop different aspects of
vocabulary. For instance, in Task E, the aspect of word formation is being developed.
Through this task, the learner would come to learn that no every word he/ she comes across
can be found in a dictionary. Rather, some words can be created as per the requirement. Not
every dictionary would incorporate the words that can be formed using the given words. The
words, such as, day-long excursion would scarcely be found in a dictionary. Also, this task
helps the reader realise that knowing a handful amount of words may make him/ her form
new words out off them whenever/ wherever needed. The concept of compound formation
is also highlighted through this task.

The aspect of synonymy, phrasal verbs and use of a dictionary are being developed through
exercise A in Task F. A learner through this exercise comes to know the concept of phrasal
verb. At the same time, a learner comes to learn two similar verbs used for the same action
and even important lesson that on changing the second element of such verbs the meaning
changes absolutely. Exercise B, in Task F can be put to develop the aspect of word
formation and antonymy. Through this exercise negative prefixes are exposed to a learner
using which he/ she can form antonyms. A learner through this exercise is made realise how
antonyms are possible to form using prefixes.

According to me, the task will be suitable for intermediate level. Before a learner embarks on
these tasks, he/ she must have substantial amount of knowledge regarding grammar of words.
These exercises if exposed at elementary level would trigger confusion in the learner. First
the learner should be exposed to simple words, then he/ she be informed that the language
also comprises compounds. First he/ she should be exposed to simple verbs, later on he/ she
introduced to phrasal verbs. First he/ she should be made acquainted with bases, later on only
he should be informed that negative can be formed using them only. In other words, the level
of complexity should be considered.

Subsequently, I believe it would be appropriate to do the first task in group and the second
one individually. Time is one of the important factors that should be given due consideration
while such tasks are done. If all the learners do these tasks individually, it would take a lot of
time to give feedback. The second task would be best to be done individually as it demands to
examine the individual efforts and knowledge of a learner.
Ans.III. This unit can be utilised to almost all the four skills and their respective sub-skills.
As it is the question of the unit, the exercises should be given due consideration in developing
the language skills. The unit develops listening skills as far as the exercise A is concerned.
The teacher may read the text before the students once or twice and then he/ she may ask the
students to answer the questions that appear in this exercise.

Reading skills are being developed using exercise B. The students should be given a set
time to finish reading the text. Next they may be asked to answer the questions appearing in
exercise B.

Exercise C is best to develop speaking and writing skills. Speaking skills are developed on
the students being asked to talk to their partners about one of the creatures mentioned in the
exercise. Similarly, the same exercise develops the students writing skills when they are
asked to write the teachings that the text gives them

According to me, this task would be suitable for intermediate level.

The problems that I will encounter while I teach this poem include-lack of literary sensibility
in the student, linguistic difficulties of the students and lack of understanding syntactic
complexity found in literature. Students want every line to be paraphrased in factual language
that is similar to the language of science without discerning the fact that ambiguity is the part
and parcel of literature. The expressions such as the prize they do aim at they do procure
are difficult to explain and give definite meaning. If it is done it kills the very essence of
literature and if it is not done they will not be able to answer questions in exam.
