CITY OF ANGELS

Seeking:
Stone -- A movie private detective, 1940s film noir style, a la Humphrey Bogart; suave,
sexual, and witty. Must be charming and fearless. (*Must sing and screen test) [G#2 -
F4]

Stine -- A fiction novelist from New York. He is adapting his book, City of Angels into a
screenplay. He is out of his element in Los Angeles, and making bad choices. Hes
married and he loves his wife, yet he cheats on her with Donna. Stone is everything he
wishes he could be, but he lacks Stones charisma and fearlessness. Should also be
charming, but not to the extent that Stone is. (*Must sing) [G#2 - G#4]

Oolie/Donna -- Donna is Buddys (Hollywood) secretary. Oolie is Stones (film)

secretary. They share the same quality of allowing themselves to fall for the men
(Stone/Stine) who dont really see them. She must be reliable (the trusted girl Friday)
and keen, but she is also vulnerable and wears her heart on her sleeve. (*Must sing and
screen test) [G3 - F5]

Alaura Kingsley/Carla Fidler -- Alaura (film) is the seductive character who appears to
be a damsel in distress, but in fact masterminds a criminal plot to inherit her husbands
money. She must be able to wrap Stone around her finger using sex as her weapon.
Must be comfortable with sexuality on stage. Carla is the Hollywood actress who plays
Alaura. She is married to Buddy but sleeping with Jimmy Powers. (*Must sing and
screen test) [G3 - E5]

Gabby Stine/Bobbi -- Gabby is Stines wife. She is a book editor from New York. She
loves Stine, but she is not happy with how he is selling out and cheating on her. (She is
shrewd and can tell when he is being unfaithful.) Bobbi is the film character, based on
Stines love for Gabby, with whom Stone is so in love that he takes the wrap for her
committing murder. Bobbi must be the seductive part of Gabby that we do not see in
Stines real wife. This character must be able to be practical (brains) in Hollywood and
sexual (body) in the film. (*Must sing and screen test) [Eb3 - F5]

Buddy Fidler/Irwin S. Irving -- Buddy is the big-shot Hollywood director who is making
Stines film. He is sharp-tongued, ruthless, and not polite in the least. He is the
stereotype of the old Hollywood mogul who steps on anyone to succeed. He is also a
complete womanizer. Irwin is the film character strongly based on Buddy. (*Must sing)
[C3 - Eb4]

Mallory/Avril Raines -- Mallory is the 21 year old stepdaughter of Alaura (daughter of

Luther). She is overtly sexual and ambitious and instantly willing to seduce Stone to get
what she wants. Avril is the not-so-smart actress who plays the role of Mallory. She
sleeps with everyone in Hollywood to get ahead. **Must be comfortable with brief
(topless) nudity. (*Must sing and screen test) [G#3 - B4]

Munoz/Pancho Vargas -- Munoz is the Hispanic ex-partner of Stone. He is a

plainclothes detective who feels slighted at Stones ability to get out of trouble for murder
and spends his life trying to put Stone away out of revenge. Must be ruthlessly and
unapologetically vengeful. Pancho is the actor who plays Munoz. (*Must sing and screen
test) [D3 - F#4]

Jimmy Powers -- Based loosely on Frank Sinatra, Jimmy is a recording star--a hot
young crooner with a good deal of arrogance. Must sing with a velvety, seductive sound,
and must be able to at least somewhat pass for the character of Stone (he is ultimately
cast as the character in the final movie), but should not have nearly the machismo and
charisma that the real Stone possesses. (*Must sing) [C3 - G4]

Peter Kingsley/Gerald -- Luther Kingsleys son. Described as 61, about 24 years old,
and tan. He should be attractive and athletic. There is questionable sexual behavior
between he and his stepmother, Alaura. (*No singing required)

The Angel City Quartet -- A Hollywood recording group, consisting of SATB, able to
sing in complicated, complex harmonies and jazz scatting. Generally speaking, they
function only as the AC4 and do not double in any other roles. (*Must sing)
Soprano [A3 - A5]
Alto [A3- D5]
Tenor [D#3 - B4]
Bass [G2 - G#4]

Sonny & Big Six -- They are the hired thugs in the film, who pursue Stone. Big Six is
described as a mountain of a man and must be very physically threatening to Stone.
Sonny is small and menacing, the more vocal, leader of the two. Think stereotypical
1940s Hollywood thug stock characters. (*No singing required)

Pasco -- A uniformed police officer. He is Munozs partner and equally interested in

making Stones life unhappy. He sings backup on Munozs song. (*Some harmony back-
up singing required)

Luther Kingsley/Werner -- Luther, described as having the head of a lion, is the 75

year old patriarch of the wealthy Kingsley empire. He is currently paralyzed and confined
to an iron lung (hence, he is a primary character but listed under secondary roles
because he doesnt do much more than breathe and gasp). Werner is the stately actor
who plays Luther. Must be at least somewhat formidable looking when he is out of the
contraption, so we see what Luther would look like in health. (*No singing required)

Dr. Mandril -- Mandril is Luther Kingsleys spiritual guide. He is a yogi who regularly
chants and ommmms. We find out that secretly he is angling for a share of Kingsleys
wealth upon his death, but he doesnt make it that far. (*No singing required)

Margie -- The madam at the local whorehouse. (*No singing required)

Anna -- Buddys personal masseuse. Should be sexy and young to reflect Buddys
choice in who would get paid to rub his body. (*No singing required)

Margaret -- The Kingsleys maid. (*No singing required)

Gilbert -- Buddys quick-witted personal barber. (*No singing required)

Harlan Yamato -- The Los Angeles County coroner. Sings backup in Munoz song.
(*Some harmony back-up singing required)

Gaines -- The Commissioner of Police for Los Angeles. (*No singing required)

Mahoney -- An LA Press Agent with a sense of humor. Sings backup in Munoz song.
(*Some harmony back-up singing required)

Del DaCosta -- A Hollywood film score composer in the palm of Buddy Fidler. Plays
piano at the Sunday Brunch party. (*Must Play Piano on Stage)
Featured Dancers -- Four tracks will be cast primarily to be dancers for the Prologue,
Everybodys Gotta Be Somewhere, and for transitioning scenes. (*No singing required)

Various Other Ensemble -- Additional tracks, including a man on a phone, a couple of

prostitutes, two orderlies, and party guests, etc. will be played by some of the above
actors in secondary roles
