Technically these two models are not

the Roadmasters bolts to its fork. The
Ultra Limited would have been a better
match; alas none was available. Aside
from that one difference, however, these

WANT TO GET BIKERS UP IN ARMS? Revive a hallowed brand.
Established manufacturers often get a pass when producing even ugly
or ill-considered motorcycles, and nobody questions their right to exist,
but a new manufacturer using an old name fights steep resistance, no
matter how committed it is. Brough Superior owner Mark Upham is doing
his best to honor the spirit of the late George Brough, which is probably
impossible in the 21st century because Brough invented a genrethe

2016 Brough Superior SS100 makes a strong pitch for all these.
One of Georges innovations, and a hallmark of the brand, was
the industrys first saddle tank, which was nickel-plated and
shapely, with a rounded nose and pleasing proportions. The
new Brough Superior lifts its tank design directly from a 1920s
Pendine racing model, which used triple straps to bind tank to
frame; its the visual DNA of a Brough Superior and a feature
Upham insisted on. Underneath that old-style tank (built in
polished aluminum) we leave the past behind and enter the
21st century, with a unique engine and innovative chassis.

as making something pretty. From there, the most important ele-
ments (to design around) are the engine and the riding position.
For The Scrappier, Woolie had the RC8 and the idea that he
wanted it to ride like a supermoto.

WHAT YOU HAVE, WHAT YOU NEED, AND WHAT YOU DONT
From there, you have to take a good look at your donor bike.
What parts work well? Which dont? Which ones are conducive
to what you want to do, which ones arent, and, of the ones that
arent, which can be removed and which need to be re-worked?
The RC8 had electronic systems that Woolie didnt want to
disrupt, as well as an airbox that was mounted exceptionally
high and required some creativity with the tank design.

CREATE A BUILD SHEET

While yours may not look as detailed as Woolies, get a list
going of the parts youll need. Differentiate between ones you
can buy and ones youll need to make/have made.
Woolie builds a lot of his own parts by hand, but for the ones
he doesnt, he sources parts from small American companies
whenever possible.

MATH, MATH, MATH

Geometry is incredibly important in determining the handling
characteristics of a motorcycle, and length and trail numbers
are fairly standard and can be taken from whatever stock
bikes inspire the build. Ergonomics are also important, and the
builder should take into account the bikes intended use as well
as the owners/riders stature.
When talking about standard bike length and trail numbers,
Woolie mentioned that he uses the Ducati 916 as the baseline
for his caf racer builds.

IT ALL COMES BACK TO FUNCTION

For Woolie, building custom bikes always comes back to func-
tion. Thats the thing thats going to make the bike feel special
and feel like its custom tailored to you.
Turning a KTM RC8 superbike into a supermoto is no easy
task, but Woolie was serious about wanting it to function like
one. All of the measurements for the length, trail, and riding
position came directly from his Honda CRF450R supermoto
racebike.

GO TEST!
Every custom bike is a work in progress. Tinker and go ride,
then come back and tinker some more. Or get someone who is
exceptionally skilled to go test for you and bring you feedback.
Woolie is more than capable of doing his own testing, espe-
cially with Deus Santa Monica shop located so closely to the
Malibu canyons and several racetracks. He also gets a hand
from Red Bull professional stunt rider and all-around amazing
dude Aaron Colton, whos not only becoming a reputable bike
builder himself but has become like a son to Woolie (or best
friend, if you ask Aaron about Woolie).

DONT ABANDON THE BASICS

At the end of the day, motorcycles still need to do several things:
handle well, hold a decent amount of gas, run for a reasonable
distance without breaking down, etc. There are plenty of cus-
tom bikes that look pretty but cant actually be ridden well or
safely, and those are not much more than works of art.
Every bike Woolie makes is meant to go and to go fast. He
sees that as his legacy, but it will only be a legacy if the bikes
and their performance stand the test of time.

drama because it brings us catharsis. In
plain English, drama takes our emotions
out for a gallop (of a kind they dont get
from waiting at the light, riding crowded

sports team or hero, we enjoy by proxy
the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.
It was grand in 2004 to see eets
