Regardless of the ever-increasing technology in motorcycles, few things have a greater effect on
performance than rubber. Thats right, tires. The bigger the bikes get, the more important knob

Our Ducati Multistrada Enduro rode on its OE Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tires, and our Adventure

THINGS TO KNOW
BEFORE YOU GO
THE HUTS
There are 14 official 10th Mountain
Division huts and another 20 pri-
vately owned ones that can be booked
through the same reservation system
(huts.org). Huts are located between
9,700 and 11,700 feet of elevation
and include living/dining areas heated
by wood-burning stoves and kitchens
equipped with propane cooktops and/
or wood-burning cook stoves (plus
basic utensils for cooking and eating).
Most huts have sleeping space for up
to 16 people divided among several
rooms on a continuous bunk system.
Reservations are per bed, so if you
dont book the entire hut, expect to
spend the night making new friends. In
all of my trips, Ive yet to share a hut
with a traveler I wish were not there.
PACK IT IN. PACK IT OUT.
Theres no trash service, so pack
out what you brought in.
LEAVE IT BETTER THAN
YOU FOUND IT.
This goes for the trail and the huts. Let
other users enjoy the experience too.
BE READY TO WALK.
You can connect hundreds of miles
of trails to reach the huts, but youll
have to park the motorcycles and walk
the last quarter mile or so. Keeping
bikes and support vehicles out of sight
helps maintain the remote feel for
all visitors. Hoofing your gear while
wearing stiff off-road boots might not
sound awesome, but its worth every
step for that feeling of seclusion.

The German racer whos conquered America

to a press conference shirtless and admit
he has a can of Coors Light in his koozie;
fun is part of his program. His post-race
cracks about eating donuts for breakfast
became such a running joke in 2016 that,
after dominating his second Lucas Oil Pro
Motocross championship (with 20 of 24
moto wins), his celebration T-shirt was a mock
Jimmy Johns menu with fare such as donuts,
steak, and mac n cheese. The price: $94 each, of course.
He says he doesnt want to be cocky, but his confidence often
betrays him. I work harder than anybody else, so I have fun harder
than anybody else in my industry, he said in a poolside social media
post from vacation in early September (he apologized the next day).
That post was kind of stupid, he told Cycle World, owning his gaffe.
When asked about his flaws, Roczen says, People around me would
probably say that I am too honest.
Roczen, 22, has been racing in America full time since 2012. As a
17-year-old he lived in the pool house of professional wakeboarder
Rusty Malinoski whom he still calls a friend. Ken is really confident,
but it may rub people wrong, Malinoski said. He knows hes a badass
and he rips, and hes not scared to say hes the best.
The opposite of German stereotypes, Roczen is open and unreserved.
