Thermodynamics
Assignment (1)

1. A tank whose volume is unknown is divided into two parts by a partition. One side
of the tank contains 0.01 m3of refrigerant-134a that is a saturated liquid at 0.8
MPa, while the other side is evacuated. The partition is now removed, and the
refrigerant fills the entire tank. If the final state of the refrigerant is 20C and 400
kPa, determine the volume of the tank, and the amount of heat transferred during
the process.

2. The rigid tank shown has a volume of 0.06 m3 and initially contains a two-phase
liquidvapor mixture of H2O at a pressure of 15 bar and a quality of 20%. As the
tank contents are heated, a pressure-regulating valve keeps the pressure constant in
the tank by allowing saturated vapor to escape. Neglecting kinetic and potential
energy effects, determine the total mass in the tank, in kg, and the amount of heat
transfer, in kJ, if heating continues until the final quality is x=0.5.

3. Estimate the pressure of ammonia at a temperature of 27oC and a specific volume

of 0.526 m3/kg, using SRK equation.
