mentioningtheprogramthatIenrolledmyselfin.Thismaygiveanimpressionregardingcoachingscontrarytotheir
actualnaturewhichmaymisguidethefutureaspirantsintheirchoice.Sotocleartheair,Iputforwardmyassociation
withthecoachingsinthispostandtheirutility.

ForMains

Duringmyentirepreparation,IwasinDelhionlyforthreemonthsbeginningSeptember2014tillendNovember2014.
IwasunpreparedinmanyofthetopicsofGeneralStudiessinceIhadbegunmyGSpreparationslateandsothought
ofjoiningsomecoachinginDelhipostprelims.WiththisinmindIwenttoDelhitodoashortdurationcrashcourse
betweentheprelimsandmains.

OnlySynergywasoeringsomethingthatcameclosetoacrashcourse.Itpromisedtocovermanytopicsofthevarious
GSpapers.ThoughSynergycoveredsometopicslikeWorldHistoryandPolityinsomedetail,thepacewasveryslow.
ThereasonbeingthattheyhadmixedtheirregularoneyearbatchwiththecrashcoursebatchIwasin.Thiswasatotal
mockery.Theadvertisementhadmadeitlooklikethattherewouldbeadedicatedbatchanditsucceededintakinga
lotofusforarideThepaceofteachingwasadjustedtothetheregularoneyearbatchaspirantswhowerenoteven
givingtheexamthatyear!.Theteacherswouldkeeponharpingonverytrivialissuesforlongleadingtoalotof
wastageoftime.Forstudentslikeuswhohadsomebasicknowledgeandhadenrolledtogetgreaterinsightintothe
topics,itwasanearcompletewasteofmoneyandmostimportantlytime.Whattheytaughtin2hourswemostly
eitherkneworcouldcoverinaroundhalfanhour.Istoppedgoingtotheclassesafteramonthandfounditbe erto
skimthroughthenotesofotherswhohada endedtheclasses.

TestSeries

GeneralStudies:IenrolledforSynergyTestSeriesforGeneralStudies.TheTestSerieswasoneprogramthatdidhelpme
toagreatextentinthewaystoapproachthe3hourtimeperiod,toapproachaquestionetc.Talkingspecicallyabout
thetestseriesbysynergy,feedbackwasnotatalluptothemark.Therewerenoinputsgivenonhowtostartorendthe
answer.Itdidnotsuggestanychangesinthestyleofwriting.Theveryobjectiveofthetestserieswastohavesomeone
evaluateyouranswersandtosuggestcorrectionsandmodications.Thistestseriesonlyservedtheformerpurpose
withtotalneglectoftheformer.Intheendyouhadtondfaultsyourselfalongwithyourfriendsandtoarriveat
improvementsonyourown.Thequestionsinsomepaperswereveryarbitraryandtotallyirrelevant.Forexamplethe
ethicspaperwastootheoreticalandthequalityofcasestudiesverypoor.Themarkingwasalsoinconsistent.Thegood
thingwasthatithadspecicdateswhichmadeyouprepareforit.Alargenumberofaspirantstookthistestseries
whichledtoameasurementofyourperformance.Howeveritwouldbefoolhardytoassumethatifyouperformhere
youwillbeassuredofagoodperformanceintheultimateexam.

MathsthaninElectricalEngineeringevenafterhavingstudieditincollege.ThisreducedmyfaithinElectrical
EngineeringandIdecidedtodropitandtakeanArtssubjectalongwithMaths.HowevermyloyaltywithMathsdid
notlastlongandafterbuyingalotofbooksandwastingalotoftimeonit,Idecidedtodumpit.ItriedPhysicsfora
weekorso,thentriedthepopularoptionalsinGeographyandPublicAdministrationforsometime.Howevernothing
gotmeinterestedandalsoIusedtogetscaredathavingtocompleteanaltogethernewsubjectallbymyself.Mytrials

otherslikeMachines.Iwasnotsureofge ingagoodscoreevenafterinvestingalotoftimeandeortinElectrical.

MoreoverIfearedthatelectricalwouldtakeatollonmyGeneralStudiespreparation(whichitdidtakeeventuallyin
hindsightifIlookatthescores).

Thevariationindicultylevelsofthepaperacrossyearsalsosoweddoubtsinmymindregardingwhatwould
happenifatoughpapercomesintheyearIappearandmypreparationwouldthencometonaught.

TakingthePlunge

Sowhateventuallyledmetomychoice?Anumberofthings.Forsure,myfailedtrialswithvariousothersubjects.To
startanoptionalwithnobackgroundseemedtomelikeamountaintoohardtoclimb.SoIdecidedtosticktomycore
subjectinwhichIhadafairbitofknowledge.

Thechangeinpa erntooneoptionalmeantthatIcoulddevotetimetoit.ManaginganotheroptionalwithEEisafar
tougherjobthanmanaginggeneralstudiesalongwithEE.

ThehighscoressecuredbyPrakashRajpurohitSirandPrinceDhwanSirinElectricalEngineeringsigniedthatwith
rightstrategy,sourcesandhardworkitwaspossibletogiveyourrankagreatleap.

MoreoverIhadvacillatedfortoolong.IntheprocessIhadwastedalotoftime.Icouldnotaorditanymorenotafter
joiningmyworkplace.Ididnothavetheluxuryoftimeanymore.Ihadtomakeachoiceandmakeitfast.

UltimatelyImadethechoicesomehwereinJuly2013andthechoicewasElectricalEngineering.

Youmakeachoiceandstickwithit.Thereisnopointthenlookingbackanddevelopingcoldfeet.Someyearsthe
papermightbetougher.Butthenithelpstorememberthatitsallrelativeandifyouarepreparedwellenough,no
ma erhowharditisyouwillemergerelativelyunscathed.

Lessons

AsIlookback,ifIhadtodrawlessonsfromwhatIdidIwouldcomeupwiththefollowing

1.Chooseanoptionalwisely.Takeyourtime.Butnottoomuchtimeorotherwiseyoustarttofeelthecrunch
