application fee, cause somebodys gotta pay for
this wall.

Dear Distinguished Mr. Speaker Bercow,

In 2015, your country would not allow the seventh grade class from the Lyce Denis Diderot
in Nairobi, Kenya, to include the African students on their spring break school trip to England.
The European students were allowed to go, but not the Africans. The students were very upset
about this discrimination and after shedding many tears, decided in solidarity to cancel the trip.
The African students were 11 and 12 year-olds, and their trips had been completely paid for in
advance. Their bags were packed. They started learning around 9:00 pm, the night before they
were to depart, that the official decision was to not grant the African students visas. For many of
them, this was to be their first trip outside of Africa, and they had been planning this trip since
the prior October. These facts can be easily verified.

Your country has a long standing policy of discriminating against Africans by requiring them
to fill out paperwork for visas and pay fees, while non Africans can frequently walk into your
country for free. In fact, the UK website lists 114 countries whose citizens need visas, and 48%
of those countries are African countries. Africa being the only instance where an entire
continent is placed on your list. Furthermore, the stated visa requirements are vague, allowing
arbitrary enforcement. Africans must show bank account balances that far exceed the amount
that the average American maintains, barring them from England. They must have an employer
vouch for them, something that would shock the conscience of Americans. They must show
continued employment. Any prior job loss means being banned from a holiday in England. Why
do you allow unemployed Americans into your country, but not Africans? Kenyans were even
threatened with exorbitant bond schemes. And the list goes on.

Consequently, unlike other college students, Africans are not allowed to be familiar with the
worlds heritage sites, know the meaning of popular foreign phrases, use a gap year to see the
world, or participate in classroom discussions with the same level of knowledge that favored
nation students possess. Your countrys poorist, and effectively racist policies deprive Africans
of being global citizens.

It seems to me the only real difference between President Trumps travel ban and yours is
frank and honest disclosure.

Sincerely,
Marlie Smith
former student at the Lyce Denis Diderot, Nairobi, Kenya
