BSME III
I. OBJECTIVES
I.1 To be able to label of equal volume water tank with irregularity widths
I.2 To derive the formula in labeling these tank of equal volume by integration
I.3 To calibrate the labeled tanks containing equal volume using the gravimetric method
of measurements
I.4 To prove that integration is a powerful tool dealing problems of irregular shape

II. DISCUSSION

In everyday life we may have encounter problems dealing with geometric figures
specifically of irregular shape container such as spherical tanks, cylindrical tanks
which are positioned horizontally
II. Materials
3.1. Spherical tank of specified radius with sight glass or water label indicator
3.2. Cylindrical tank
3.3. Steel ruler
3.4. Filling water
3.5 Pen Marker
3.6. Calculator
3.7. Graduated cylinder one-liter capacity
3.8. Triple beam balance

IV. PROCEDURE
Gravimetric procedure

4.1 Prepare the necessary needed in the experiment

4.2 for cylindrical tank compute the volume using the inside dimension and using
V=PI()^2 L .

4.3 divide this volume into what has been assigned to you by the instructor, Round the
quotient of this volume to the nearest whole number value. This will be the constant volume per
label that will e assign to the tank

4.4 using the volume per label , fill in the first volume to the tanks and label the height as
indicated by sight glass or water label indicator

4.5 Repeat the procedure by filling constant volume per label and making a marking in
each label until the tank is filled

4.6 Fill-in the necessary gathered data in the data sheet

4.7 For spherical tank, do the same but instead use V=4PI()^2/3
ANALYTICAL METHOD:
1. For cylindrical tank, derive the formula in labeling the tank of equal volume using
integration and considering that the tank is in horizontal position . Integration be
done by making conditions that the point of origin be at the center of the circle of
the tank .
2. Using the derived formula, substitute the incremental constant volume and other
constant values such as the radius and length to this formula and solve for the
height of each label.
3. Fill-in the necessary solved value to the data sheet
4. For the spherical tank, volume is derived by integrating the revolving circle
having x as its radius infinitesimal dy with limits r (-r + y ) also the revolving
circle has the formula X^2+Y^2=r^2
5. Repeat procedure no2. And no.3
