I can demonstrate the results of a chemical reaction, compare and contrast the properties of mixtures and solutions.
Step #1: Purpose
Does the state of borax change when combined with glue? Step #2: Research Define the following key terms Mixture: A substance made by mixing other substances together. Solution: A means of solving a problem or dealing with a difficult situation. Physical property: Can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter. Chemical property: A property or characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition or identity of the substance is changed Physical change: Affecting the form of a chemical substance, but not its chemical composition Chemical reaction: A process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance Molecule: A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. Monomer: A molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer. Polymer: A substance that has a molecular structure consisting chiefly or entirely of a large number of similar units bonded together The chemical formula for borax is Na2B4O7 X 10H20 What elements are found in borax? How many of each? Na- Sodium- 2, B- Boron- 4, O- Oxygen-7, H- Hydrogen-2 Step #3: Hypothesis: If you combine borax with glue it will undergo a chemical change because it will form a new substance.
Step #4: Procedure
1. Put one spoon of water into your cup or bowl. Add one spoon of white glue and mix well. 2. In another cup or bowl, create your borax solution. Mix one spoon of borax with five spoons of water. Stir well. The solution will become saturated, so all of the borax will dissolve. 3. Add one spoon of the borax solution to your original cup of glue and water. Stir for 60 seconds. 4. Remove the substance and knead it with your hands for one to two minutes. Step #5: Analysis List the physical properties of each substance in the table below.
Glue Borax Goofy Putty
White Gritty Gooey
Sticky White Moist About 2 teaspoons Looks like salt White Compare and contrast mixtures and solutions. List other substances that are polymers or are made of polymers. What happened when you combine the borax solution and glue mixture? Explain how you know. Is your hypothesis valid? Why or why not? If not, what should your next steps be? Step #6: Conclusion My conclusion is that when you mixed the two chemicals of glue and borax together, you would create a chemical reaction, which is what created the putty. This would also help prove that my hypothesis is valid because when you did combine the glue with the borax, it did demonstrate a chemical change. All of the materials had quantitative and qualitative qualities. The glue was white, sticky, and it was about two teaspoons full. The borax was gritty, white, looked like salt, and had one spoonful. The goofy putty was a mixture; gooey but not sticky, moist, and white. If you wanted to change the color of the goofy putty all you would have to do is put dots all around it with a colored highlighter and then knead it for 30 seconds to a minute.
