Kellogg Elementary Science Night

On October 13, 2016 an ener-
getic group of Santa Barbara
SHPE professionals volun-
teered at Kellogg Elementary
Schools Annual Science
Night. On this evening the
school offered students and
families an opportunity to en-
joy classrooms full of science
activities. One such classroom
was the Electric Motor Work-
shop hosted by the local pro-
fessional SHPE team. The
workshops were well attended
with students ranging from 2nd
to 6th grade and served in our
collective effort to reach local
students and expose them to
science and engineering con-
cepts.
Armando Veloz, an electrical
engineering professional, be-
gan the workshops with a brief
over view of the theory and
then the students were free to
assemble their electric motors
with a little help from the vol-
unteers (Juan Zepeda, Cynthia
Barajas, Thien, Laura Yanez,
and Hansel Corsa). The chil-
dren began by sanding off the
insulated ends of the copper
coil at 180 degrees then fixed
paper clips to the ends of the D
-size battery with masking
tape. A magnet was then
placed on the side of the bat-
tery and the coil placed be-
tween the paper clips. A com-
plete circuit was made once the
coil was placed between the
paper clips and with a slight
flick the electric motor began
spinning freely! The children
had a great time calibrating
their electric motors and exer-
cising their fingers with the
assembly.
In reflection both the children
and volunteers shared a great
experience together. Plus the
children got to take home their
newly made invention. We

ca Holland of Kellogg School
and Armando Veloz for their
efforts in making this night a
success!

Scholarships Raffle
On November 18th, 2016
SHPE Santa Barbara held
their annual raffle fundrais-
er at High Sierra Bar and
Grill. The cost of each tick-
et was $2 which enabled us
to reach and pass our goal
by raising $1013! We will
use this money to award
scholarships to our local
Santa barbara City College
and University of Califor-
nia, Santa Barbara STEM certificate, an axxess card,

Bowling Night
Every year SHPE SB host our
annual Bowling Night to break
the intimidation barrier between
professionals and students. We
Invite Los Ingenieros students
from UCSB and SHPE Ingeni-
um students from SBCC to join
us. This allows us to have fun
and connect with the students.
This allows the students to feel
more comfortable and network.
We had over 24 students and
over 15 professionals join us.
Our 2 hours bowling session
was hosted a Zodos Bowling &
Beyond. We hope everyone
enjoyed the event as we contin-
ue to support our local students. Mission:

Professionals vs. Students Soccer Game
It was a beautiful sunny Satur-
day morning, October 29,
when members from the local
SHPE student chapters from
UCSB and SBCC teamed up to
play a friendly soccer game
against the SHPE Santa Barba-
ra professional members.
The game is intended to bring
students and professional to-
gether in an effort to improve
interaction and communica-
tions between the organizations
in a relaxed setting. Two
games had been played over
the last two years with students
winning both of those
games..barely.
The students were looking to
extend their winning streak
over the professional to 3
games. But it was not to be.
This time, the SHPE profes-
sionals were ready for the chal-
lenge. About 5 minutes into
the game, the professional
scored their first goal using
crisp passing and a well exe-
cuted finish. The score re-
mained 1-0 for a while until a
second goal came at around the
20 minute mark when the pro-
fessionals scored again. As the
teams grew in size with players
from both sides joining the
teams, it became increasingly
difficult to score. The profes-
sionals however were able to
score 3 more goals before the
half ended to take a 5-0 lead
going into the second half.
The second half was a defen-
sive battle as both teams con-
tinued to recruit players. The
new players on the student
team made a difference as the
students scored their first goal
about 10 minutes into the sec-
ond half making the score 5-1
in favor of the professionals.
After this point, both offenses
struggled to score the rest of
the game due in great part to
the excellent defense played by
the teams. Still, the profes-
sionals managed to score one
more time making the score 6-
1.
Overall, the objective of the
game was accomplished as the
students and professionals had
a great time playing the game
and getting to know each other.
Both teams look forward to the
next match sometime in 2017
where more fun and new
friendship bonds will be made.

Jose Bonilla, Engineer of the Year
MESA Sign-in Innovation Project, Project of the Year
The MESA Sign-in Innovation
Project allowed students from Santa
Barbara City College (SBCC) to
create a sign-in kiosk for the SBCC
MESA Center. With the help of
alumni in industry the students
gathered requirements, designed,
implemented, and tested a kiosk
system that would allow the center
to replace the old registration sys-
tem, pen and paper. The team ex-
celled and presented their creation
to their sponsors and peers. This
project is a milestone that has intro-
duced more opportunities so other
students and alumni can continue to
collaborate together.

Jose has been involved in SHPE
since 2003 as student of Cal Poly,
San Luis Obispo where he majored
in Industrial Engineering.
The sense of leadership he devel-
oped in college led him to continue
his involvement in the organization
as a professional.
Jose joined Raytheon EW
(Electronic Warfare) in Goleta,
California the summer 2006, attend-
ed his first professional SHPE
meeting in September, of that year
where assumed the position of Ex-
ternal Vice President. As EVP he
led many student outreach pro-
grams throughout Santa Barbara
County and was instrumental in the
start of the SBCC SHPE Student
chapter.
Joses commitment and dedication
continued as he led our chapter as
president for 6 consecutive terms up
