PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS: SPREADSHEETS, WORD TEMPLATE, NARRATED POWERPOINT
Name: Cassie Smith
Grade Level: 6th Grade Content Area: Earth Science Basic Productivity Tool Used: Microsoft Word to create a graph Standards Addressed: S6E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about current scientific views of the universe and how those views evolved. C. Analyze and interpret data to compare and contrast the planets in our solar system in terms of: size relative to Earth.
Blooms Level of Critical Thinking: Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating Description of how to implement in the class: Students will be creating their own graph in Microsoft word using the different planets and how big or small they are relative to the Earth. By using a graph, my students will be able to see which planets are bigger than Earth and which are smaller. We will be doing this together as a class so that I can walk them through this since creating a graph may be a little difficult for 6th graders to handle on their own. Creating a graph also gives them a visual to put in their heads of which planets are bigger than Earth and which are smaller. I think that this will help them learn the information better. Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): This lesson would be a level 3. The students are using a productivity tool in order to create a graph. They are focusing on content while doing this activity. Some higher order thinking skills are involved such as applying and analyzing. Another reason that makes this lesson/activity a level 3 would be that it is teacher-centered. Many students will not know how to create a graph on their own so it needs to be teacher-centered. Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided *: The Word document that I am attaching is an example of what the graph should look like once we are all done with the lesson. Every students graph should look relatively the same. However, the color of their columns will obviously vary. The data presented should all be the same though. We will want to include all the planets in our graphs. Make sure that the students know the sizes are based off being relative to the Earth. Other comments about your proposed spreadsheet/graph/chart activity: This would be more of an activity to do with your students during a lesson about the current scientific views of the universe.
