Emperor Alexios IIIs charters for the monastery of Hilandar

and old Serbian writers

The focus of the study is set on two earliest surviving Greek charters in the archive of
the monastery of Hilandar on Mount Athos, a chrysobull and a sigillion of emperor Alexios
III Angelos, which are also the two most important documents for the founding of the Serbian
monastery. It discusses the genesis of their texts, identifies their parts which might have been
borrowed from Saint Savas letters of request to emperor Alexios, as well as the reception of
the charters in the work of two 13th-century Serbian writers, Domentijan and Teodosije.

Saint Sava

Emperor Alexios III issued the foundation chrysobull for Hilandar in June 1198 in
response to the request of the monk Symeon, former grand upan Stefan Nemanja, and the
petition of the protos Gerasimos and the assembly of the Athonite hegoumenoi. Since the text
of the protos petition is preserved, the content of the request submitted by the monk Symeon

on behalf of himself and his son Sava may be reconstructed with much certainty. Though re-
worked, the text of the request is best preserved in the introductory part of the chrysobull which
speaks of Symeon and of his son Rastko, who took the monastic name of Sava: although, of
course, younger than his father, Sava has preceded him on the monastic path and assisted him
into spiritual life. Having seen deserted monasteries on Mount Athos, Symeon and Sava have
felt it their duty to revive them and, therefore, plead with the emperor to assign the deserted
monastery of Hilandar to them so that they may make it into a retreat for them and Serbian
monks. That it was Sava who composed the letter for the emperor, the text of which is included
in the chrysobull, may be proved by its comparison with Savas surviving texts. The content of
his other request, which led to the issuance of emperor Alexios sigillion (1199), is also retold
in the latter document, and its least reworked part is the one in which Sava speaks about how
he ran away to Mount Athos and took monastic vows.

Domentijan and Teodosije

There is a divergence of opinion as to whether, and to what extent, Domentijan and

Teodosije, both Athonite monks, drew on the Greek charters of Alexios III. A comparative
analysis shows that Domentijan certainly, and Teodosije very likely read the chrysobull of
1198. Both borrowed the motif of Hilandar as a retreat for Serbian monks and the motif of
the son (Sava) preceding the father (Symeon) as a monk and assisting him into spiritual life.
There are, however, first in Domentijan, and then in Teodosije considerable departures from
the Greek charters, which may be explained by the hagiographic nature of their texts and the
situation on Mount Athos in the mid thirteenth century.
