LEARNING CENTRE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Student Name: Emma Slaunwhite Date: Feb. 01 2017 Age Group: 14 Months 3 Years

Purpose:

Much of the artwork on the walls of the classroom consists of the paint activity.
Upon speaking with my site supervisor, it was found that the children enjoy
painting. It was also observed that the children seem to enjoy activities that
involve hands-on manipulatives. The purpose of this activity is for the children to
explore painting with an unusual manipulative.

Name:

Paper Tube Heart Art

Objectives:
1) Cause-and-Effect Exploration (4.3): Children will learn the cause and effect of
the new manipulatives as they explore its functions (Excerpts from ELECT, 2014,
p.33)

2) Tool Use (5.2): Children will practice adapting their skill of tool use to a new
manipulative (Excerpts from ELECT, 2014, p.36)

3) Pincer Grasp (5.2): Children will improve their fine motor skills as they switch
between holding the manipulative in a palmer or pincer grasp (Excerpts from
ELECT, 2014, p.36)

Materials:

-Assorted Colours of Paint (red, purple, and white)

-Sheets of Paper (one per child)

-A Pen
-Cardboard Rolls Cut and Stapled into The Shape of a Heart (x7)

-Paint Tray

-Placemats (x4)

Implementation:

-This activity will be set up on the small red table inside the classroom, allowing
four children to participate at a time.

-Each spot will have a placemat and a sheet of paper.

-In the center of the table there will be a paint tray with different colours of paint
as well as the heart shaped cardboard rolls. These items will be easily reachable
so that all children can use them at their own discretion.

-Ms. Emma will invite a child to the table to participate in the activity.

-Ms. Emma will watch and see what each child does with the paint and the
unusual manipulative.

-When each child is finished with the activity, Ms. Emma will place their paper on
the drying rack to dry and then invite another child to participate.

Teaching Strategies:

Invitation: Ms. Emma will motivate the children to try the activity by positively
encouraging them to take a seat. She will also invite children to watch their peers
as they participate so that the child may gain interest and want to try it
themselves.

Silence: Ms. Emma will not participate in adult talk as it can be distracting to the
learning environment. Instead, she will avoid interrupting while the children are
engaged in the activity. This will allow them to freely explore without adult
influence.
