forthiscartoonearththe7reflectivitycontrastsatthelayer
boundaries.

Theseismictraceshowever,havemoreinformationthan
that.Onthezerophasetrace,thereare21extrema(peaks/
troughs).Worseyet,onthephaserotatedtracethereare28.So
somehow,theprocessofwavepropagationhasembeddedmore
informationthanweneed.Actually,inthatcase,maybewe
shouldn'tcallitinformation:it'snoise.

Itcanbehardtotellwhatisrealandwhatissidelobeand
soon,youareassigninggeologicalsignificancetonoise.A
literalinterpretationofthepeaksandtroughswouldproduce
