Chapter 3

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This Chapter presents the methods and procedures,

sampling technique, the measuring instrument, the data

gathering procedure and the statistical tools that were

used in this study.

Research Design

This study will make use of the descriptive-

correlation design. This method will involve the collection

of data in order to answer the questions regarding the

coping mechanism of athletes of the University of Cagayan

Valley.

The technique will be used under descriptive method is

the purposive survey approach and evaluation. Questionnaire

survey will be employed to gather data in this study.

Respondents of the Study

Respondents of this study will the varsity athletes of

University of Cagayan Valley for SY 2016-2017. A total of

125 registered athletes will be the respondents of the

study.

Data Gathering Tool

This study will employ survey questionnaire to assess

the coping mechanism of athletes of the University of

Cagayan Valley. The survey questionnaire will be divided of

the following.

Part 1 of the questionnaire determines the profile of

the respondents.

Part 2 of the questionnaire determines the perceptions

of the respondents on coping mechanism of athletes in terms

of in terms of interpersonal, intrapersonal, academic

stress and environment stress.

Part 3 of the questionnaire determines the problems

encountered by the respondents in using the laboratory

tools and equipment.

Part 4 of the questionnaire proposes measures in

coping mechanism of athletes.

A modified Likerts scale will be employed for the

purpose of determining the degree of responses of the

respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

Prior to the study, the researchers will send a letter

request address to the Dean, School of Criminology, UCV

requesting permission to conduct the study.

Respondents will be given ample time to respond to the

questions to avoid errors and inaccuracies in their answers

during the actual survey. The researchers will explain the

letter of intent to the respondents and show a waiver

regarding the confidentiality of their identity and the

information that they wish to disclose.

After retrieval of the questionnaires, the responses

will be objectively tallied, computed, recorded and

analyzed.

Statistical Tool

In analyzing the data that will be obtained via the

administration of survey questionnaire, the data on profile

of the respondents will be analyzed using frequency count

and percentage distribution.

On the other hand, the data that will be derived from

the coping mechanism of athletes in terms of in terms of

interpersonal, intrapersonal, academic stress and

environment stress will be analyzed using weighted mean.

Weighted mean will be further interpreted using the

Likerts scale below.

Furthermore, Statistical Package for Social Sciences,

Version 16.0 will be used to run the descriptive

statistics, independent samples t-test and regression

analysis.

Pearson will be used to correlate variables between

the perceptions of the respondents on coping mechanism of

athletes and their profile variables.
