1.2. The method involves magnetizing an areas to be examined and applying ferromagnetic
particles (the examinations medium) to the surface. The particles will form patterns on the
surface where discontinuities cause distortion the normal magnetic field.

1.3 The test shall be executed and evaluated by personnel who are qualified and certified in
accordance with PEC Ltds written practice and SNT-TC-IA.

1.4. Amendment of these procedures may be necessary from time to time to comply with
owners requirements & specification. These amended procedures will be submitted to
owners representative for approval.

3. Scope

3.1. The following notes describe the test procedure for magnetic particle inspection using an
AC or DC magnetic yoke in accordance with the recommendation of ASME Section V,
Article 7 (2010)

3.2. The test is to be conducted on ferritic steels. This test is primarily used for detection of
flaws that are open to the surface. It can also detect flaws that are sub-surface but its
sensitivity diminishes with depth.

4. Magnetizing Apparatus

4.1 An AC yoke type unit shall be used to produce a magnetic field strength sufficient to
reveal all relevant rejectable defects. The AC yoke shall have a lifting power not less than
4.5kg with a pole spacing of 150mm or less.

4.2 A DC yoke type shall have a lifting power of at least 40lb (18kg) with a pole spacing of
150mm or less.

5. Detecting Medium

5.1. Detecting medium used in this procedure shall be as follows:

Wet particles visible black magnetic ink shall be either:
a) Aerosol type Ardrox 800/3, flash point 150F (30C)
b) Aerosol type Magnaflux 7HF, flash point 194F (90C)

5.2 Dry magnetic particle (non-fluorescent) used shall be:

a) Ferromor ND7 red colour and/or
b) Econospect M28R5 red colour

6. Contrast Aid

White contrast paint used in conjunction with visible magnetic ink shall be of:
a) Aerosol type Ardrox 8901 and/or
b) Magnaflux WCP-2 which is rapid drying and non-flammable solvent

7. Wet Continuous Magnetic Technique

In this method, the magnetic particles are used in liquid suspension. This is suitable for detection
of extremely fine discontinuities extending to the surface as fatigue cracks. The temperature of the
surface examined shall not exceed 57C. The liquid medium used is generally premixed black
magnetic ink in aerosol can be supplied either by Brent (800/3) or Magna Flux (7HF) which meet
stringent requirements set by the specification.

8. Field Intensity Indicator

A Castrol field intensity indicator shall be used to indicate sufficient field intensity has been
achieved. Other indicators e.g. Magneto tester penetrameter may also be used. Sufficient field
intensity would be indicated by the detection of artificial defect in the indicators.

9. Magnetic Flux

The magnetic flux will be induced in the material by using the method of magnetization as
described below:

Magnetic Flow Method

The magnetic field is induced directly into the work piece by using an electro-magnet on the
material surface.

When magnetic flow is used, a demonstration will be performed to show that the amount of
magnetic flux induced is capable of detecting the minimum size defects.

10. Surface Condition

10.1. Surface of the ferro-magnetic to be tested & surrounding area of up to 50 mm shall be dry
and free from rust, oil, grease and or other foreign material that may hinder the movement
of iron powder or the interpretation of indications. When testing on weldment, the
adjacent surfaces must also be cleaned to the extent necessary for the flow detection.

10.2. Painted surfaces shall be tested only if the paint forms a thin coherent coating and
normally not thicker than 50 microns. Thicker coating will reduce sensitivity and
acceptance of this reduced sensitivity should be obtained from parties concerned prior to
testing.

11. Test Technique

The use of a yoke favors the detection of flaws where the major axis lies transverse to the line
joining the pole pieces of the yoke. As such, two magnetizing application, each being at right
angle to each other should be applied over the same area. When an indication is found, a third
application should be made at an axis where maximum indication is obtained.

12. Testing Procedure

12.1. After adequate cleaning has been done on the test surfaces, the contrast aid will be applied
in a uniform manner avoiding undue build-up.

12.2. The method to magnetize the material shall be carried out in accordance with the method
described in item 9.

12.3. Application of magnetic ink of approved concentration may be by spraying over the areas

to be inspected.

12.4. Inspection should then be repeated with the magnetic yoke at right angles to the original
direction in order to achieve full coverage. The examination will be done with appropriate
viewing conditions and sufficient time for formation of any indications.

12.5. Indications revealed may not necessarily represent true flaws. If doubts exist over
suspected indications, the surface will be cleaned, dressed if necessary and re-inspected.

13. Classification of Indication

13.1. Crack or crack-line flaws

Where cracks or crack-line flaws are revealed, their position, size and orientation shall be
reported.

13.2. Inclusion and rounded indications

These are circular or elliptical indications where the length is less than 3 times the width.

13.3. Linear indications

These are indications in which the length is equal to or more than 3 times the width.

13.4. Non-relevant indications

These are spurious indications caused by grinding and by changes in geometry or
boundary between materials of different magnetic properties.

14. Acceptance Criteria

The following acceptance standards shall apply unless other Standard, Code and or project
specifications are specified by Client.

14.1. Pressure vessel fabricated in accordance to the requirements of ASME Section Vlll
Division l and shall conform to Appendix 6.

14.2. Power piping fabricated in accordance to the requirements of ASME B31.1 and shall
conform to Chapter Vl para. 136.4.3.

14.3. Process Piping to the requirements of B31.3 and shall conform to Chapter Vll para.

removal. Whenever a defect is removed, the ground out area shall be blended into the
surrounding surfaces so as to avoid sharp notches, crevices and or corners when welding
is not required.

15.2. Where welding is required after removal of defect, the area shall be cleaned before
welding. Completed weld repairs shall be re-examined by the method originally used.

15.2.1. Imperfection believed non-relevant. Any indications of an imperfection which is

believed to be non-relevant shall be regarded as a defect unless on re-evaluation
with the same method of the use of other N.D.T. methods and/or by surface
conditioning it is shown that no unacceptable is continuity is present.

15.2.2. Re-examination of areas from which defects have been removed. After a defect is
thought to have been removed, and prior to welding, the area shall be re-examined
with the same method to ensure that the defect have been eliminated.

16. Post Cleaning

Post cleaning is necessary where magnetic particle materials could interfere with subsequent
processing or with service requirements.

16.1. Post cleaning techniques shall be as follows:

The drying of wet particles and subsequent removal by brushing or using of compressed
air.

16.2. Removal of wet particles by flushing with solvent.

17. Demagnetization

the surface, moving them around the area and slowly withdrawing the A.C. yoke while it
is still energized.

18.1 Reporting of the above testing shall be carried in accordance with standard PEC report
format.

19. Safety

Safety must be observed at all times and should not be restricted to the following:
