After marriage this is my second tour.

At that time I was not the member of India Mike. But I chalked out my itenenary based on advise
of my friends.
Now I feel I could have better itenenary if I get in touch with IM before my journey.

We have booked Howrah-Kalka mail sleeper class confirmed tickets 3 months back.
I must admit to get a ticket in shivalik delux narrow gauge train from kalka to Shimla is kind of
getting a dream comes true.It was a wonderful journey I ever had.
Though it was my second tour,I didn't booked any hotel or private car in advance.

29th Sept:We started our journey at 5.30 pm sharp. When we are in Howrah station it was 6 pm.
This is my first visit to see mountain so my hearbeat runs very fast.
Howrah-kalka leaves Howrah station on time 7.40 pm.
We took our dinner with Puri and Mutton curry with sweets and retired to upper berth and lower
berth.
33 Hours in sleeper class was really a tiring journey for us.When we passed Allahabad station it
was 2 hrs lates already.

However,we got the confirmation that Shivalik is the connecting train of kalka mail but we had a
fear to miss the toy train. But our utter surprise, train
reach kalka before time.It was 4.10am when we reach Kalka.

1st Oct:We boarded into shivalik delux after freshen up in kalka station. It was dark when
Shivalik leaves kalka at 5.30am.
When this red color toy train moves toward Shimla,we had full of delight which wont express in
words.
Seats in Shivalik deluxe in 2x2 arrangemnt. We saw the sunrise from toy train. It was excellent
while crossing tunnel one by one.

We were offered breakfast with Toast,Omlet,Jam,and Lemaon water and Tea.This is included in
ticket fare.
We stopped at Barog station which is 33 number tunnel. It has some historical importance. We
took some snaps at BAROG.
We reach Shimla station at 10.30am.

Once we get down at Shimla station one person followed to us.He offered a very good deal and
with little bergain we were decided to go with him.

His office near to the Shimla station.Once we reach to his office, he offerd us coffee and shown
us the hotel room in computer.I told him to give a hotel near to Shimla Kali temple.
Hotel Basera near to Kali temple and we deposit 5000/- in advance.

Total cost of (Hotel Basera)Shimla,Manali(Hotel Himgiri) and sightseeing for 6 days drop till
Kalka was ---9,500/-.Initially he quoted 12,000/- and after bargaining it settled down to
Rs.9,500/-.
After reaching to our hotel Basera,we get prepared for shimla mall after taking lunch in nearby
restaurant.

This was bright, sunny day surrounding green mountains its like a heaven. We were approaching
towards Shimla mall.
We took lot of snaps, lot of tourists roaming in Shimla mall with full of joy on their face.We took
Samosa from road side restaurant "Tripti Inn".
It was really delicious. We purchased some goods from Lakkar market.

In evening we visited to Shimla Kalibari which is must visit destination in Shimla.

Evening arti in kalibari was excellent. We reach our hotel after visiting Kalibari and retired to bed
after dinner.

2nd Oct:We woke up early in morning. We stepped out from hotel and found a dhaba nearby.
Soon after we completed our breakfast, we head towards next destination.our driver Tekchand
good in behaviour and soft spoken.
Next destination is Green Valley. This is on the way to kufri. This place offers mesmerizing beauty
of nature with full of greenery. We were standstill for sometime after viewing this god gifted
Green Valley.
We head towards Kufri our next destination.Once we reach Kufri, some ponnywallah approach to
us for Horse riding till Fagu top.
We took some snaps over there with their dress and ready to move towards Fagu.
Horse riding charge was 250/- up and down. When we head towards Fagu, path was full of mud.It
will be not be easy to move if some one wants to make it in foot.
Weather was good when we reach to Fagu top.We took veg.Magi after reaching to Fagu. From
there some persons was showing "Wall of China" through Telescope but we were reluctant to get
the telescopic view. There is a beautiful garden with lots of flowers and very scenic all over the
place.
After spending one hour at Fagu top we descend to Kufri by horse. It was around 1PM.

Next destination was "Advance Study".But as this day was Gandhi Birthday,it was closed. So, we
completed our sightseeing for the day and ask driver to leave us near to mall road. All of a
sudden, rain started rapidly. But the majestic beauty I captured in my camera. It was awesome. We
roamed here and there in Shimla mall and back to hotel at 7 pm.

3rdOct:
Today, we leave shimla and proceed to Manali via Manikaran. So, we woke up early in
morning. Our driver Tekchand will not come with us.Another driver named "Mahindar" is given
by our tour operator.Once we boarded to car,he asked Rs.2000/- for fuel and maintainence
charge. But I denied his proposal by saying it has been decided that I'll pay rest of money at the
last day of our tour. But Mahindar keep saying it would not be possible for him to pay the fuel
chage from his pocket. So we return back to the Tour Opeartor's office and after some negotiation
I had to pay Rs.2000/- for the time being and rest to be paid at the end of the tour.
So, we headed towards Manikaran via Kullu. The road was good throughout our journey from
Shimla to Kullu. But I must say our driver Mahindar is one of the best driver I ever met.He has
vast knowledge about this area and very friendly and he shared his experience while travelling
Kelong,Rekong peo,Sphiti etc.
Road from Kullu to Manikaran was not good. But scenic beauty was excellent. This is must visit
place if you love nature. We took breakfast in Dhami Restaurant.
Again we move towards Manikaran.Bias river following us throughout our trip.
Near to Buntar bridge there is a confluence of Bias and Parvati which we observed from our car
while passing the bridge. There is a hot spring water and a Gurudwara in Manikaran. As we reach
Manikaran at 5 Pm, we visit Gurudwara but didn't take food for time shortage. After spending
one hour we proceed to Manali and reach Manali at 9 Pm at "Hotel Himgiri" which already pre
booked from Shimla and retired to bed as we were very tired for whole day journey.
Following snaps taken while travelling from Shimla to Manali via Manikaran.

I woke up suddenly and found my mobile is ringing. It was 7am.Our driver waiting for us.He
insists us to get ready as early as possible.
We didn't understand the reason. We only do sigtseeing in Manali nothing else.
We freshen up soon and get ourselves ready for our next destination Hidimba Temple.
Hidima temple a ancient cave temple dedicated to Hidimba devi.
This is surrounded by Cedar forest at the foot of Himalaya.
Once we reach the temple after parking our car nearby, we were just spellbound with scenic
beauty.
One local lady came to us and give a rabbit to my wife and ask me to take a photo. After photo
session,I have paid her Rs.20/- and proceed to Hidimba temple. Some of them offering us
"Prasad" in the temple premises.
Prasad was so tasty, we took twice.
This place was great as far as the scenic beauty is concerned. This place also have historical
importance.
After visiting Hidimba temple, we were encountered by a huge traffic jam. This is the reason why
our driver called us early.
Next we visited "Club House" where tourist were enjoying various game near a river.
After spending some time there, we back to our hotel and spend leisurely the rest of the day.

Today, our destination is Rohtang Pass. I heard this place many times. As this was first week of
October, there was very little chance to get snow. We headed towards Rohtang very early in
morning at around 7 am.
On the way, we had to pay toll tax of Rs.50/- and proceeds further. Road was clean most of the
places.
It was thrilling experience when our car ascent towards the Rohtang top. View from the upper
road was majestic. It was clear sky and weather was perfect for travel.
We took breakfast from road side shop on the way to Rohtang Pass.Again we proceed to our
dream destination with a hope of getting snow. Now the road is in very bad shape and horrible
traffic jam till the end of Rohtang Top.
Our driver stopped our car near a shop from where they rent dresses like Jacket, boots, gloves etc.
But we refused to get all these dress as it was first week October and remote chance of having
snow.
Once we reach to the top, we were surrounded by ponnywallah. They insists us to take their pony
by saying that they would take us upto the snow point. But again we refused their proposal and
proceed further from Rohtang top.
Not sure what the name of this place while moving to ascend from Rohtang top.
As this is my first visit to mountain and still snow is not visible either side, we decided to go up
till we get snow.
As I was novice, I didn't take any precautions before ascend.
We found lot of tourists ascend from the Rohtang top very slowly. But I tried to move fast as a
result, after some time I got so tired and encountered by breathing problem and took rest on a
rock.
Also, I had tremendous headache and wont move further.
All of a sudden, I noticed my wife was far away from me and I was waiting for my wife to come.
By this time, I met another Bengali family who came from Delhi. They offered me some 'kismis'
and water, cotton wool after seeing my condition.
I used this cotton wool in my ear as there was thin air flowing heavily and suddenly temperature
fall down.
By this time my wife came to me and again we proceed 2 km steep ascent and suddenly we
found some snow cover mountain peaks. This is the first time when we see snow caped mountain
peaks. I was so engrossed, I just lost of the world which can't be narrated in few words.

Can anyone help me to identify the name of the mountain peaks(Shown in the snaps)?
Pardon me for my less knowledge in this area. On our way back we found lot of tourists asking
me whether they would get snow or not? I convinced him they will view snow in upper region.
After descended to our car parking area, we proceed to Vasisht Ashram where we viewed a hot
spring water.
On our way back, our driver shown us a small cottage and told us this cottage was used in "Koi
mil gaya" /"Krish" a popular hindi movie where "Rekha" lives.
Finally after taking our lunch we headed back to Manali.
Next day we headed towards Kalka which was long tiring journey again.
Just few km before our driver asked to change the car as Kalka is in Haryana state, so he has to
pay toll tax if he visit till Kalka.
He arranged a car for us and we paid the last installment to him and proceed to Kalka station to
board Kalka mail.

Veer,

Welcome to IM. I just posted a reply to Fragrance, which probably meets your criteria. If you
can, do go through that thread. Since you are planning on traveling with your spouse and kid,
you need to make sure that they get accustomed to the heights. I pressume they haven't traveled
to places where the average height is 2K meters above sea level. And almost all roads are
winding with snake curves. So traveling in and around Shimla needs to take these into
consideration.

Here's a tentative itinerary, which you need to keep flexible. I presume you have wherewithal of
traveling by a private vehicle.

Day 1 - Arrive at Shimla (you can either take a train till Kalka and the toy train from there till
Shimla, or opt for a bus from Delhi onwards). If you stay in and around Mall road, they see if
you can take the climb up to Jakku mandir. Spend the 1st day in Shimla and acclimatize yourself.
Go see the museum, check the ridge and other places. There's a tourist office on the Mall Rd that
can help you with the local sight seeing. The private cabs are just below the Mall Rd.
On Day 2, visit the nearby places. You can go to Narkanda, Kufri. Since the travel is through
winding roads, travel time will take up part of trip. I would also suggest visiting Chail. You can
split this into two days. In the evenings, spend time on the Mall, and go down to the lower
market to shop. Or better still, make your own destinations near the Mall.
How do you plan to move Kullu/Manali? If you plan on hiring a vehicle (which is cost
prohibitive), you can do it overnight (journey with a few breaks will take around 9-10 hours. You
can do it in a shorter time too.

Four days in Manali is ideal. Manali, unlike Shimla, is in a valley though also at heights closer to
2K above sea level. On the first day, walk through the Mall rd, take trips near Beas and walk to
Hadimba temple.
On the 2nd day, see if you can get to Rohtang (it still might not be open). If its now open, go visit
Solang, Vashist. Come back and enjoy walks in Manali.
Day 3, do some angling. Take a trip to Naggar and Kullu. If you want to do some shopping,
especially carpets, woollens, check the market in Kullu.
Day 4 - Check the nearby apple orchards and rabbit farms. Check the small villages that line the
beas river. Keep this day as a day that you do not decide on destinations but soak in the places.

Thanks aarosh,

Been to bit of heights. visited gangtok/ nathula last year. so sort of feel comfortable there.

What i meant by confusion was the option of travelling to kalka and onward to shimla or go to
delhi and onwards.

plus there are lots of places like dalhousie, kullu etc. since i did not want it to be too hectic.

wanted suggestions on places to stay. e.g 2 days simla, 4 days manali, 2 days a xyz.
also options like should i start with manali, go txyz and come to shimla and close by trip or start
from shimla

Veer,

Since you will be starting from Mumbai and the first leg of journey is through train, I would
suggest that you opt to reach Kalka and then take the toy train to Shimla. Spend 3 days in Shimla
and 3-4 days in Manali (depending on your timeframe). Another reason for starting from shimla
would be, that you start with the more hectic travel area first and then move to a lesser frenetic
area. Shimla will be crowded with both locals and tourist alike, while Manali will give you more
breathing space.
If your looking for places to stay in Shimla and Manali, I would suggest you first look at the
HPTDC resorts/hotels, then check the hotel's section in IM. I stayed at the Le Royale hotel in
Shimla, which overlooks the Mall Rd and is on the way to Jakku temple. Good rooms facing the
Mall, and good food at the restaurant. In Manali, if you want to stay on the Mall, opt for
Kunzum, else if you want to be a away from the center, try Rohtang Manalsu.
Kullu is just 5o odd kliks from Manali, so visiting it wont be an issue. Dalhousie is further away
and I would recommend you not to include in the present trip (since you have a kid with).

Veer,

we did a similar trip to Manali & shimal with our them 5 year old about 5 years back.
Below is our trip details which I had posted on the following Thread

Our trip was 12 days ex mumbai with two days in delhi with work.

Day 1 rajdhani to delhi

Day 2 Delhi
Day 3 Delhi departure by HPTDC volvo to manali
Day 4 manali -morning arrival speant the day just walking around manali and sleeping, evening
we spent at the garden on the banks of beas , play equipment for kids also as you go towards the
bank of the river you will find small time operators offering river crossing. Our son enjoyed this.
Day 5 Manali - rohtang pass we took the share jeep.
For you if you decide to take the share jeep book the middle seat. the usually configuration in the
jeep is driver + 2 in the front, 4 in the middle and then 4 in the back. It gets extremly
uncomfortable. also these guys are absolutely terrible and will scam you into sharing the seats
you have paid for so stay firm if they say "adjust kar lo" the best fun we had was the snow, snow
mobile trip, hot air balloon trip.
Day 6 Manali - walk to hidimba temple and manu mandir shopping etc
Day 7 Manali - shimla - hptdc deluxe bus.
Day 8 Shimla - walk around shimla to the viceroys lodge, mall etc.
Day 9 Shimla - we stayed back in the hotel due to strike and our son was unwell.
DAy 10 Shimla - half day sightseeeing to the various points and the zoo ( this one is near the
indra gandhi garden near the point from where you have to go by horse to see the vrious points).
this is very good and almost natural setting . was a different experiance from the usual
Departure to kalka by the shimla - kalka mail ( toy train) took 8 hrs and 107 tunnels and we
counted each one. the train gets very crowded and is a good experiance. night halt at kalka
Day 11 & 12 on the train from kalka to mumbai.

hope this is of help

Suggestions for travelling to Manali, Shoja, Sangla etc with kids

Please see the thread by Fragrance where I have linked this and other such threads for further
reference.

Regards
Mani

Mumbai to Shimla / Manali tour help advice wanted

Dear Friends;

We, as a couple, would like to travel from Mumbai to Manali AND/OR for around 5-6 days
during the month of April 2011. I have never goen to North India before and I am completely
blank about the situation there.

My basic concern is to enjoy the most of our time within budget limits. We dont intend to travel
too much. Just enjoying the surrounding and the atmosphere.

We just need to go to Manli and if buddget permits then to Shimla. And doing the sightseeing
there. Any good places to see?

How to go to Shimla / Manali via train from Mumbai... And are there any flights from Shimla to
Mumbai?

PLease help my friends with the itinerary, if you can...

Heloo Kmasood,

Please indicate your budget. Also please see my post above for a possible itenary. you will get a
lot of information from the links that I have provided above. You can also refer HPTC website
for details and hotel tarrif etc.

You can take Paschim express from Mumbai to Kalka and then the toy train from Kalka to
Shimla. you will get details of the trains and seat availability from www.indianrail.gov.in.

There are no direct flights from Shimla to Mumbai.

Please do a little research and then ask specific questions and we will be happy to help you.

Regards
Mani

HI VEER,

Even plan for Manikaran when in Manali.

my travel had been -
Mumbai- Delhi - Train (Rajdhani)
Evening Volvo Delh - Manali

next day Morning reached Manali. we stayed little away from Manali, on Nagar road. That
whole day we just moved around in Manali. mall road and other walkable places.
2rd day - local site seeing.
3th day - Rohatang pass.

4th day - if budget permits then drive to Shimla. on the you can visit MANINKARAN. you will
be reaching Shimla by night around 7pm. the drive through Darla ghat is little bad. but fun. better
if you leave around 6am , you can visit Vashudevi mandir , though i felt it is not necessary.

i had taken a Alto, nice car . the owner cum driver mr. Mohan , a good one with lot of enthu and
caring attitude. if you wish i can provide you his no. had asked him to drop me at Shimla.

in Shimla you need max max 2 days for sight seeing , but one can easily spend a week, at least i
did that.
visit Chail, Kufri.

good time you can spend on mall road.

In Shimla, try and explore it through walk as and if possible. for site seeing and visit better if you
hire a car.

while coming back to Delhi, try and visit Chandigadh. it had cost me Rs. 5000 from Shimla to
Delhi and a whole day. you can take a late night flight.

hope you enjoy... **************************************************

I would suggest the following plan -

D1 Arr Kalka, avail Toy Train to Shimla. Check-in to hotel. Evening - roam around the mall area.

D2 Shimla - day trip to Naldehra- Tattapani

D3 To Manali, check-in to hotel and rest

D4 Manali - Rohtang/Kothi/Solang tour

D5 Manali - local s/s and shopping

D6 Manali - day tour to Naggar, Kullu & Manikaran

D7 Manali to Chandigarh

D8 Chandigarh - Kalka and return journey.

Car hire : Shimla to Kalka for 7 days Rs.13000 aprx.

As I mentioned, the cab (Indica) to be hired after arriving Shimla, it would be at your disposal up
to Kalka rly stn. The estimated cost is given on that basis.

Shimla would be rainy in June end or early July. Outdoor activity of tourists might get affected
due to rain.

New Adarsh / Tourist Hotel in Manali, they might be slightly higher than your budget.
Chandigarh - Sun Star, Super palace, Sunshine.

In 1 day you can see The Ridge, Prospect Hill, Glen, Elysium Hill, Chadwick Falls etc in Shimla.
Shimla to Manali taxi @Rs.4K aprx.

Reach Manali to Chandigarh by road transport and Chandigarh to Delhi by train. That would be
cheaper and comfortable.
