The Megachurch Effect

Thesis Statement: Megachurches in America significantly influence not

only those who attend them, but secular cultures view of Christianity
as a whole.

I. Christians responses to megachurches have been both overwhelmingly positive

and negative.

A. Those who support megachurches see value in the large size and diversity
of community and resources.

1. Attractive facilities draw more attendees.

2. Bigger budget means more opportunity for outreach events.

(Forbes)

3. Large worship bands are more engaging.

4. They have the resources to connect with the younger generation.

B. Many Christians have a clouded view of megachurches because they see

them as a symbol for corruption and a watering-down of religion.

1. Megachurches put more focus on their image than on the

simplicity of the Word.

2. They are known for being more consumer-oriented.

a) Big media productions and things to keep congregation

engaged and entertained are common. (Thumma)
3. There are several national examples of pastors who have
manipulated the congregation for their own gain or have been hypocritical.

a) Ted Haggard was an example of this at New Life Church.

Transition: Regardless of what people think about megachurches, God gives guidelines
for what a church should like in the Bible.

II. The most important part of examining a church is comparing it with Biblical
standards.

A. The Bible gives guidelines for what the body of Christ should look like,
regardless of size or location.

1. First and foremost, the focus should be God. (Col. 1:17-20)

2. The members of the church should look to serve each other and
those outside of the church. (Rom 12:3-5)

3. Size and facilities are never mentioned in Scripture- God looks at

the heart.

B. People have gotten so caught up in the outward image of church that its
true purpose has been twisted.

1. Not only in Christian churches- the rise of atheist megachurches

implies that church can exist without God. (Barco)

2. Look for distinguishable differences between these atheist

churches and Christian ones.
