How to use the Wii MotionPlus (WMP) Nitendo sensors

instead of the piezo gyroscopes on any KKmulticontroller boards

By Jean-Louis Naudin Doc v1.3 - February 2011

This short tutorial explains you by pictures, how to connect the Wii MotionPlus (WMP) motion sensors
to any KKmulticontroller boards.

The genuine Nitendo WMP uses 2 gyroscopic MEMS sensors, a two axis gyroscope IDG 600
(InvenSense) and a one axis gyroscope QMEMS X3500W (Epson Toyocom). These sensors are more
improved and more sensitive than the common piezo gyroscopes from the HK401B AVCS (originaly
used on the KK board from Jakub). A WMP with its 3 MEMS sensors is cheaper than three HK401B
AVCs gyros.

I have bought a genuine Nitendo Wii Motion Plus (C9SF400) for about 27 $ USD.

To open the WMP box, I have used a drill because there two special screw.

Below, a photo which shows the connection outputs of the Roll/Pitch/Yaw sensors and the power
supply inputs.

The connections are very simple, you need only to enable the 3V regulator output by adding a wire
(see below):

Then, the I2C connector have been removed and its wire simply protected by a black adhesive tape.

Thats All You need only to connect the WMP (+5 and Gnd) to one of the BEC output of the ESC
directly on the KKmulticontroller board and the Roll/Pitch/Yaw outputs to the 25, 24, 23 inputs of
the ATMEGA 168-20PU

The working firmware can be downloaded here:

http://ardupilotdev.googlecode.com/files/XXcontroller_KR_v1_5b.zip
It is compiled and uploaded with AVR Studio 4.18 via the ISP port on the Atmel with the
mySmartUSB light programmer (compatible STK500 with Win 7)

The two circuits are placed in a plastic box, the WMP board is placed at the bottom and the KK board
is placed on the top, the two boards are insulated with a sheet of plastic.

The 2.4 Ghz Corona receiver is placed on the left side in the plastic box.

The KK-WMP flight controller is fixed on the main quad frame with a double side adhesive tape.
