Chapter 1: Marriage and Holy Orders

1. What were Gods first intentions for man?


He created everything for mankind, intending only that we would serve
and love God and offer all of creation back to him. God wanted us to
use his gifts according to his will in order to reach eternal destiny.
Follow his will and we will attain eternal happiness
2. Name the effects of Original Sin
a. Alienation from God,
b. Each other,
c. Ourselves, and all of Gods creation.
Deprives us of original holiness and justice God intended for us.
3. Explain respective roles God intends for man and woman
Created as perfect equals, marriage in plan so they can share in the
gift of life. Created in the image of God. Men and women are separate.
Man and women are complementary but bear Gods image in different
ways.
4. How do we share in the dignity and image of God in body and soul?
Body: intended to be temple of Holy Spirit. Body will rise on the last
day to be with God together. We should regard our bodies as good and
honor them
Soul: doesnt come from parents and makes us spiritual people in the
image of God
5. What ways can chastity help you to support marriage and family life?
Chastity helps us master our passions and control our sexual desires
and use them appropriately according to our state in life. Respect our
own sexuality and that of others. Understand sexuality isnt cheap or to
be ashamed of but is a precious gift to be treasured.
6. How is experience of Christian discipleship practiced?
Follow and learn from Jesus. Deepened through prayer, sacraments,
and practicing Christian virtues. Practice cardinal virtues: prudence,
justice, fortitude, and temperance. Theological virtues: faith, hope, and
charity.

1. What did St. Augustine say about mans inner desire for God?
Despite everything, man wants to praise him. God encourages man to
delight in your praise and he made us for himself and our heart is
restless until it rests in God. (We long for God)
2. Name/explain 3 ways man can discover God with natural reason.
Nature Gods creation. Beauty and power of what he created.
Passion Joint desire and love between people
Reflection Ourselves. Contemplating who and what we are

a. A faithful person coms to know Gods greatness and majesty: In
book of Job, Elihu was angry at Job for considering himself to be
right over God
b. A faithful person is thankful to God: our breath, food, health,
friendships, and talents are gifts from God

d. Recognizes all we have/are is a gift
e. Recognizes all things we gave are precious

1. Why is participation in the Church necessary for sharing in Gods life?
God intended the world to be in communion with his diving life. Church
is a gathering of all people in Christ. Salvation through Christ and the
Church as the way to restore holiness and bring us salvation.
Participate to share Gods life. Through church and sacraments,
we are forgiven
2. How do the sacraments help us to share in the divine life?
Sacraments renew the mystery of Gods love. They pour out the
blessings of the Father in his Son and through the Holy Spirit and
communicate the fruits of Christs Paschal Mystery
Forgiven, renews Gods love for us, offers us a spirit in divine life
as we wait for the Lord
3. What are ways that supreme happiness is described in the Old
Testament?
Coming of the Kingdom, entering into joy of Lord, vision of God and
entering into Gods rest. Happiness determined by God not the things
of the world
4. What do the Beatitudes teach us about happiness?
Teach us to be dependent on God alone for our happiness

1. What does mystery mean in reference to God?
Infinite incomprehensibility of God. God is unknowable and
unknown. Our knowledge of him is dependent on how much he
wishes to reveal
2. Name/explain 2 ways Gods revelation is entrusted to the Church
a. Apostolic (sacred) tradition Sharing of the message of Christ
through preaching, witness, institutions, worship, and inspired
writings
b. Sacred Scripture tradition and sacred scripture are bound
closely together. Both make up Sacred deposit of Faith.
Apostles entrusted it to the whole Church, while task of
interpreting Tradition and Sacred scripture is entrusted to
Churchs Magisterium (Churchs official teaching authority)
leaving, teaching office of the Church
3. How is the Holy Trinity a mystery in the strictest sense?
Impossible for humans to figure out or reason on our own.
4. Name 3 of the Churchs dogmas about the trinity.
The Trinity is one 1 God in 3 persons. Each of the Father, Son and
Holy Spirit is God whole and entire. Only 1 God.
The 3 Persons are distinct from one another Father is not the Son
nor the Son the Holy Spirit. The Father is in relation to the Son, Son
is begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit proceeds from the
Father and Son
The divine Persons are related to one another Father is wholly in
Son and in Holy Spirit, Son wholly in Father and Holy Spirit, Holy
Spirit wholly in Father and Son (Seeds, core, and peel of an apple)
