TurnItIn Instructions for BioInformatics Spring 2016

Your Plagiarism Essay is to be develop in MS WORD. Once complete, the WORD file MUST be
submitted through the TurnItIn web site at https://turnitin.com

ACCOUNTS
If you have used TurnItIn before, you simply Log In with your previous login & password.
You can use a previous account even if it was at a different school.
If you have NOT used TurnItIn before, click on Create Account and fill in the form to
establish your account.

ENROLL IN A CLASS
Once you have established your account and logged in, you must enroll in this class.

SUBMITTING YOUR ESSAY

Click on the class Bioinformatics Graduate
Click on the SUBMIT button beside the Term Paper assignment
Enter a title in the SUBMISSION TITLE box
Select one of the boxes below that to find your essay file probably the CHOOSE FROM
THIS COMPUTER button unless you have your file stored on Dropbox or Google Drive
Click the UPLOAD button
It will ask you to confirm then give you a receipt

VIEWING REPORTS ON TurnItIn

Once your paper has been submitted there are 2 reports you can view to improve your paper
before it is graded ORIGINALITY & GRADEMARK. To obtain the reports, click on the VIEW
button with your submitted file then click on the ORIGINALITY or GRADEMARK button on the
upper left. It may take a minute or so to load. At the bottom right a small pop-up window says
ETS DATA LOADING. You must wait for it to finish then the report will appear. (Note: We do
not use the PeerMark feature.)

Originality Report actually, Plagiarism Checking!

Upon first submission, the Originality Report is immediately generated. Upon subsequent
submissions, it will take 24 hours for the new report to be generated. It is VERY
IMPORTANT for you start a few days before the due date if you want to take advantage
of removing plagiarism from your paper before grading.
Some elements will be highlighted as plagiarism that really are not, like a famous persons
name or job title, or a company name. You can ignore these.
 Except for the above reason or one similar, all incidents of plagiarism should be re-
written in your own words. Otherwise, you will lose a significant number of points.
An Originality Report with 10% plagiarism or greater will incur point reductions unless I
confirm they are proper names, etc.
QUOTED MATERIAL IS NOT ALLOWED TO BE USED IN YOUR PAPERS, SO YOU ARE
NOT ALLOWED TO REMOVE PLAGIARISM BY PLACING IT IN QUOTES!!

GradeMark Reports grammar, spelling, mechanics, etc.

Unfortunately, Dr. Halverson MUST open each of your uploaded files and activate the
GradeMark feature. So, you MUST email her once you upload a file & I will activate the
checking feature ASAP. NOTE: Do not expect me to do this late evenings or very often

You should consider each GradeMark notation in your paper and make the corrections in
the original paper, then re-submit. (Dr. H will have to reactivate the GradeMarks on the
new file also so be sure to notify her of uploads.) The pop-up box will give you an
explanation of the error it is reporting. You will find these useful.

To obtain a high grade on the assignment, papers should be plagiarism free and without
grammar, spelling, punctuation & other writing errors.
