Tutorial-7: Kinetics of rigid bodies

1. The uniform 15-kg bar is supported on the horizontal surface at A by a small roller of
negligible mass. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between end B and the vertical surface
is 0.30, calculate the initial acceleration of end A as the bar is released from rest in the
piston shown in Fig.1.

Figure 1

2. The semicircular disk having a mass of 10 kg is rotating at = 4 rad/s at the instant =

600. Determine the normal and frictional forces it exerts on the ground at A at this instant.
Assume the disk does not slip as it rolls.

Figure 2
3. The 300-mm uniform rod BD of mass 3kg is connected as shown in Figure 3 to crank
AB and collar D of negligible mass, which can slide freely along a horizontal rod. Knowing
that crank AB rotates counterclockwise at the constant rate of 300 rpm, determine the
reaction at D where (i) = 0, (ii) = 180, (iii) = 270.

Figure 3
4. Two uniform disks A and B, each of mass 2 kg, are connected by a 2.5 kg rod CD as
shown in Fig. 4. A counter-clockwise couple M of moment 2.25 N-m is applied to disk A.
Knowing that the disks roll without sliding, determine (a) the acceleration of the center of
each disk, (b) the horizontal component of the force exerted on disk B by pin D.

(5) The two wheels shown in Figure 5 represent

two extreme conditions of distribution of mass.
For case A all of the mass m is assumed to be
concentrated in the centre of the hoop in the
axial bar of negligible diameter. For case B all
of the mass m is assumed to be concentrated in
the rim. Determine the angular acceleration of
each of the two wheels as they roll without
slipping down the incline. Also specify the
minimum coefficient of static friction s
required to prevent each wheel from slipping.

6. A drum of 100 mm radius is attached to a disk of 200 mm radius as shown in Fig. 6. The
disk and drum have a combined mass of 5 kg and a combined radius of gyration of 150
mm. A cord is attached to the drum at A and pulled with a constant force P of magnitude 25
N. Knowing that the disk rolls without sliding and that its initial angular velocity is 10 rad/s
clockwise, determine (a) the angular velocity of the disk after 5 s. (b) the corresponding
total impulse of the friction force exerted on the disk at B.

Figure 6
(7) The uniform 12-kg square panel (Figure 7)
is suspended from Point C by the two wires at A
and B. If the wire at B suddenly breaks,
calculate the tension T in the wire at A an
instant after the break occurs.
