EVS
It’s hard not to love the brilliant display of colourful foliage that
signals the entrance of autumn each year, but no one will remember
those leaves when they fall off. They will come to the end of their life.
Leaf carving art gives the fallen leaf another life and makes the leaf
show the amazing beauty of its veins, profile and structure in another
way.
Skeleton leaves are so beautiful, delicate and lacy. They are great for
many paper craft projects such as making greeting cards and
scrapbooks. They are also wonderful crafts for kids to work on. Here
is a faster and easier way to make beautiful skeleton leaves. You can
use any kind of leaf you like, but maple, peepal and oak leaves are
good for beginners. You may also dye the skeleton leaves for a
colorful effect. Delicate skeleton leaves make wonderful accents to
your favors. You can use them for gift wrapping, cards,
bookmarks, crafts and decoration. Let’s get started!
NOTE: The following activity should be done under adult supervision.

Instructions:
 Gather the leaves you want to skeletonize and place them in a
pot.
 Pour 3/4 cup of washing soda and 4 cups of water in the pot.
 Stir to combine the washing soda and water to make the
solution.
 Place the solution on a burner and bring it to a boil.
 Allow the pot to simmer until the leaves are softened.
Depending on the thickness of the leaves, this process may take
an hour or longer.
 Remove the leaves from the pot, rinse them in clean water and
place them on the paper towel. Wear your gloves and use a
brush to gently rub away the leaf pulp. Be careful not to tear
the actual skeleton.
 Soak the skeletonized leaves in fresh water, remove and let it
dry. Dye the leaves with food colouring and allow it to dry
completely.
 Continue to dye the leaves in various colours. If you want a
white skeleton leaf, you can soak the leaf in a solution of 50 ml
of bleach and 1 cup of water until it turns white. Then remove
it from the solution, rinse with water and let it dry completely.

Suggestion: Different leaves require different combination of soda and

water. You might have to experiment a few times to get the best result for
the leaves that you have. You can also try this with baking soda, but again,
you need to do your experiment and you know how to do it. Have fun! Any
one leaf skeleton craft should be submitted on the day school reopens.
