Title of Proposal: Design, Development and Response Analysis of a large scale orifice type
damper using high yield smart fluid for artillery gun recoil application.
Abstract:
The artillery guns had not only played decisive role of winning warbut also reduced the human
causalities. In spite of their advantages, these are havinglower rate of firing and not enough
precise firing at different angle of fire as passivesystem designed for particular load. These
challenges can be overcome bydiminishing the recoil stroke of barrel and applying constant
recoil force to barrelover the recoil stroke respectively. The stated amendments can be fulfilled
bysupplanting passive recoil system to semi-active recoil system. These semi-active systems
comprise smart damper and conventional spring. Smart dampers are damperswhich are having
controllable damping. These dampers are incorporated with smartmaterials which can change
properties magnificently in controlled fashion.By employing semi-active recoil system to
artillery gun, rate of firing can beimproved by reducing the recoil stroke of barrel without much
change in reactionforce transferred to gun structure and precise firing can be made by applying
constantrecoil force over the recoil stroke. The adaptive control of smart gun recoil system
forvarying gun firing forces provides a smooth operation by returning the recoil mass toits ready
to reload and fire position (battery position). In this project, the ER fluid yieldstress required for
gun recoil system to limit the stroke to 800mm has been calculatedand its performance testing
has been carried out.

Objectives:
1. To prepare& characterize high yield stress smart fluids (ER or MR fluids) suitable for
large scale gun recoil application.
2. To design, develop and test the large scale smart fluid damper suitable for 155 mm
Howitzer gun recoil system.
Methodology:
The proposed research work will be carried out in following phases,
1. Study in detail artillery gun recoil system, smart fluid dampers and high yield stress
smart fluids.
In this phase information related to above concepts will be collected through literature
survey and other online recourses. Detail study of entire system of artillery gun recoil, dampers
and smart fluids will be carried out.
2. Synthesis & characterization of high yield stress ( 100 KPa) smart (ER/MR) fluid
It is proposed to develop gun recoil system which generates very high recoil force (up to
300 KN). To bring this gun to a halt it is necessary to produce the same amount of counter recoil
force. To produce such high amount of force it is necessary to use a smart fluid with high yield
stress ( 100 KPa) in the damper. The yield stress of fluid is given as
1 E2
=( 138 R ) ( )
8

Where, R = radius of particle and 1 = dielectric constant of fluid. E = field applied.

From above equation it is clear that to increase yield stress of fluid it is necessary to reduce
particle size to nano meter and increase dielectric constant of fluid. The process to produce smart
fluid will be carried out by
Preparation of ER / MR particles to desired micro or nano size by using ball milling
machine and chemical process
Nano coating of these particles will be done to increase dielectric constant of the fluid by
using spray dryer.
Mixing of prepared particles with appropriate carrier fluid like silicon oil, transformer oil,
engine oil, etc. will be carried out by using ultra sonicator to get homogeneous solution.
Various fluids will be prepared and best suitable fluid for the damper will be selected.
Various fluids to be prepared are PANI/BaTiO 3, BaTiO3 coated with acrylamide, charcoal
based, zeolite based ER fluids and carbonyl iron based MR fluids.
Characterization of prepared fluid will be carried out by using modular compact
rheometer (MCR 52) to determine following properties
Yield stress of ER / MR fluid
Dynamic viscosity of fluid at varying electric field
Breakdown strength of ER fluid
Thermal stability
Sedimentation
Based on the properties obtained experimentally for different fluid samples, selection of
fluid will be carried out.

3. Performance testing of artillery gun recoil system

The artillery gun system (155 mm howtizer) kit will be used to check performance of gun recoil
system, in which damper with selected ER or MR fluid (as mentioned in step 2) will be used.

From the response analysis of proposed artillery gun recoil system various graphs will be
plotted like time versus displacement, recoil force versus displacement at different firing
angles.

This analysis is useful to determine firing order of the artillery gun (155 mm howtizer)

Expected outcome of proposal:

High yield strength up-to 100 KPa will be achieved for prepared Electro rheological(ER)
fluid.
Number of firing for artillery gun system of 155mm Howitzer gun will be increased due
to the reduction in recoiling time by using high yield strength fluid.
