PUB ISHER'S PREFACE

About the Book

"This is one of the first substantial abridged translations of the Talmud, pu blished in th e latter ha If fthe n inetee nth centu ry. Ba rclay, a sym path etic Christian, states in the P eface that he studied the Talmud with learned Rabbis during a ten-year's r sidence in the Holy land.

The task of translating the almud, which takes up more shelf space than the Britannica, would be aunting, and is probably beyond what one person is capable of in a lif time. So early solo translators such as Barclay had to prioritize. While Ro kinson translated the entirety of the Festivals and Jurisprudence section of the Talmud, including the commentary, Barclay took a more repre entative approach. He translated the Mishna (primary text) of seventeen tracts across the entire span of the Talmud, as well as a commentary on t e Tabernacle. This includes a number of tracts not in the Rodkinson tran lation, specifically, Blessings, Sabbatical Year, Daily Sacrifice, Measurem nts, Leprosy, and Hands. Others, particularly Fathers and Sanhedrin are Iso available in multiple translations at sacredtexts. The final feature 0 this book is a detailed plan of the Temple complex with extensive arc itectural notes.

Ba rclay does astra ightfor a rd tra nslation of each text, a nd keeps his personal opinions to a few footnotes. This is a meaningful and significant modern Talmud translation, and has been cited many times in other works, a Ithough seldom see n."

The Talmud

THE following se lection of tre tises, tra nslated fro m the Mish na, with explanations from the Ge ara and other sources, is designed to supply the reader with a g neral and impartial view of this important branch of Hebrew literature. hese treatises are chosen because they illustrate Bible teaching; and it is a empted to present them in a literal and reada ble form. Those a re omitted h ich are eithe r too ted ious or too gross for general circulation. It will be 0 served that these treatises contain the particular mode of thought again t which the deepest woes of the New Testament are denounced; while, at the same time, they afford much information concern ing the in ner I ife of the Jews at the period of ou r Saviour's sojourn upon earth. H nce the reason is apparent why the Talmud is either undervalued or overvalued, according to the reader's standpoint. Speaking generally, ho ever, it has proved injurious to those who have submitted to its author tv, and bowed to the dictum that "the Bible is like water-the Mishna is I ke wine-and the Gemara is like spiced wine."

To the treatises from the Talmu there is added a translation of the treatise on "The Tabernacle," from he Bereitha.

Where there are various reading in the original text, that rendering is given which seems most probable. A residence of several years in the East, of which ten were passed in the Holy Land, enabled me to gather the opin ions of some of the most lea rn d Ra bbis with rega rd to disputed points in the interpretation of the Talm d. The substance of these opinions is embodied in this volume.
