Subject: English Topic: Writing a Business Letter

Learner General Outcome 3


Outcomes -select information sources that will provide effective
support, convincing argument or unique perspectives
-expand and use a variety of tools and text features, such
as organizational patterns of texts, page layouts, font styles
and sizes, colour and voiceovers, to access information
- organize ideas and information by developing and
selecting appropriate categories and organizational
structures
- develop coherence by relating all key ideas to the overall
purpose of the oral, print or other media text
-use own words to summarize and record information in a
variety of forms; paraphrase and/or quote relevant facts
and opinions; reference sources
- choose specific vocabulary, and use conventions
accurately and effectively to enhance credibility

General Outcome 4
- revise to ensure effective introductions, consistent points
of view, effective transitions between ideas and appropriate

Instructional Students will be able to write and type a formal
Objectives business letter, using the standard block-style format
that is accepted by most businesses.
Students will be able to define and label parts of a
formal business letter.
Students will learn the skills needed in a business
letter for their PAT exams
Students will explore the appropriate language
associated with a formal letter.

Key Concepts -heading, inside address, salutation, body, closing,


signature, block style

Pre-Planning -create booklets (blank envelope and letter to fill in the

-print off booklets for students
-scan papers onto USB to show on smart board
-book computers
-manipulate power point that I found
-print off power point copy and write what I am going to
say/focus on

Materials -booklets

paragraphs and relate it to this project

Procedure Prep: Set up power point

Lesson Review What Went Well


&Comments -lesson went very well
(What did/did not -emphasizing certain aspects of the letter by making
work, students circle and highlight them
-using fill in the blanks- they got a lot of practice and it
improvements)
broke up the lesson so that it was not just me talking the
entire time
-giving students a lot of time and several revisions to
master and perfect their letters
What Could Be Improved
-teach students how to put in a header and footer so that I
know which paper belongs to who
