CVEEN 3210 Fall 2016 Homework # 3

Seismic Loads
Due date: September 22th

1. The following office building located in downtown SLC, UT. Obtain:

a. Base shear
b. Distributed seismic loads at each floor using ASCE 7-10 equivalent static
method.

h3 = 40 ft

h2 = 28 ft

h1 = 14 ft

20 ft 40 ft

Consider the following dead and live loads uniformly distributed at each floor.

Dead load for the two floors and the roof: = 4

Live load for the two floors and the roof: = 1.2

Assume the shear wave velocity at the site is = 2,300 /

HW 3-1
CVEEN 3210 Fall 2016 Homework # 3

2. Model the frame of Problem 1 in a structural analysis program assuming:

i) The base columns are fixed to the foundation.

ii) The base columns are pinned to the foundation

Assume the frame is a special (ductile) steel frame with the following sections:

Columns: W14x109

Beams: W24x104

Dont use the lateral forces you obtained in Problem 1. Instead, use the following
equivalent elastic lateral forces.

First floor: 50 kips

Second floor: 65 kips

Roof: 55 kips

Obtain the following information for pin and fixed building conditions:

a) The deflected shape due to the application of gravitational and seismic loads for the
following load combination.

1.2D + 1.0E + L

D = dead load, L = live load, and E = earthquake load

b) Plot the story drifts for each floor versus the height of the building (i.e., drift profile)

c) Discuss in a bullet form the differences in the response (e.g., deflections, interstory
drifts) between the pin and fixed buildings.

NOTE:

To compute the effective seismic weight, you should only consider the dead load. The
exception is for areas used for storage, where a minimum of 25% of the live load shall be
included (ASCE 12.7.2).
